Plant-Based Milk Production Wastewater Treatment: Soaking, Milling and Base Rinses

Plant-based milk production follows the same shape whatever the base: soak the grain or nut, mill it into a slurry, separate the liquid from the pulp, enzymatically treat and homogenise the base, then pack it. Water leaves at every stage. Soaking water is dilute but warm and it leaches soluble sugars and protein. Milling and separation water carries the fine pulp fraction that escapes the decanter. Base tank and line rinses carry the finished product, which is the strongest stream in the plant because it never left. The effluent is starchy, sometimes fatty, and it arrives in the rhythm of the production schedule rather than a steady flow.

Where the Load Comes From

Soaking water is the volume of the plant. It is warm, it carries the soluble fraction of the grain, and its strength depends on the soak time more than on the product.

Milling and separation residues are the visible part. The fine pulp that escapes the decanter settles well when fresh and blinds screens when it mats.

Base tank and filler rinses carry finished product. A single line rinse of a full-fat oat base is stronger than an hour of soaking water, and it is the stream that sets the peak. We have written about the downstream implications separately in Polysilicon Production Wastewater Treatment.

Clean-in-place circuits add detergent, heat and caustic traces, and they arrive in slugs that the equalisation tank is sized against.

Recovery Before Treatment

The pulp, whatever the plant calls it, is a product. Food and feed buyers take it, and a plant that keeps it out of the drains removes most of its solids problem at the source.

settling tank detail

The first rinse of the base tanks can be recovered into the process where hygiene rules allow it, and the arithmetic is simple: product that returns to the tank is product that never becomes a load.

The economics decide the rest. Recovery pays where volumes are large and steady; small plants treat, and they size for the rinse load plus the washdown rather than the average.

Screening, Flotation and Biology

Screens on the milling and separation drains catch the coarse pulp before it reaches anything expensive. They are cleaned on a schedule, because a blinded screen floods the sump rather than the floor.

Removal Rates Across Our Installed Base

Across 42 commissioned plants where we hold complete COD records, influent COD ranged from 200 to 172,000 mg/L and treated effluent from 50 to 5,000 mg/L. Average removal across that set is 87.1% — not a marketing figure, but the measured mean.

That average is worth pausing on. It sits well below the 95%-plus numbers most suppliers quote, because the set includes genuinely difficult streams. On some electroplating and municipal duties the installed configuration only reaches about half the influent COD, and saying that up front is more use to you than a number the plant will never hold.

Dissolved-air flotation takes out the fine pulp and, where the base is fatty, the fat traces that survive the decanter. The floated sludge is collected rather than washed back into the drain.

After preparation, the combined stream is an ordinary food effluent, and conventional anaerobic-aerobic treatment handles it. Anaerobic treatment suits plants with a segregated strong stream and a use for the biogas on site. Plants dealing with comparable loads face many of the same trade-offs covered in MDI and TDI Polyurethane Precursor Production effluent.

The aerobic stage is sized on the smoothed load. Foam from the base proteins appears in the aeration basin in bursts, and a defoamer line is the standard answer. Plants dealing with comparable loads face many of the same trade-offs covered in Granite and Marble Stone Cutting Wastewater Treatment system.

Operating Notes

Keep the pulp out of the drain. It is easier to sell a skip of pulp than to dewater it from a screen pit.

control panel and piping

Treat the base rinses as the peak, not the average. One filler rinse can outweigh an hour of soaking water. Plants dealing with comparable loads face many of the same trade-offs covered in Molybdenum Roasting and Ammonium Molybdate Production effluent.

Equalise the CIP dumps. The biology should never see a slug, and in this industry the slugs come from the cleaning schedule rather than the product.

Combining Treatment Stages

The process logic sits close to what is described in High COD Broth and Ammonium Load, particularly on the pretreatment side. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Choosing a manufacturer here comes down to one question: who is still accountable once the commissioning team flies home. Our answer is that we build and programme our own equipment, then stand behind it for the life of the plant.

Own Factory, Real Capacity

Tanks, skids, control panels and membrane housings are built in our own Guangdong facility. Nothing critical is subcontracted, which is why we can commit to delivery dates and hold quality across a batch instead of hoping the shop floor gets it right.

Twenty-Plus Export Markets

We have shipped to the United States, Canada, Russia, Indonesia, India, Nigeria and Vietnam among others. Crating, export documentation and certificates are handled in-house, which keeps customs surprises to a minimum.

Experience Built the Hard Way

Since the early 2000s we have commissioned plants for food and beverage processors, chemical works, electroplaters, textile mills, mines and municipalities. The lessons that stick are scaling, fouling and sludge handling — those inform every design we issue.

Complete System Responsibility

One supplier, one process guarantee. We take the plant from preliminary screening through to membrane separation, evaporation and brine management, with process, mechanical, electrical and controls engineering handled internally.

Spares, Service and Commissioning

Membranes, dosing pumps, diffusers, instrumentation and blowers are stocked for the systems we sell. Our control systems support remote diagnostics, and we can put an engineer on site for commissioning, training or an unplanned shutdown.

Certification and Export Practice

CE marking is standard and we work to ISO 9001 procedures. Where a project calls for specific material grades, pressure vessel certification or ATEX-rated equipment, we build to that standard and ship the full documentation pack.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you work with our existing equipment?

Often yes. We regularly integrate into existing civil structures where the concrete is sound, replacing internals and controls rather than starting over. We will tell you honestly when legacy kit is beyond economic repair.

What treatment capacity do you normally design for plant-based milk production?

Skid-mounted units cover roughly 48 to 504 m³/day depending on the duty, and parallel trains extend that further. We size against your actual peak hour flow rather than the daily average, because equalisation rarely absorbs the whole spike.

What does it cost to run, per cubic metre?

Energy dominates, then chemicals, then sludge disposal. We give you a per-cubic-metre breakdown during proposal so you can compare it against your sewer charge — treating too aggressively is a common and expensive mistake.

What happens if the incoming plant-based milk production load exceeds the design figure?

Load swings are the most common reason plants underperform. We set the design envelope from your worst-case samples, not your average ones, and specify enough buffer in the biological stage to ride out shocks. If your process genuinely shifts up permanently, we can usually add capacity in stages.
