Ammonia and Cyanide Removal From Agrochemical Wastewater

Ammonia and cyanide are the two parameters on agrochemical wastewater that can kill a treatment plant before it treats anything. Cyanide is a direct poison to microorganisms and must be destroyed before the water reaches a biological tank. Ammonia is less dramatic but just as capable of smothering a process through oxygen demand and nitrification alkalinity loss. Both are manageable with well-proven technology, but the order of operations is everything: get the cyanide out first, control the ammonia deliberately, and never let either blindside the biology that does the bulk of the work.

Cyanide Comes Out First

Where a chlorination or cyanuric route is in play, free cyanide and cyanuric compounds arrive in the stream and will collapse a biological seed within hours if untreated. Alkaline chlorination is the standard destruction route, converting cyanide to the far less harmful cyanate.

The chemistry demands correct pH and a measured chlorine dose, and it must be complete before any biological stage, because partial treatment leaves intermediates that are themselves problematic. We set out the wider process route in membrane fractionation agrochemical wastewater.

For complex cyanides bound to metals, pre-treatment and metal recovery may be needed first, because the cyanide is not free to react until it is released from the complex. Much of this mirrors the situation set out in edible oil refinery wastewater treatment.

We treat cyanide as a front-end hazard, not a polishing concern, and that single decision protects every downstream stage from a poisoning event no control system can undo.

Ammonia: Stripping or Biology

High-strength ammonia, common where ammonium salts or urea dominate, can be removed by air or steam stripping at high pH. Stripping is fast and simple but moves the ammonia to the air, so it needs a scrubber or an off-gas route that does not create a second problem.

Biological nitrification and denitrification removes ammonia as nitrogen gas and is far cheaper at lower concentrations, but it consumes alkalinity and oxygen and is sensitive to the toxic co-contaminants in this stream.

The crossover is concentration. Above a few hundred milligrams per litre of ammonia, stripping or a combination often beats pure biology on cost; below it, biological nitrogen removal usually wins. We have written about the downstream implications separately in Steep Liquor, Fraction Washing and the Sulphite Stream.

Because the ammonia coexists with toxicity, we almost always deal with cyanide and refractory organics upstream before trusting a nitrifying biomass to hold. Where several streams need joint treatment, Food and Beverage Wastewater Treatment system is the more detailed reference.

settling tank detail

Breakpoint chlorination oxidises ammonia to nitrogen gas by driving chlorine past the point where chloramines revert to free chlorine. It is reliable and fast, which makes it useful for polishing or for sidestream treatment.

Its downside is chemical cost and the chloride and total dissolved solids it adds, which matters on a stream already pushing the salinity ceiling that biology or membranes can tolerate.

On agrochemical wastewater we reserve it for trim duties or emergency polishing rather than primary ammonia removal, because adding salt to an already salty stream eventually closes doors downstream.

Where the discharge limit is tight on both ammonia and chloride, the conflict between the two is exactly the kind of trade-off the design basis has to settle before fabrication.

Protecting the Biology

Whatever route removes ammonia and cyanide, the biological stage downstream must be protected from shock. Segregated equalisation and a paced, measured feed are what keep a nitrifying culture alive through a production swing.

Alkalinity is the resource nitrification burns through, and an anaerobic front end does not always replace it, so we monitor and dose to keep pH in the range the bugs need.

Online ammonia and pH at the effluent, tied to diversion, stop a bad hour from becoming a dead tank, which on this duty is a real and repeated failure mode.

Reference Data from 42 Commissioned Plants

Across 42 commissioned plants where we hold complete COD records, influent COD ranged from 200 to 172,000 mg/L and treated effluent from 50 to 5,000 mg/L. Average removal across that set is 87.1% — not a marketing figure, but the measured mean.

That average is worth pausing on. It sits well below the 95%-plus numbers most suppliers quote, because the set includes genuinely difficult streams. On some electroplating and municipal duties the installed configuration only reaches about half the influent COD, and saying that up front is more use to you than a number the plant will never hold.

The same monitoring discipline that protects other sensitive biological plants applies here with a narrower margin, because the co-contaminants leave less room for error.

Designing the Order of Operations

A sensible sequence is cyanide destruction, then equalisation and any physical pre-treatment, then biological ammonia removal, then oxidation and polishing, with stripping as an option on very high ammonia.

That order keeps poisons away from bugs, treats the cheap load biologically, and spends expensive chemistry only on what is left. Reversing it is how plants end up rebuilding the biological stage within a year.

Every step's reject and regenerant needs a route before commissioning, because ammonia and cyanide removal both generate secondary streams that are easy to forget on paper.

We hold the discharge limit as the agreed design basis in writing before fabrication, so there is no later argument about what "compliant" meant when the ammonia number is read.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Two decades in this industry teaches you that most treatment problems are procurement problems in disguise. Someone bought the cheapest skid, nobody checked the equalisation volume, and eighteen months on the plant cannot hold its consent limit. We build differently.

Own Factory, Real Capacity

Tanks, skids, control panels and membrane housings are built in our own Guangdong facility. Nothing critical is subcontracted, which is why we can commit to delivery dates and hold quality across a batch instead of hoping the shop floor gets it right.

Twenty-Plus Export Markets

We have shipped to the United States, Canada, Russia, Indonesia, India, Nigeria and Vietnam among others. Crating, export documentation and certificates are handled in-house, which keeps customs surprises to a minimum.

20+ Years Across Dozens of Industries

Experience matters most when your waste stream behaves nothing like the textbook example. We have dealt with toxic organics, heavy metals, extreme salinity and refractory COD in food processing, chemical manufacturing, electroplating, mining and municipal projects.

Complete Units and Turnkey Plants

Whether you need a single package unit or a turnkey installation with civil works, we deliver the entire treatment scheme. Our engineering team covers process, mechanical, electrical and automation so one party owns the outcome.

Spares, Service and Commissioning

Membranes, dosing pumps, diffusers, instrumentation and blowers are stocked for the systems we sell. Our control systems support remote diagnostics, and we can put an engineer on site for commissioning, training or an unplanned shutdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

What spare parts should we hold on site?

Critical spares are pumps, dosing valves, instrumentation sensors and any specialty media. We ship a recommended spares kit with the plant and hold stock for everything we supply, so lead times on replacements stay short.

How do you handle sludge from this process?

Sludge handling is where most budgets quietly blow out. We size dewatering against realistic solids production, and we usually recommend a filter press for this duty. The disposal route — landfill, incineration, or a licensed contractor — should be confirmed before commissioning.

Which discharge standard will the treated water meet?

We design against whatever consent applies at your boundary — GB 8978, local sewer limits, or a ZLD target with no liquid discharge at all. The design basis is agreed in writing before fabrication, so there is no argument later about what "compliant" meant. The operating detail behind this sits in MVR evaporation agrochemical ZLD.

For adjacent process angles, Winery effluent and Rice Noodle and Vermicelli Production Wastewater Treatment system covers much of the same ground from a different duty.
