Cashew Nut Processing Wastewater Treatment: CNSL Oil, Steaming Water and Shell Dust

Cashew processing starts with steam. Raw nuts are conditioned, shelled, dried, peeled, graded and packed, and the shelling step is what shapes the water. The shell holds cashew nut shell liquid, a phenolic oil that is caustic to skin and hostile to biology, and shelling water carries traces of it along with shell dust and fragments. Steam condensate from conditioning and drying is cleaner but arrives hot and in volume. The treatment logic that works keeps the CNSL-bearing water away from everything else, removes the dust mechanically, and treats the phenolic trace as a toxicity question rather than an organic-load question.

A Phenolic Stream, Not Just an Oily One

Cashew nut shell liquid contains anacardic acid and cardol, long-chain phenolics that are oily in behaviour and toxic in biology. Traces in the shelling water are enough to inhibit an unprotected aerobic stage, and the inhibition shows up as a slow loss of activity rather than an overnight crash.

Shell dust and fragments are the visible part of the load. They settle, they are abrasive, and they wear pumps that were chosen for clean water.

Steam condensate from the conditioning and drying steps is the volume of the plant: warm, dilute, and chemically mild. Its contribution is thermal and hydraulic rather than chemical.

treatment plant on site

Peeling and grading water adds fine kernel particles and some free oil from the broken nuts, and the packing floor adds detergent from washdown. Where several streams need joint treatment, wheat starch processing wastewater treatment is the more detailed reference.

Segregation at the Drain

Shelling and shell-washing water is collected on its own line. It is the only stream with a phenolic trace, and keeping it separate means the rest of the plant's water can be treated as an ordinary food effluent.

The segregated stream is dosed with lime or another coagulant at the drain, where the phenolics complex and the shell fines coagulate with them. The floc is removed before the water joins the general flow. If your site also runs this kind of duty, Gelatin Production Wastewater Treatment system covers the cost side of the decision in more depth.

settling tank detail

Plants that skip segregation treat everything at the head of the plant, and they pay for it with a larger chemical dose and a biological stage that never quite stabilises.

Solids and Heat

Shell fragments are removed with a rotary screen or a drum screen, and the fine dust is settled out in a grit channel or a cyclone. The wear on downstream equipment decides whether this step is cheap or expensive in hindsight.

Steam condensate is cooled at a mix point before the equalisation tank. The volume is large enough that the cooling duty is real, and it is designed rather than discovered.

The equalisation tank absorbs the batch rhythm of conditioning and shelling. Cashew plants run campaigns, and the water follows the campaign rather than the clock.

process equipment overview

Once the phenolic stream has been chemically treated and the dust removed, the remaining load is starch, kernel fines and mild detergent, and conventional anaerobic-aerobic treatment handles it.

What This Looks Like in Practice

For comparison, our 2021 project in Wenshui, Shanxi ran at 6 m³/day with influent COD near 172,000 mg/L and treated water around 5,000 mg/L. That is 97.1% removal in practice, not on paper. The train was hydrolysis acidification + DAF + oil separation + ultrafiltration.

Figures are site-measured values from commissioned plants, not modelled estimates.

The biomass is watched closely in the first months, because the residual phenolic trace is small and invisible in the daily results. A slow decline in activity is the signature, and the answer is a check on the coagulation dose at the drain.

Where the plant runs an anaerobic stage on a segregated strong stream, the biogas is a real credit, because the drying steps need heat all day.

Operating Notes

Treat CNSL as a toxicity problem first and an oil problem second. Biology recovers from oil load faster than from phenolic load. The same selection criteria reappear in vanadium flow battery manufacturing wastewater treatment, which is worth opening alongside this one.

Screen the shells at the drain. Shell dust is abrasive, and the arithmetic on pump wear settles the argument.

Cool the condensate deliberately. Warm water into a biological stage is a slow, expensive way to learn about heat. The process logic sits close to what is described in Pectin Production effluent, particularly on the pretreatment side.

Combining Treatment Stages

If your site also runs this kind of duty, Degumming, Bleach Clay and Free Oil covers the cost side of the decision in more depth. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Two decades in this industry teaches you that most treatment problems are procurement problems in disguise. Someone bought the cheapest skid, nobody checked the equalisation volume, and eighteen months on the plant cannot hold its consent limit. We build differently.

In-House Fabrication

Our Guangdong works produces everything from standard modular units to fully bespoke lines. Building in-house keeps cost, schedule and quality under our own control rather than a subcontractor's goodwill.

Experience Built the Hard Way

Since the early 2000s we have commissioned plants for food and beverage processors, chemical works, electroplaters, textile mills, mines and municipalities. The lessons that stick are scaling, fouling and sludge handling — those inform every design we issue.

Twenty-Plus Export Markets

We have shipped to the United States, Canada, Russia, Indonesia, India, Nigeria and Vietnam among others. Crating, export documentation and certificates are handled in-house, which keeps customs surprises to a minimum.

Documentation You Can Actually Audit

Each system ships with as-built drawings, material certificates, welding records and a functional specification. If a client's own consultant wants to review the process calculation basis, we hand it over rather than treating it as proprietary.

Certification and Export Practice

CE marking is standard and we work to ISO 9001 procedures. Where a project calls for specific material grades, pressure vessel certification or ATEX-rated equipment, we build to that standard and ship the full documentation pack.

Complete System Responsibility

One supplier, one process guarantee. We take the plant from preliminary screening through to membrane separation, evaporation and brine management, with process, mechanical, electrical and controls engineering handled internally.

After the Handover

Spares for everything we install are held in stock. Remote telemetry is available on most systems, and our service engineers commission, train your operators and turn out for emergencies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the plant be modified later if our production changes?

Yes, if you tell us about likely expansion up front. Leaving room in the civil works and oversizing the equalisation tank costs far less than retrofitting later. Cashew Nut Processing Wastewater Treatment rarely fails because of bad chemistry — it usually fails because nobody planned for the second production line.

What happens if the incoming cashew processing load exceeds the design figure?

Load swings are the most common reason plants underperform. We set the design envelope from your worst-case samples, not your average ones, and specify enough buffer in the biological stage to ride out shocks. If your process genuinely shifts up permanently, we can usually add capacity in stages.

What spare parts should we hold on site?

Critical spares are pumps, dosing valves, instrumentation sensors and any specialty media. We ship a recommended spares kit with the plant and hold stock for everything we supply, so lead times on replacements stay short.

Can you work with our existing equipment?

Often yes. We regularly integrate into existing civil structures where the concrete is sound, replacing internals and controls rather than starting over. We will tell you honestly when legacy kit is beyond economic repair.

What treatment capacity do you normally design for cashew processing?

Skid-mounted units cover roughly 34 to 825 m³/day depending on the duty, and parallel trains extend that further. We size against your actual peak hour flow rather than the daily average, because equalisation rarely absorbs the whole spike.
