Cassava Starch Effluent: Root Wash, Cell Sap and a Cyanogenic Load Most Plants Underestimate

Cassava starch is made by washing the roots, rasping them and washing the starch out of the pulp. The water problem looks like potato starch's cousin and then surprises you. The cell sap is just as rich in soluble carbohydrate, but cassava also carries cyanogenic compounds that release cyanide as the pulp ferments. Let that sap sit in a warm pond and you get a black, sour, toxic liquor that is harder and more hazardous to treat than anyone budgeted for. The plants that do well move the sap the same day and recover what they can before the biology sees it.

Where the Water Comes From

Root washing sends the first stream out: muddy water heavy with soil and fine root debris. Low COD, high volume, the hydraulic base of the train.

Rasping and starch washing release the cell sap — the soluble sugars and proteins from the crushed root. This is the load, and it is high. We have written about the downstream implications separately in Polycarbonate Resin Production effluent.

The pulp wash after sieving carries fine fibre and lost starch. Moderate COD, meaningful suspended solids if you let it run forward.

Equipment and floor wash finish the picture: hot, continuous, and the stream most plants forget when they size the first tank. The same selection criteria reappear in Fish Meal Plant Wastewater Treatment system, which is worth opening alongside this one.

The Cell Sap and the Cyanogen

The sap is rich in soluble carbohydrate and fully biodegradable, so biology will eat it. The trouble is what rides along with it.

Cassava pulp releases cyanogenic glycosides as it breaks down, and those turn into cyanide under the right (wrong) conditions. A stagnant, fermenting pond is exactly that condition.

The result is a black, acidic, toxic liquor that smells worse than it should and can inhibit the very treatment you would apply. This is why cassava effluent punishes storage more than potato does. Much of this mirrors the situation set out in Fly Ash Beneficiation Wastewater Treatment system.

What This Looks Like in Practice

For comparison, our 2021 project in Foshan, Guangdong ran at 60 m³/day with influent COD near 2,000 mg/L and treated water around 90 mg/L. That is 95.5% removal in practice, not on paper.

A second unit of the same class, delivered in Hong'an, Hubei during 2021, ran 150 m³/day at 1,961 mg/L feed COD down to 200 mg/L.

Figures are site-measured values from commissioned plants, not modelled estimates.

The operational rule is unforgiving: get the sap into a mixed, aerated, covered system the same day, or recover what you can and dispose of the rest by a route that accounts for the cyanide.

Recovery First

Starch lost in the pulp wash is recoverable with a fine screen or hydrocyclone. Every kilogram caught at the front is load you do not pay to aerate at the back.

Some sites recover the protein fraction by acidification, much as with potato. It trims the COD and sometimes earns a credit.

process equipment overview

Root wash solids have compost or fuel value locally. Returning them removes a solids and a small COD problem at the source.

The point is the same as every starch plant: capture at the front, because treating at the back is always more expensive than the power it saves.

Anaerobic, With Sulfide Care

At this COD, anaerobic digestion is the obvious front end and the biogas is useful on a plant that runs seasonally.

installed skid unit

Cassava sap also carries sulfur, so the sulfide risk that dogs other starch liquors applies here too. Watch the gas, not just the COD. If your site also runs this kind of duty, MBBR Wastewater Treatment system covers the cost side of the decision in more depth.

Because of the cyanogen, we prefer an aerated, mixed system over an open stagnant pond. The aeration suppresses the toxic conditions the pulp would otherwise create.

The aerobic polish after anaerobic is small. Most of the load is gone, and the residual is stabilized and easy to bring to consent.

Where This Fits in the Wider Plant

Where several streams need joint treatment, Miso Fermentation Wastewater Treatment is the more detailed reference. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Picking a supplier for this kind of plant is mostly about who carries the risk when something goes wrong. We have built this equipment for more than twenty years, and we are the ones who fabricated it, programmed the controls and will still answer the phone three years from now.

Own Factory, Real Capacity

Tanks, skids, control panels and membrane housings are built in our own Guangdong facility. Nothing critical is subcontracted, which is why we can commit to delivery dates and hold quality across a batch instead of hoping the shop floor gets it right.

Two Decades of Field Data

Food and beverage, chemicals, electroplating, textile dyeing, mining, municipal work — we have commissioned across all of them. The useful part is not the project count, it is having seen how plants fail in year seven and designing those failures out.

Complete System Responsibility

One supplier, one process guarantee. We take the plant from preliminary screening through to membrane separation, evaporation and brine management, with process, mechanical, electrical and controls engineering handled internally.

Certification and Export Practice

CE marking is standard and we work to ISO 9001 procedures. Where a project calls for specific material grades, pressure vessel certification or ATEX-rated equipment, we build to that standard and ship the full documentation pack.

Spares, Service and Commissioning

Membranes, dosing pumps, diffusers, instrumentation and blowers are stocked for the systems we sell. Our control systems support remote diagnostics, and we can put an engineer on site for commissioning, training or an unplanned shutdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a cassava starch system take to deliver?

Standard units ship in about 10 to 12 weeks. Custom trains with cell sap and the cyanogen included run longer — plan for 15 to 25 weeks once detailed engineering starts. Site installation and wet commissioning add another few weeks.

Do you handle installation and operator training?

Every unit we supply is commissioned by our own engineers. Training happens on site with your actual operators, and the O&M manual covers routine work plus troubleshooting. Remote diagnostics through the control system are included for the first year.

What spare parts should we hold on site?

Critical spares are pumps, dosing valves, instrumentation sensors and any specialty media. We ship a recommended spares kit with the plant and hold stock for everything we supply, so lead times on replacements stay short.
