Fish Processing Effluent: Blood, Viscera and a BOD That Goes Rancid in Hours

A fish plant bleeds, guts and washes the catch, then chills, cooks or fillets it. Every one of those steps sheds water, and the water is some of the most putrescible stuff in the food trade. Blood and viscera carry protein and fat that go rancid fast; brines add salt that biology hates; cook water carries the soluble load from the meat itself. The plants that do well treat this stream as urgent, because it is. A holding tank that sits warm for a shift does not just smell — it becomes a treatment problem twice as hard by the next morning.

Where the Load Comes From

Bleeding and gutting release the first and worst fraction: blood, digestive contents and fine tissue. The BOD here is brutal and it is the part that, left alone, turns the whole effluent septic within hours.

Washing and filleting add a steady stream of soluble protein and a lot of suspended solids — skin, scales, bits of flesh. Clean enough to look harmless, rich enough to rot.

Brine from the chill and cure tanks is low in BOD but high in chloride. Get too much of it into the biology and you start inhibiting the very microbes you are relying on.

Cook and blanch water is the quiet one. It looks clean but it holds the soluble organics leached out of the fish during heating, and it arrives hot, which is another shock the biomass does not appreciate.

Blood and Viscera Set the Number

If you measure one thing on a fish line, measure the blood-water. It is a small volume with a disproportionate share of the BOD, and capturing it separately changes the economics of the whole plant.

settling tank detail

We have seen sites screen the offal out and still lose because the blood ran to the floor drain with the wash. The drain layout matters more than the treatment box here.

The fat fraction is its own headache. It floats, it coats surfaces, and if it reaches a biological stage it smothers the biomass. Skimming it early is cheaper than unclogging a diffuser later.

Viscera also means odour risk, not just load. A plant that lets gutting waste sit is the plant the neighbours complain about, and complaints turn into consent conditions you did not budget for. Much of this mirrors the situation set out in Corn Starch Production Wastewater Treatment.

Screen, Float, Then Treat

Coarse and fine screening keeps the big solids out of everything downstream. Obvious, but the plants that skip it spend their maintenance budget on pump blockages instead.

Dissolved-air flotation pulls the fat, blood colloids and fine tissue out of the water before biology sees them. On a fish duty it is not optional — it is the difference between a stable reactor and a sour one.

Removal Rates Across Our Installed Base

Across 42 commissioned plants where we hold complete COD records, influent COD ranged from 200 to 172,000 mg/L and treated effluent from 50 to 5,000 mg/L. Average removal across that set is 87.1% — not a marketing figure, but the measured mean.

That average is worth pausing on. It sits well below the 95%-plus numbers most suppliers quote, because the set includes genuinely difficult streams. On some electroplating and municipal duties the installed configuration only reaches about half the influent COD, and saying that up front is more use to you than a number the plant will never hold.

After flotation the stream is still strong but far more manageable. Aerobic treatment handles the residual BOD; anaerobic is worth considering where the load is high and you want the biogas. The same selection criteria reappear in Edible Oil Refinery Wastewater Treatment system, which is worth opening alongside this one.

The brine question decides your flow sheet. Dilute it enough with the rest of the stream and the biology copes; concentrate it and you need either a tolerant process or a separate handling route. We have written about the downstream implications separately in Grain Distillery Spent Wash Treatment.

The Smell Is the Real Constraint

On a fish plant the discharge limit is rarely the binding constraint. The odour is. A treatment system that meets COD but smells gets shut down faster than one that is slightly over on BOD.

control panel and piping

Covered equalisation with the gas drawn off beats an open tank every time. The capital is higher; the neighbour relations are not.

Move the high-load fractions the same day. Blood-water that enters a covered, mixed, cooled tank in the morning is a treatable stream by afternoon, not a crisis.

We tell operators to think of the water as perishable, because it is. Treat it like you would the product on the belt, and most of the surprises disappear.

Combining Treatment Stages

Plants dealing with comparable loads face many of the same trade-offs covered in Tannery and Leather effluent. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Picking a supplier for this kind of plant is mostly about who carries the risk when something goes wrong. We have built this equipment for more than twenty years, and we are the ones who fabricated it, programmed the controls and will still answer the phone three years from now.

Manufacturing Base in Guangdong

Owned production lines mean we control tolerances, materials and delivery. Standard modular units and bespoke skids are both built by our own people, so schedule commitments are ours to keep.

Twenty-Plus Export Markets

We have shipped to the United States, Canada, Russia, Indonesia, India, Nigeria and Vietnam among others. Crating, export documentation and certificates are handled in-house, which keeps customs surprises to a minimum.

Two Decades of Field Data

Food and beverage, chemicals, electroplating, textile dyeing, mining, municipal work — we have commissioned across all of them. The useful part is not the project count, it is having seen how plants fail in year seven and designing those failures out.

We Engineer the Whole Train

Screening, equalisation, biological or chemical treatment, membranes, evaporation, brine handling — the complete line comes from one organisation. Process design, mechanical, electrical and PLC programming sit under the same roof, so there is no gap for finger-pointing at handover.

Spare Parts and After-Sales Support

We carry membranes, pumps, blowers, diffusers and instruments for every system we supply. Remote support through the PLC is standard on most builds, and on-site service covers commissioning, training and urgent callouts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which discharge standard will the treated water meet?

We design against whatever consent applies at your boundary — GB 8978, local sewer limits, or a ZLD target with no liquid discharge at all. The design basis is agreed in writing before fabrication, so there is no argument later about what "compliant" meant.

How do you handle sludge from this process?

Sludge handling is where most budgets quietly blow out. We size dewatering against realistic solids production, and we usually recommend a filter press for this duty. The disposal route — landfill, incineration, or a licensed contractor — should be confirmed before commissioning.

Can you work with our existing equipment?

Often yes. We regularly integrate into existing civil structures where the concrete is sound, replacing internals and controls rather than starting over. We will tell you honestly when legacy kit is beyond economic repair.

What spare parts should we hold on site?

Critical spares are pumps, dosing valves, instrumentation sensors and any specialty media. We ship a recommended spares kit with the plant and hold stock for everything we supply, so lead times on replacements stay short.

What information do you need to quote?

Water analysis for your worst-case stream, peak and average flows, discharge limits, available footprint and utilities. If you do not have a full analysis yet, we can start from a partial one and flag the gaps.

How long does a fish processing system take to deliver?

Standard units ship in about 8 to 10 weeks. Custom trains with blood and viscera set the number included run longer — plan for 16 to 24 weeks once detailed engineering starts. Site installation and wet commissioning add another few weeks.
