MBBR Wastewater Treatment: Carriers, Biofilm and the Fine-Bubble Aeration

A moving bed biofilm reactor treats wastewater by growing the biology on small plastic carriers that move freely in an aerated tank. The carriers fill most of the tank volume, the biofilm grows on their surface, and the water flows past it continuously. There is no sludge return, because the biology is attached rather than suspended, and the only thing that leaves the tank is the water and the small amount of biofilm that shears off naturally. It is a simple process with a small footprint, and the design that works matches the carrier type to the effluent, aerates it properly and keeps the sieve at the outlet clear.

How the Process Works

The carriers are small, moulded plastic pieces with a protected internal surface, usually filled to 40 to 70 percent of the tank volume. They move with the water and the air rather than being held in place.

The biofilm grows on the carrier surface and reaches a steady thickness where growth and shear-off balance. That thickness is set by the aeration, not by a control system.

The water flows through the tank continuously, past the biofilm, and the treatment happens in the volume the carriers occupy. There is no clarifier in the loop and no sludge return.

The reactor is usually staged: two or three tanks in series, each with a different biology, because the carbon removal and the nitrification want different conditions. Plants dealing with comparable loads face many of the same trade-offs covered in Turmeric, Chili and Volatile Oil Colour.

Carrier and Biofilm

The carrier is selected by protected surface area and by the effluent it will see. A high-strength industrial effluent needs a different carrier from a dilute municipal one.

The biofilm does the work, and it does it without a recycle pump. That is the operational appeal of the process: fewer moving parts than an activated sludge plant.

Biofilm thickness is self-regulating, provided the aeration is right. Over-aerate and the biofilm shears too fast; under-aerate and it smothers, and both look like a performance problem before they look like an air problem.

Start-up is faster than an activated sludge plant, because the carriers colonise quickly and the plant does not wait for a sludge blanket to establish.

Aeration and Sieving

The aeration does two jobs: it moves the carriers and it supplies the oxygen. Both are specified together, and the air rate is set by the oxygen demand rather than by the mixing.

Fine-bubble diffusers are standard, and the diffuser layout is what decides whether the carriers actually move. Dead zones in the tank are dead biofilm in the process.

An outlet sieve retains the carriers and passes the water. It is the simplest component in the plant and the one that stops it when it blinds.

process equipment overview

The sieve is cleaned mechanically on most plants, and the cleaning schedule is written into the operating routine rather than discovered during a blockage. Where several streams need joint treatment, Sesame Processing Plant effluent is the more detailed reference.

Where It Fits

MBBR suits industrial plants that need a compact, robust biological stage without the operator burden of an activated sludge line. Food, chemical and petrochemical effluents are all common duties.

It suits retroits, where an existing tank is available and the footprint is not. A concrete tank that is already paid for is the usual reason a plant chooses the process.

It does not suit every effluent. High solids, high fat or high salinity streams need pretreatment first, and a plant that skips that step spends its first year fighting the sieve.

Removal Rates Across Our Installed Base

Across 42 commissioned plants where we hold complete COD records, influent COD ranged from 200 to 172,000 mg/L and treated effluent from 50 to 5,000 mg/L. Average removal across that set is 87.1% — not a marketing figure, but the measured mean.

That average is worth pausing on. It sits well below the 95%-plus numbers most suppliers quote, because the set includes genuinely difficult streams. On some electroplating and municipal duties the installed configuration only reaches about half the influent COD, and saying that up front is more use to you than a number the plant will never hold.

As a polishing stage behind an anaerobic reactor, or ahead of a membrane, it is a reliable middle stage. The process is flexible because the biology is attached and the hydraulics are simple. We have written about the downstream implications separately in Dough, Yeast, Flour Dust and CIP Loads.

Keep the sieve clear. It is the smallest component in the plant and the one that decides whether the rest of it runs.

Match the air rate to the oxygen demand. The mixing and the biology are both downstream of that number.

Pretreat before the carriers. Solids, fat and salt are all easier to remove before the biofilm than after it. Much of this mirrors the situation set out in Cannabis and CBD Extraction Wastewater Treatment.

Where This Fits in the Wider Plant

Plants dealing with comparable loads face many of the same trade-offs covered in Herbal Extract Manufacturing Wastewater Treatment system. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Picking a supplier for this kind of plant is mostly about who carries the risk when something goes wrong. We have built this equipment for more than twenty years, and we are the ones who fabricated it, programmed the controls and will still answer the phone three years from now.

Manufacturing Base in Guangdong

Owned production lines mean we control tolerances, materials and delivery. Standard modular units and bespoke skids are both built by our own people, so schedule commitments are ours to keep.

Two Decades of Field Data

Food and beverage, chemicals, electroplating, textile dyeing, mining, municipal work — we have commissioned across all of them. The useful part is not the project count, it is having seen how plants fail in year seven and designing those failures out.

Complete Units and Turnkey Plants

Whether you need a single package unit or a turnkey installation with civil works, we deliver the entire treatment scheme. Our engineering team covers process, mechanical, electrical and automation so one party owns the outcome.

Certification and Export Practice

CE marking is standard and we work to ISO 9001 procedures. Where a project calls for specific material grades, pressure vessel certification or ATEX-rated equipment, we build to that standard and ship the full documentation pack.

Twenty-Plus Export Markets

We have shipped to the United States, Canada, Russia, Indonesia, India, Nigeria and Vietnam among others. Crating, export documentation and certificates are handled in-house, which keeps customs surprises to a minimum.

Spares, Service and Commissioning

Membranes, dosing pumps, diffusers, instrumentation and blowers are stocked for the systems we sell. Our control systems support remote diagnostics, and we can put an engineer on site for commissioning, training or an unplanned shutdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you handle installation and operator training?

Every unit we supply is commissioned by our own engineers. Training happens on site with your actual operators, and the O&M manual covers routine work plus troubleshooting. Remote diagnostics through the control system are included for the first year.

Do you export and support overseas installations?

We have shipped to the USA, Canada, Indonesia, India, Russia, Vietnam and Nigeria among others. Documentation, crating and export paperwork are handled in-house, and we support commissioning either remotely or with engineers on site.

What happens if the incoming MBBR load exceeds the design figure?

Load swings are the most common reason plants underperform. We set the design envelope from your worst-case samples, not your average ones, and specify enough buffer in the biological stage to ride out shocks. If your process genuinely shifts up permanently, we can usually add capacity in stages.

Can you work with our existing equipment?

Often yes. We regularly integrate into existing civil structures where the concrete is sound, replacing internals and controls rather than starting over. We will tell you honestly when legacy kit is beyond economic repair.

Can the plant be modified later if our production changes?

Yes, if you tell us about likely expansion up front. Leaving room in the civil works and oversizing the equalisation tank costs far less than retrofitting later. MBBR Wastewater Treatment rarely fails because of bad chemistry — it usually fails because nobody planned for the second production line.
