Corn Starch Production Wastewater Treatment: Steep Liquor, Fraction Washing and the Sulphite Stream

A wet corn mill steeps maize in warm sulphur-dioxide water to loosen the kernel, then degerms, grinds, separates starch from gluten and fibre, and dries the products. The water it leaves is a soup of soluble corn solids carried in a mildly acidic, slightly sulphited liquor. The steep liquor is the strongest fraction and the one that defines the plant. Washing the germ, fibre and gluten adds the bulk of the volume. Gluten separator overflow and evaporator condensate are the cleaner ends. The effluent is high in COD, low in pH, carrying sulphite and lactate, and it is seasonal in step with the crush.

Where the Water Comes From

Steep liquor is the load that sizes the train. Maize is soaked in warm water with sulphur dioxide for a day or more, and that liquor comes out carrying soluble protein, sugars and the lactic acid the steeping bacteria produce.

Washing the germ, fibre and gluten is the volume. Each fraction is flushed to remove the starch still stuck to it, and those wash waters make up most of the hydraulic load.

Gluten separator overflow is the stream where the last of the starch is pulled from the slurry. It is dilute compared with the steep liquor but continuous through the run. Plants dealing with comparable loads face many of the same trade-offs covered in Cultures, Whey and the Cold Ferment.

Evaporator condensate from concentrating the steep liquor is the clean end. It is low in COD and often reused in the plant rather than sent to treatment at all.

The Steep Liquor

Steep liquor is acidic and heavily loaded. The sulphur dioxide preserves it during steeping but arrives at the drain as a reducing agent the biology has to cope with. For the reuse angle specifically, Kombucha Production effluent goes further than we can here.

Lactic acid dominates the dissolved solids. It is fully biodegradable, so the load is treatable — it is just concentrated and the pH has to be lifted before the biology sees it. For the reuse angle specifically, Sake Brewing Wastewater Treatment goes further than we can here.

settling tank detail

Sulphite is stripped or oxidised in the head of the plant. A small amount of air or a holding step removes most of it, and that protects the downstream biomass from inhibition.

Concentrating the steep liquor for sale as feed additive removes the bulk of the load at the source. A plant that does this is treating a much smaller problem than one that sends it all to drain.

Washing the Fractions

Fraction washing is screened and settled at the drain. The fine corn solids recover well, and recovered solids have a feed or starch market in most regions.

The wash waters are dilute but relentless. They set the equalisation volume because they run for the whole crush and stop when the mill stops.

process equipment overview

Fibre wash carries the most suspended matter. A good screen keeps the fibre out of the tank, where it would otherwise break down and add to the septic load.

Gluten overflow is the lightest of the wash streams. It is the one most plants recycle internally first, because it is clean enough to reuse in the process before it ever reaches treatment.

Sulphite, COD and Biology

After pH correction and sulphite removal the stream is a strong, biodegradable sugar-and-protein liquor. Biology handles it, provided the head of the plant has done its job. For the reuse angle specifically, Energy Drink Production effluent goes further than we can here.

The equalisation tank absorbs the crush rhythm. Corn milling is campaign work, and the biology sees the average only if the tank is sized against the peak rather than the mean.

Anaerobic digestion is the natural fit. The high COD pays back as biogas, and the aerobic stage behind it is compact because most of the work is already done.

Measured Results from Plants We Built

For comparison, our 2021 project in Foshan, Guangdong ran at 60 m³/day with influent COD near 2,000 mg/L and treated water around 90 mg/L. That is 95.5% removal in practice, not on paper.

A second unit of the same class, delivered in Hong'an, Hubei during 2021, ran 150 m³/day at 1,961 mg/L feed COD down to 200 mg/L.

Figures are site-measured values from commissioned plants, not modelled estimates.

Sludge is stable and dewaterable. It goes to the disposal route the local rules allow, and the choice is usually logistics rather than technical.

Operating Notes

Lift the pH and strip the sulphite before the biology. The steep liquor is acidic and reducing, and the biomass does not like either.

Recover the steep liquor where a market exists. Concentrating it removes the bulk of the load at the source and pays a small credit.

Size the biology on the crush peak, not the quiet month. Corn mills run hard and then stop, and the design has to follow that.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Two decades in this industry teaches you that most treatment problems are procurement problems in disguise. Someone bought the cheapest skid, nobody checked the equalisation volume, and eighteen months on the plant cannot hold its consent limit. We build differently.

Manufacturing Base in Guangdong

Owned production lines mean we control tolerances, materials and delivery. Standard modular units and bespoke skids are both built by our own people, so schedule commitments are ours to keep.

20+ Years Across Dozens of Industries

Experience matters most when your waste stream behaves nothing like the textbook example. We have dealt with toxic organics, heavy metals, extreme salinity and refractory COD in food processing, chemical manufacturing, electroplating, mining and municipal projects.

Twenty-Plus Export Markets

We have shipped to the United States, Canada, Russia, Indonesia, India, Nigeria and Vietnam among others. Crating, export documentation and certificates are handled in-house, which keeps customs surprises to a minimum.

We Engineer the Whole Train

Screening, equalisation, biological or chemical treatment, membranes, evaporation, brine handling — the complete line comes from one organisation. Process design, mechanical, electrical and PLC programming sit under the same roof, so there is no gap for finger-pointing at handover.

Spares, Service and Commissioning

Membranes, dosing pumps, diffusers, instrumentation and blowers are stocked for the systems we sell. Our control systems support remote diagnostics, and we can put an engineer on site for commissioning, training or an unplanned shutdown.

Certification and Export Practice

CE marking is standard and we work to ISO 9001 procedures. Where a project calls for specific material grades, pressure vessel certification or ATEX-rated equipment, we build to that standard and ship the full documentation pack.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you export and support overseas installations?

We have shipped to the USA, Canada, Indonesia, India, Russia, Vietnam and Nigeria among others. Documentation, crating and export paperwork are handled in-house, and we support commissioning either remotely or with engineers on site.

What treatment capacity do you normally design for corn starch production?

Skid-mounted units cover roughly 33 to 581 m³/day depending on the duty, and parallel trains extend that further. We size against your actual peak hour flow rather than the daily average, because equalisation rarely absorbs the whole spike.

What spare parts should we hold on site?

Critical spares are pumps, dosing valves, instrumentation sensors and any specialty media. We ship a recommended spares kit with the plant and hold stock for everything we supply, so lead times on replacements stay short.
