Tungsten and Tungsten Carbide Manufacturing Wastewater Treatment: APT and Ammonia

Tungsten is refined through a chemistry built around ammonium. Tungsten ore is digested and the metal is recovered as ammonium paratungstate, and that route puts ammonia, tungstate and acid into the water in a way that is specific to this metal. Tungsten carbide production then grinds and binds the powder with cobalt, adding a heavy-metal dimension to the grind and wash water. The treatment is hydrometallurgy first and heavy-metal treatment second, and the ammonia is the parameter that decides whether the plant complies.

Ammonium Paratungstate Route

Tungsten concentrate is digested, usually with alkali, and the tungstate is purified and crystallised as ammonium paratungstate. Ammonia is central to the chemistry and appears throughout the aqueous streams.

That puts ammonia — and with it, nitrogen — into the effluent at concentrations that make recovery worth more than treatment. Evaporating and recovering the ammonium salt returns product and removes nitrogen at once.

Tungstate itself is valuable and toxic at low levels. Recovery by precipitation or ion exchange keeps it in the product loop rather than the discharge, which is both economic and compliant. The same selection criteria reappear in Acetic Acid and Vinyl Acetate Production effluent, which is worth opening alongside this one.

Digest residues carry the impurities — arsenic, molybdenum, tin — from the ore, and the wash water contacting them needs its own handling. Map the residues before assuming the water is clean.

Ammonia Recovery

Ammonia from the paratungstate route is recoverable by evaporation or stripping, and returning it to the process recovers both nitrogen and water. Where recovery is not justified, biological nitrification-denitrification removes it.

Stripping needs heat or acid to drive the ammonia out of solution, and the stripped ammonia is recovered as a salt or returned. It is more economical than destroying it biologically and paying for carbon.

The discharge limit on ammonia is low because of toxicity to fish, and it tightens with pH as free ammonia. Neutralisation that overshoots pH nine converts ammonium to free ammonia and creates the problem it meant to solve. Plants dealing with comparable loads face many of the same trade-offs covered in Sulfuric Acid Plant effluent.

Instrument the ammonia load ahead of the removal stage. Fixed-ratio dosing wastes reagent when load falls and under-doses when it rises, and the second case is the consent breach. If your site also runs this kind of duty, phosphoric acid plant wastewater covers the cost side of the decision in more depth.

Tungstic Acid and Precipitation

Tungstic acid and tungstate are precipitated near neutral pH, and the precipitate is the recovered product or a classified solid waste depending on purity. The chemistry is sensitive to pH and to competing ions.

Molybdenum co-exists with tungsten geologically and behaves similarly in water, so separation matters where molybdenum is a concern. The two are not identical in their recovery, and assuming they are loses both.

Arsenic from the ore is the hazardous impurity. Where it reports to water it needs its own removal — precipitation or adsorption — and the sludge is classified accordingly.

Precipitation sludge volume is significant. Dewatering and classification have to be specified, because a tungsten plant generates more solid waste than its water volume suggests.

Reference Data from 42 Commissioned Plants

Across 42 commissioned plants where we hold complete COD records, influent COD ranged from 200 to 172,000 mg/L and treated effluent from 50 to 5,000 mg/L. Average removal across that set is 87.1% — not a marketing figure, but the measured mean.

That average is worth pausing on. It sits well below the 95%-plus numbers most suppliers quote, because the set includes genuinely difficult streams. On some electroplating and municipal duties the installed configuration only reaches about half the influent COD, and saying that up front is more use to you than a number the plant will never hold.

Carbide Grinding and Cobalt

Tungsten carbide is made by binding tungsten carbide powder with cobalt, and grinding and finishing that hard metal release cobalt and fine tungsten carbide into the wash water.

Cobalt is toxic and strictly limited, and it is removed by precipitation as hydroxide in a controlled pH window. The limit is low and the recovery is worth doing where concentration allows.

Tungsten carbide fines are solids, not dissolved metal, but they are hard, fine and abrasive to equipment. Physical removal protects the biomass and the pumps.

Keep the grind water separate from the refinery water. Mixing a cobalt-bearing grind stream into an ammonia-rich refinery stream creates a mixed hazardous effluent that is harder to treat than either alone.

Combining Treatment Stages

A related discussion worth reading here is Ammonia Plant Wastewater Treatment. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Choosing a manufacturer here comes down to one question: who is still accountable once the commissioning team flies home. Our answer is that we build and programme our own equipment, then stand behind it for the life of the plant.

Own Factory, Real Capacity

Tanks, skids, control panels and membrane housings are built in our own Guangdong facility. Nothing critical is subcontracted, which is why we can commit to delivery dates and hold quality across a batch instead of hoping the shop floor gets it right.

20+ Years Across Dozens of Industries

Experience matters most when your waste stream behaves nothing like the textbook example. We have dealt with toxic organics, heavy metals, extreme salinity and refractory COD in food processing, chemical manufacturing, electroplating, mining and municipal projects.

Complete System Responsibility

One supplier, one process guarantee. We take the plant from preliminary screening through to membrane separation, evaporation and brine management, with process, mechanical, electrical and controls engineering handled internally.

Certification and Export Practice

CE marking is standard and we work to ISO 9001 procedures. Where a project calls for specific material grades, pressure vessel certification or ATEX-rated equipment, we build to that standard and ship the full documentation pack.

After the Handover

Spares for everything we install are held in stock. Remote telemetry is available on most systems, and our service engineers commission, train your operators and turn out for emergencies.

Frequently Asked Questions

What spare parts should we hold on site?

Critical spares are pumps, dosing valves, instrumentation sensors and any specialty media. We ship a recommended spares kit with the plant and hold stock for everything we supply, so lead times on replacements stay short.

How much operator attention does the system need day to day?

Automatic control handles dosing, backwash and level control. Realistically your team spends time on chemical top-up, sample testing and sludge handling — maybe one to two hours per shift on tungsten carbide manufacturing duty, less if you opt for remote monitoring.

Do you handle installation and operator training?

Every unit we supply is commissioned by our own engineers. Training happens on site with your actual operators, and the O&M manual covers routine work plus troubleshooting. Remote diagnostics through the control system are included for the first year.

Can the plant be modified later if our production changes?

Yes, if you tell us about likely expansion up front. Leaving room in the civil works and oversizing the equalisation tank costs far less than retrofitting later. Tungsten and Tungsten Carbide Manufacturing Wastewater Treatment rarely fails because of bad chemistry — it usually fails because nobody planned for the second production line.

What information do you need to quote?

Water analysis for your worst-case stream, peak and average flows, discharge limits, available footprint and utilities. If you do not have a full analysis yet, we can start from a partial one and flag the gaps.
