Rare Earth Refining Wastewater Treatment: Ammonium, Fluoride and Radioactive Residue

Rare earth refining separates a group of chemically near-identical elements using solvent extraction, and the water it produces carries three problems at once: a large ammonium load from the saponification and stripping steps, fluoride from fluorine-bearing feed minerals, and naturally occurring radionuclides that concentrate in the residue. None of these is removed by an ordinary industrial treatment plant without specific provision. The plant is therefore built as a precipitation and separation circuit with a controlled residue stream, and the residue classification governs how the whole facility is permitted.

The Ammonium Load

Solvent extraction uses saponified extractants and ammonium-based stripping and scrubbing solutions, and the spent aqueous phases carry a large ammonium sulfate or ammonium chloride load.

That ammonium concentration is high enough that a conventional nitrification-denitrification stage is a large installation rather than a polishing step.

treatment plant on site

Stripping ammonia at elevated pH and recovering it as a sulfate solution is the route many plants take, because it turns a treatment cost into a recycled reagent.

Where recovery is not economic, biological nitrogen removal is used, and it is sized on the ammonium load rather than on flow.

Fluoride and the Feed

Fluorine-bearing minerals release fluoride during acid decomposition, and that fluoride reports to the water and to the off-gas scrubber. The process logic sits close to what is described in Tyre Recycling and Pyrolysis Plant Wastewater system, particularly on the pretreatment side.

Calcium precipitation removes fluoride to its solubility floor, and the sludge is a calcium fluoride residue that carries part of the radionuclide inventory.

Fluoride also drives the materials specification for the acid decomposition and scrubbing circuits.

Radionuclides

Rare earth ores carry thorium and uranium as natural associates, and those do not follow the product. They concentrate either in the leaching residue or in a specific precipitate from the water circuit.

The residue is therefore classified and managed under a radioactive material regime in most jurisdictions, which is a permitting matter as much as an engineering one.

Keeping the radioactive fraction concentrated in one small stream, rather than distributed across all sludges, is the design objective.

Removal Rates Across Our Installed Base

Across 42 commissioned plants where we hold complete COD records, influent COD ranged from 200 to 172,000 mg/L and treated effluent from 50 to 5,000 mg/L. Average removal across that set is 87.1% — not a marketing figure, but the measured mean.

That average is worth pausing on. It sits well below the 95%-plus numbers most suppliers quote, because the set includes genuinely difficult streams. On some electroplating and municipal duties the installed configuration only reaches about half the influent COD, and saying that up front is more use to you than a number the plant will never hold.

Operating Notes

Characterise the feed for thorium and uranium before designing the circuit. The residue classification follows from the ore, not from the process.

control panel and piping

Recover ammonia where the volume justifies it. The alternative is a very large biological stage. Much of this mirrors the situation set out in Ammonia Stripping, Dewatering and Return Water.

Finally, concentrate the radioactive fraction deliberately. A plant that distributes it across every sludge has turned one managed stream into several unmanaged ones.

Combining Treatment Stages

Plants dealing with comparable loads face many of the same trade-offs covered in Sidestream Ammonia, Phosphorus and Return Load Management. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Choosing a manufacturer here comes down to one question: who is still accountable once the commissioning team flies home. Our answer is that we build and programme our own equipment, then stand behind it for the life of the plant.

Own Factory, Real Capacity

Tanks, skids, control panels and membrane housings are built in our own Guangdong facility. Nothing critical is subcontracted, which is why we can commit to delivery dates and hold quality across a batch instead of hoping the shop floor gets it right.

Two Decades of Field Data

Food and beverage, chemicals, electroplating, textile dyeing, mining, municipal work — we have commissioned across all of them. The useful part is not the project count, it is having seen how plants fail in year seven and designing those failures out.

Certification and Export Practice

CE marking is standard and we work to ISO 9001 procedures. Where a project calls for specific material grades, pressure vessel certification or ATEX-rated equipment, we build to that standard and ship the full documentation pack.

Complete System Responsibility

One supplier, one process guarantee. We take the plant from preliminary screening through to membrane separation, evaporation and brine management, with process, mechanical, electrical and controls engineering handled internally.

Documentation You Can Actually Audit

Each system ships with as-built drawings, material certificates, welding records and a functional specification. If a client's own consultant wants to review the process calculation basis, we hand it over rather than treating it as proprietary.

Twenty-Plus Export Markets

We have shipped to the United States, Canada, Russia, Indonesia, India, Nigeria and Vietnam among others. Crating, export documentation and certificates are handled in-house, which keeps customs surprises to a minimum.

Spare Parts and After-Sales Support

We carry membranes, pumps, blowers, diffusers and instruments for every system we supply. Remote support through the PLC is standard on most builds, and on-site service covers commissioning, training and urgent callouts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you work with our existing equipment?

Often yes. We regularly integrate into existing civil structures where the concrete is sound, replacing internals and controls rather than starting over. We will tell you honestly when legacy kit is beyond economic repair.

What treatment capacity do you normally design for rare earth refining?

Skid-mounted units cover roughly 35 to 1001 m³/day depending on the duty, and parallel trains extend that further. We size against your actual peak hour flow rather than the daily average, because equalisation rarely absorbs the whole spike.

How much operator attention does the system need day to day?

Automatic control handles dosing, backwash and level control. Realistically your team spends time on chemical top-up, sample testing and sludge handling — maybe one to two hours per shift on rare earth refining duty, less if you opt for remote monitoring.
