Vitamin C Ascorbic Acid Production Wastewater Treatment: Two-Step Fermentation and Salts

Vitamin C is made by a classic two-step route: a fermentation produces sorbitol and then a conversion step rearranges it chemically to ascorbic acid, and the water from both steps is a heavy organic and salt load. The fermentation broth resembles other sugar fermentations in its high organic strength, and the chemical conversion adds a sodium and sulfate load that the fermentation does not have. The practical design question is how much of the organic load to digest anaerobically before the salt content makes biology difficult, because the dissolved solids are what cap the biological stage.

Two Steps, Two Loads

The fermentation step produces a broth much like other sugar fermentations: high chemical oxygen demand, some residual sugar and the cell mass of the culture. It is biodegradable and worth digesting.

The chemical conversion step introduces sodium and sulfate in quantity, because the rearrangement and the product recovery use sodium-based reagents and generate a sulfate stream on top.

The result is a combined effluent that is both organically strong and salty, and the salt is the part that limits how far biology can be pushed.

Anaerobic Then Aerobic

At the strength a vitamin C broth reaches, anaerobic treatment is the front end. It converts most of the organic load to methane and leaves a much smaller aerobic job behind. Where several streams need joint treatment, Ammonium, Fluoride and Radioactive Residue is the more detailed reference.

The broth is warm and the gas offsets a real share of the plant heat load, which is usually the argument that gets an anaerobic stage approved. If your site also runs this kind of duty, Rinse Water, Dissolved Aluminium and Phosphate covers the cost side of the decision in more depth.

settling tank detail

Sulfate in the feed produces sulfide in the digester, which is handled by dosing or gas treatment rather than avoided, and it is a routine part of operation.

Sodium and sulfate do not precipitate, and in a closed or partially closed circuit they accumulate until a bleed is required. The bleed is small in volume and high in strength, which is a different plant from the one built for the raw flow.

The dissolved solids set the reuse floor more than the organic load does, because the biology stops responding well long before the carbon is gone.

process equipment overview

Where a plant pushes reuse, the bleed stream becomes the treatment problem, and it is worth designing for explicitly. We have written about the downstream implications separately in Phosphoric Acid Plant Wastewater Treatment system.

Removal Rates Across Our Installed Base

Across 42 commissioned plants where we hold complete COD records, influent COD ranged from 200 to 172,000 mg/L and treated effluent from 50 to 5,000 mg/L. Average removal across that set is 87.1% — not a marketing figure, but the measured mean.

That average is worth pausing on. It sits well below the 95%-plus numbers most suppliers quote, because the set includes genuinely difficult streams. On some electroplating and municipal duties the installed configuration only reaches about half the influent COD, and saying that up front is more use to you than a number the plant will never hold.

Polishing and Recovery

Aerobic polishing removes the residual demand and the nitrogen the fermentation carried, and it is a modest stage behind a good digester.

installed skid unit

Where a market or an on-site use exists for the organic fraction, concentrating it reduces the load, and membrane concentration is the usual route with a low-load permeate returning to process water.

Sludge from the biological train is organic and dewaters reasonably, and it is usually composted or returned rather than handled as hazardous.

Operating Notes

Measure the salt balance before designing a reuse scheme. The dissolved solids, not the organics, set the recycle limit.

control panel and piping

Digest the organic load anaerobically first. The salt content will cap the biology, so you want the carbon gone before you reach that ceiling. We have written about the downstream implications separately in sorbitol and xylitol production wastewater treatment.

Finally, treat the bleed as its own stream. A small strong bleed is cheaper to handle than a large dilute combined flow.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Two decades in this industry teaches you that most treatment problems are procurement problems in disguise. Someone bought the cheapest skid, nobody checked the equalisation volume, and eighteen months on the plant cannot hold its consent limit. We build differently.

In-House Fabrication

Our Guangdong works produces everything from standard modular units to fully bespoke lines. Building in-house keeps cost, schedule and quality under our own control rather than a subcontractor's goodwill.

Experience Built the Hard Way

Since the early 2000s we have commissioned plants for food and beverage processors, chemical works, electroplaters, textile mills, mines and municipalities. The lessons that stick are scaling, fouling and sludge handling — those inform every design we issue.

We Engineer the Whole Train

Screening, equalisation, biological or chemical treatment, membranes, evaporation, brine handling — the complete line comes from one organisation. Process design, mechanical, electrical and PLC programming sit under the same roof, so there is no gap for finger-pointing at handover.

After the Handover

Spares for everything we install are held in stock. Remote telemetry is available on most systems, and our service engineers commission, train your operators and turn out for emergencies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which discharge standard will the treated water meet?

We design against whatever consent applies at your boundary — GB 8978, local sewer limits, or a ZLD target with no liquid discharge at all. The design basis is agreed in writing before fabrication, so there is no argument later about what "compliant" meant.

What information do you need to quote?

Water analysis for your worst-case stream, peak and average flows, discharge limits, available footprint and utilities. If you do not have a full analysis yet, we can start from a partial one and flag the gaps.

What spare parts should we hold on site?

Critical spares are pumps, dosing valves, instrumentation sensors and any specialty media. We ship a recommended spares kit with the plant and hold stock for everything we supply, so lead times on replacements stay short.

What does it cost to run, per cubic metre?

Energy dominates, then chemicals, then sludge disposal. We give you a per-cubic-metre breakdown during proposal so you can compare it against your sewer charge — treating too aggressively is a common and expensive mistake.

How do you handle sludge from this process?

Sludge handling is where most budgets quietly blow out. We size dewatering against realistic solids production, and we usually recommend a filter press for this duty. The disposal route — landfill, incineration, or a licensed contractor — should be confirmed before commissioning.

What happens if the incoming vitamin c ascorbic load exceeds the design figure?

Load swings are the most common reason plants underperform. We set the design envelope from your worst-case samples, not your average ones, and specify enough buffer in the biological stage to ride out shocks. If your process genuinely shifts up permanently, we can usually add capacity in stages.
