Lactic Acid Fermentation Wastewater Treatment: Calcium Sulfate, Sulfate and High COD

Lactic acid is fermented from sugars, neutralised with calcium carbonate, and recovered by crystallization, and the water that leaves carries the marks of every one of those steps. The broth residue brings a high organic load, mostly residual sugar and lactate. The neutralisation step produces calcium sulfate, which appears as gypsum in the water and in the sludge. The sulfate that comes with it is the quiet constraint, because high sulfate in an anaerobic reactor feeds the sulfate-reducing bacteria and they compete with the methane producers for the same carbon. The stream is strong, warm and biodegradable, and the design that works accounts for the sulfate before it sizes the reactor.

What the Stream Carries

The broth residue carries residual sugars and lactate at high concentration. It is the strongest stream in the plant, and it is entirely biodegradable, which is the useful part of the picture.

The neutralisation step adds calcium sulfate. Part of it leaves as product gypsum from the crystal recovery; the rest rides along in the wash water as fine suspended solids.

Sulfate is the constraint that hides in the results. It is not toxic in the ordinary sense, but in an anaerobic reactor it changes the biology, and the change is measured in methane yield rather than in crash frequency.

Wash water from the crystallization and recovery circuits dilutes everything, and its volume is what the equalisation tank is sized against.

Gypsum and Solids

Fine gypsum settles when the water is calm, and it is removed ahead of the biological stage with a settling tank or a hydrocyclone. The recovered gypsum has a market in some regions, which turns a sludge line into a small credit.

The operational trap is scale. Where the water is warm and the calcium and sulfate are both high, scale forms in pipes and pumps before it settles in the tank, and the maintenance schedule is written accordingly.

Screens on the broth and wash drains catch the coarser solids. They are a small cost that protects everything downstream.

Sulfate and the Anaerobic Question

Anaerobic treatment is the natural first choice for the dissolved load, and it works, but the sulfate changes the arithmetic. Sulfate-reducing bacteria take a share of the carbon and produce sulfide instead of methane.

The design answers it in three ways. A two-stage reactor lets the sulfate reducers and the methane producers work in separate zones. A small post-treatment step strips the sulfide from the biogas. Or the plant accepts a lower methane yield and sizes the gas handling for it.

Where the sulfate is moderate, a single-stage reactor runs for years with a biogas that needs its sulfide watched. Where the sulfate is high, the aerobic route is often the honest answer, at the cost of a larger power bill.

Aerobic and Polishing

The aerobic stage after anaerobic treatment, or as the main route, handles the residual carbon comfortably. The design check is the nutrient balance, because a sugar-based broth is carbon-rich and nitrogen-poor.

Nitrification is rarely the driver in this industry. Where the plant discharges near a sensitive receiver, a modest anoxic zone keeps the ammonia inside consent.

What Our Project Data Actually Shows

Across 42 commissioned plants where we hold complete COD records, influent COD ranged from 200 to 172,000 mg/L and treated effluent from 50 to 5,000 mg/L. Average removal across that set is 87.1% — not a marketing figure, but the measured mean.

That average is worth pausing on. It sits well below the 95%-plus numbers most suppliers quote, because the set includes genuinely difficult streams. On some electroplating and municipal duties the installed configuration only reaches about half the influent COD, and saying that up front is more use to you than a number the plant will never hold.

Polishing, where a sensitive receiver applies, is a sand or membrane step, and its fouling rate is a good early indicator of how well the upstream gypsum removal is running.

Measure the sulfate before sizing the reactor. It decides between a single-stage, a two-stage and an aerobic plant, and the three are not interchangeable. We have written about the downstream implications separately in Borax and Boron Mining effluent.

Remove the gypsum early. Scale in a pipe is a maintenance cost nobody budgets, and it is avoided with a settling tank. A related discussion worth reading here is Olive Mill Wastewater Treatment.

Watch the biogas for sulfide. The sulfate reducers work quietly, and the first sign is a smell at the gas handling rather than a number at the outfall. A related discussion worth reading here is Potato Processing Wastewater Treatment system.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Two decades in this industry teaches you that most treatment problems are procurement problems in disguise. Someone bought the cheapest skid, nobody checked the equalisation volume, and eighteen months on the plant cannot hold its consent limit. We build differently.

Manufacturing Base in Guangdong

Owned production lines mean we control tolerances, materials and delivery. Standard modular units and bespoke skids are both built by our own people, so schedule commitments are ours to keep.

Two Decades of Field Data

Food and beverage, chemicals, electroplating, textile dyeing, mining, municipal work — we have commissioned across all of them. The useful part is not the project count, it is having seen how plants fail in year seven and designing those failures out.

Complete Units and Turnkey Plants

Whether you need a single package unit or a turnkey installation with civil works, we deliver the entire treatment scheme. Our engineering team covers process, mechanical, electrical and automation so one party owns the outcome.

Documentation You Can Actually Audit

Each system ships with as-built drawings, material certificates, welding records and a functional specification. If a client's own consultant wants to review the process calculation basis, we hand it over rather than treating it as proprietary.

Twenty-Plus Export Markets

We have shipped to the United States, Canada, Russia, Indonesia, India, Nigeria and Vietnam among others. Crating, export documentation and certificates are handled in-house, which keeps customs surprises to a minimum.

Spare Parts and After-Sales Support

We carry membranes, pumps, blowers, diffusers and instruments for every system we supply. Remote support through the PLC is standard on most builds, and on-site service covers commissioning, training and urgent callouts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What spare parts should we hold on site?

Critical spares are pumps, dosing valves, instrumentation sensors and any specialty media. We ship a recommended spares kit with the plant and hold stock for everything we supply, so lead times on replacements stay short.

What treatment capacity do you normally design for lactic acid fermentation?

Skid-mounted units cover roughly 29 to 654 m³/day depending on the duty, and parallel trains extend that further. We size against your actual peak hour flow rather than the daily average, because equalisation rarely absorbs the whole spike.

Do you export and support overseas installations?

We have shipped to the USA, Canada, Indonesia, India, Russia, Vietnam and Nigeria among others. Documentation, crating and export paperwork are handled in-house, and we support commissioning either remotely or with engineers on site.
