Edible Oil Refinery Wastewater Treatment: Caustic Refining, Soapstock and the Emulsified Fat

An edible oil refinery takes crude vegetable oil and runs it through degumming, alkali refining, bleaching and deodorising to make a stable, flavourless product. The water it leaves is an oily, pH-swinging stream that carries the fat the process was trying to pull out of the oil. Caustic refining makes soapstock and a strongly alkaline wash. Bleaching and filter washes add the fine solids. Deodoriser condensate carries free fatty acids and tocopherols. The effluent is hot, variable in pH and loaded with emulsified fat that has to be intercepted before the biology is asked to do anything.

Where the Water Comes From

Alkali refining wash is the strongest fraction. Crude oil is neutralised with caustic, the soapstock separates, and the wash water that follows carries the residual alkali, soaps and the fat that did not separate.

Degumming and water washing add the lighter oily water. Phospholipids and trace oil come off here, and the stream is less caustic but still emulsified.

Bleaching and filter washes carry the spent clay and the fine solids. They are dilute but gritty, and they wear pumps and blind screens if they are not settled first.

Deodoriser condensate is the clean-but-loaded end. It carries free fatty acids, tocopherols and odour compounds stripped from the hot oil, and it is the stream most plants recover rather than discharge.

treatment plant on site

Refining wash is strongly alkaline. The pH has to come down before anything biological is attempted, and most plants do that by blending rather than by dosing acid.

Soapstock is recoverable. The soap fraction is settled or acidulated back to fatty acid, and either route removes a large share of the load at the source.

Emulsified fat is the real problem. It does not settle on its own, and it coats everything downstream, from diffusers to membranes, if it is not broken first.

A grease trap or dissolved-air flotation unit on the refining streams breaks the emulsion and floats the fat. The recovered fat goes back to the process or to the acidulation step.

Oil Recovery First

Intercept the fat at the drain. A skimmed DAF removes most of the emulsified oil, and the recovered material has a value the treatment plant never will. We have written about the downstream implications separately in Amylase Enzyme Production Wastewater Treatment system.

Settling handles the spent clay and the coarse solids. A clarifier ahead of the biological stage protects the biomass from the grit that would otherwise abrade it. We have written about the downstream implications separately in lecithin production wastewater treatment.

Blending the alkaline refining wash with the acidic deodoriser condensate halves the neutralisation cost. The two streams are natural opposites and were always meant to meet.

Measured Results from Plants We Built

One reference point: a 60 m³/day installation we delivered in Foshan, Guangdong (2021) was treating feed at roughly 2,000 mg/L COD and holding discharge near 90 mg/L, about 95.5% removal.

A second unit of the same class, delivered in Hong'an, Hubei during 2021, ran 150 m³/day at 1,961 mg/L feed COD down to 200 mg/L.

process equipment overview

Recovered oil is usually destroyed or returned rather than reused, because it is hot with alkaline contaminants. The point is to keep it out of the biology, not to sell it.

Heat, pH and Biology

After fat removal and pH correction the residual is a moderate biodegradable load. The biology handles it easily once the emulsion is gone.

The streams are hot. Cooling before the equalisation tank protects the biomass from a warm, caustic slug it was not designed for.

Equalisation smooths the pH swing. Refining wash and condensate arrive at opposite ends of the scale, and a mixed tank does the neutralising for free.

Aerobic treatment behind the fat-removal step brings the residual COD and BOD down to consent. The stage is compact because most of the work happened upstream.

Operating Notes

Break the emulsion before the biology. Emulsified fat destroys a biomass that a clean stream would support easily.

Blend the alkaline and acidic streams. Refining wash and deodoriser condensate neutralise each other and save the dosing cost.

Cool the hot streams before the tank. The biology should never see a caustic, hot slug it was not built for.

Integrated Treatment Strategies

Plants dealing with comparable loads face many of the same trade-offs covered in Spunbond Wash, Binder and Finish Traces. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Picking a supplier for this kind of plant is mostly about who carries the risk when something goes wrong. We have built this equipment for more than twenty years, and we are the ones who fabricated it, programmed the controls and will still answer the phone three years from now.

In-House Fabrication

Our Guangdong works produces everything from standard modular units to fully bespoke lines. Building in-house keeps cost, schedule and quality under our own control rather than a subcontractor's goodwill.

Experience Built the Hard Way

Since the early 2000s we have commissioned plants for food and beverage processors, chemical works, electroplaters, textile mills, mines and municipalities. The lessons that stick are scaling, fouling and sludge handling — those inform every design we issue.

We Engineer the Whole Train

Screening, equalisation, biological or chemical treatment, membranes, evaporation, brine handling — the complete line comes from one organisation. Process design, mechanical, electrical and PLC programming sit under the same roof, so there is no gap for finger-pointing at handover.

Spare Parts and After-Sales Support

We carry membranes, pumps, blowers, diffusers and instruments for every system we supply. Remote support through the PLC is standard on most builds, and on-site service covers commissioning, training and urgent callouts.

Certification and Export Practice

CE marking is standard and we work to ISO 9001 procedures. Where a project calls for specific material grades, pressure vessel certification or ATEX-rated equipment, we build to that standard and ship the full documentation pack.

Documentation You Can Actually Audit

Each system ships with as-built drawings, material certificates, welding records and a functional specification. If a client's own consultant wants to review the process calculation basis, we hand it over rather than treating it as proprietary.

Frequently Asked Questions

What treatment capacity do you normally design for edible oil refinery?

Skid-mounted units cover roughly 25 to 410 m³/day depending on the duty, and parallel trains extend that further. We size against your actual peak hour flow rather than the daily average, because equalisation rarely absorbs the whole spike.

How much operator attention does the system need day to day?

Automatic control handles dosing, backwash and level control. Realistically your team spends time on chemical top-up, sample testing and sludge handling — maybe one to two hours per shift on edible oil refinery duty, less if you opt for remote monitoring.

Can the plant be modified later if our production changes?

Yes, if you tell us about likely expansion up front. Leaving room in the civil works and oversizing the equalisation tank costs far less than retrofitting later. Edible Oil Refinery Wastewater Treatment rarely fails because of bad chemistry — it usually fails because nobody planned for the second production line.

Do you export and support overseas installations?

We have shipped to the USA, Canada, Indonesia, India, Russia, Vietnam and Nigeria among others. Documentation, crating and export paperwork are handled in-house, and we support commissioning either remotely or with engineers on site.
