The chemical industry produces wastewater with the widest variety of contaminants of any industrial sector — from highly toxic compounds like phenol, cyanide, and ammonia to complex mixtures of organic solvents, acids, and alkalis. Unlike food processing wastewater (which is biodegradable), or mining wastewater (which has a relatively predictable chemistry), chemical industry wastewater often contains compounds that are toxic to biological treatment organisms, recalcitrant to conventional treatment, and hazardous to human health if released untreated.
