Grain Distillery Spent Wash Treatment: Fermentation Stillage, the Thin and Thick Fractions and the High-COD Load
A grain ethanol distillery cooks starch or sugar feed, ferments it to beer, distils off the alcohol and is left with the stillage — everything that did not vaporise. That stillage is the most concentrated wastewater most plants will ever see. Thin stillage comes off the centrifuge after the solids are pulled, and thick stillage or concentrated vinasse is the evaporator bottoms when the site recovers a syrup. The stream is acidic, hot, very dark and carries more COD per litre than almost any other food process. It is treated anaerobically almost everywhere, because that is the only route that turns the load into something useful.
Where the Water Comes From
Stillage is the whole non-volatile fraction of the beer after distillation. Everything the fermentation made except the ethanol stays in this stream, and it is the load that defines the plant.
Thin stillage is what remains after the coarse solids are centrifuged out. It is still extremely concentrated, but it flows, and it is the stream most plants send to anaerobic treatment.
Thick stillage, or concentrated vinasse when the site evaporates it, is the bottoms of the evaporator. It is a syrup, not a liquor, and only the largest plants handle it separately.

Condensate from the evaporator and the distillation column is the clean end. It is often reused in the process rather than sent to treatment, which shrinks the problem considerably.
Thin and Thick Stillage
Thin stillage is acidic and hot. It arrives from the still at process temperature with a pH well below neutral and a COD that runs into the tens of thousands of mg/L.
It is also highly putrescible. Left in a tank it sours fast, so it is moved straight to the digester rather than held — a septic feed is harder to treat than a fresh one.

Thick stillage is the same load in a smaller volume. Where the plant recovers a syrup for animal feed, the evaporator concentrates the problem and the digester sees less of it.
Centrifuging first is standard. Removing the coarse solids protects the digester from grit and gives a cake that has a feed value, which offsets part of the cost.
The Anaerobic Core
This stream is treated anaerobically almost by definition. The COD is too high for aerobic biology to touch on its own, and anaerobic digestion returns biogas from a stream that would otherwise just cost money. Plants dealing with comparable loads face many of the same trade-offs covered in Whey Protein Isolate Production Wastewater Treatment.
A well-run digester takes the bulk of the load and drops the COD by a wide margin. The biogas is mostly methane and it displaces purchased fuel on site.

Temperature is the lever. Mesophilic digestion runs steadily once the feed is warm, and the stillage arrives warm enough that heating is a small addition rather than a large one.
Mixing and pH control keep the digester stable. Stillage varies with the feedstock, and a steady alkalinity buffer is what stops a souring event from cascading.
The digester effluent is still loaded. It is sent to an aerobic polish that brings the residual down to consent, and that stage is compact because the anaerobic step did the heavy lifting.

Nutrients are rarely a problem. Stillage brings its own nitrogen and phosphorus, so the polishing stage is rarely dosed. Where several streams need joint treatment, Infant Formula Production Wastewater Treatment is the more detailed reference.
What This Looks Like in Practice
One reference point: a 5 m³/day installation we delivered in Taishan, Guangdong (2021) was treating feed at roughly 1,000 mg/L COD and holding discharge near 50 mg/L, about 95% removal.
| Location | Year | Flow | Feed COD | Treated COD | Removal |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Taishan, Guangdong | 2021 | 5 m³/d | 1,000 mg/L | 50 mg/L | 95% |
Figures are site-measured values from commissioned plants, not modelled estimates.
Reuse closes the loop. Evaporator condensate and digester supernatant are returned to the process where the water balance allows, which cuts the fresh demand.
The biogas is the prize. A plant that flares it is wasting the one part of this duty that pays, and most sites pipe it to a boiler or a generator.

Operating Notes
Treat it anaerobically. The COD is too high for anything else, and the digester turns the load into biogas instead of cost.
Keep the feed moving. Stillage goes septic in hours, and a septic feed is a different problem from a fresh one.
Hold the alkalinity buffer. Stillage varies with the grain, and a steady buffer is what stops a souring event from spreading.
Integrated Treatment Strategies
Plants dealing with comparable loads face many of the same trade-offs covered in Chewing Gum Manufacturing Wastewater Treatment. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.
Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer
Choosing a manufacturer here comes down to one question: who is still accountable once the commissioning team flies home. Our answer is that we build and programme our own equipment, then stand behind it for the life of the plant.
In-House Fabrication
Our Guangdong works produces everything from standard modular units to fully bespoke lines. Building in-house keeps cost, schedule and quality under our own control rather than a subcontractor's goodwill.
Two Decades of Field Data
Food and beverage, chemicals, electroplating, textile dyeing, mining, municipal work — we have commissioned across all of them. The useful part is not the project count, it is having seen how plants fail in year seven and designing those failures out.
Complete Units and Turnkey Plants
Whether you need a single package unit or a turnkey installation with civil works, we deliver the entire treatment scheme. Our engineering team covers process, mechanical, electrical and automation so one party owns the outcome.
Documentation You Can Actually Audit
Each system ships with as-built drawings, material certificates, welding records and a functional specification. If a client's own consultant wants to review the process calculation basis, we hand it over rather than treating it as proprietary.
After the Handover
Spares for everything we install are held in stock. Remote telemetry is available on most systems, and our service engineers commission, train your operators and turn out for emergencies.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you handle installation and operator training?
Every unit we supply is commissioned by our own engineers. Training happens on site with your actual operators, and the O&M manual covers routine work plus troubleshooting. Remote diagnostics through the control system are included for the first year.
Do you export and support overseas installations?
We have shipped to the USA, Canada, Indonesia, India, Russia, Vietnam and Nigeria among others. Documentation, crating and export paperwork are handled in-house, and we support commissioning either remotely or with engineers on site.
What treatment capacity do you normally design for grain distillery spent wash treatment?
Skid-mounted units cover roughly 43 to 988 m³/day depending on the duty, and parallel trains extend that further. We size against your actual peak hour flow rather than the daily average, because equalisation rarely absorbs the whole spike.
Is grain distillery spent treatment suitable for water reuse?
Usually yes, once the thin and thick stillage stage is stable. Reuse normally means adding membrane polishing to bring conductivity and COD down to your process water specification. We would need to see your reuse water limits to size it properly.
