Konjac Glucomannan Processing Wastewater Treatment: Lime, Viscosity and Starch

Konjac is made by grinding the corm, removing the starch and the skin, and treating the flour with lime water so the glucomannan gels. The water that leaves is alkaline, viscous and starchy at the same time. Lime wash water carries calcium hydroxide at a pH that will harm anything downstream. Grinding and separation water carries the fine glucomannan fraction, which is the part that makes the water stringy. Starch washing and refining water carries the starch that was separated from the glucomannan. The effluent is slippery, it settles slowly, and it blinds ordinary equipment, and the design that works neutralises early and breaks the viscosity mechanically before anything biological sees the water.

Where the Water Comes From

Lime wash and treatment water carries calcium hydroxide at a pH that will harm anything downstream. It is the most alkaline stream in the plant.

Grinding and separation water carries the fine glucomannan fraction. It is the part that makes the water stringy, and it is the reason ordinary settling tanks underperform.

Starch washing and refining water carries the starch that was separated from the glucomannan, warm and settleable when fresh.

treatment plant on site

Equipment and floor washing adds volume rather than load, and its contribution is the hydraulic design of the whole plant.

Neutralisation First

pH correction comes before anything else. Acid dosing or a carbon dioxide line brings the alkaline water into the range where the downstream chemistry works, and the mixing has to be real.

settling tank detail

The neutralisation point is also where the plant sees the truth about its own variability, and operators who sample there know their real peaks. Plants dealing with comparable loads face many of the same trade-offs covered in lipf6 electrolyte production wastewater treatment.

Neutralised lime water is then metered into the general flow over hours rather than dumped in an hour, and the biology sees a diet rather than a shock.

The glucomannan fraction is broken with coagulation. A polyelectrolyte sweep at controlled pH collapses the viscosity and lets the fine particles flocculate out.

process equipment overview

Dissolved-air flotation lifts the light fraction, and a settling or thickening step handles the dense fraction, and the two are sized on the actual particle distribution rather than on an assumed one.

The operational trap is storage. Konjac water held overnight in a warm sump ferments, and the treatment plant then inherits both the load and the smell.

Biology and Polishing

After neutralisation and coagulation, the remaining load is starch and dissolved organics, and conventional anaerobic-aerobic treatment handles it. The dissolved starch is ideal anaerobic feed where volumes justify a reactor.

installed skid unit

The aerobic stage is sized on the smoothed load. Nitrification is rarely the driver, and a compact anoxic zone keeps the ammonia inside consent. We have written about the downstream implications separately in Silicon-Carbon Anode Production Wastewater Treatment.

Numbers from Comparable Installations

One reference point: a 150 m³/day installation we delivered in Hong'an, Hubei (2021) was treating feed at roughly 1,961 mg/L COD and holding discharge near 200 mg/L, about 89.8% removal.

Figures are site-measured values from commissioned plants, not modelled estimates.

Polishing, where a sensitive receiver applies, is a sand or membrane step, and its fouling rate is a good early indicator of how well the upstream viscosity control is running.

Operating Notes

Neutralise at the treatment step, not at the drain. An hour of neat lime into a biological stage is a slow, expensive way to learn about pH.

Break the viscosity mechanically. Biology does not settle and does not nitrify in stringy water.

Do not store konjac water. Move it, treat it, or feed it to biology fresh.

Where This Fits in the Wider Plant

Where several streams need joint treatment, Acid Copper Bath, Chromium Passivation and Foil Fines is the more detailed reference. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Picking a supplier for this kind of plant is mostly about who carries the risk when something goes wrong. We have built this equipment for more than twenty years, and we are the ones who fabricated it, programmed the controls and will still answer the phone three years from now.

Own Factory, Real Capacity

Tanks, skids, control panels and membrane housings are built in our own Guangdong facility. Nothing critical is subcontracted, which is why we can commit to delivery dates and hold quality across a batch instead of hoping the shop floor gets it right.

Twenty-Plus Export Markets

We have shipped to the United States, Canada, Russia, Indonesia, India, Nigeria and Vietnam among others. Crating, export documentation and certificates are handled in-house, which keeps customs surprises to a minimum.

Experience Built the Hard Way

Since the early 2000s we have commissioned plants for food and beverage processors, chemical works, electroplaters, textile mills, mines and municipalities. The lessons that stick are scaling, fouling and sludge handling — those inform every design we issue.

Complete System Responsibility

One supplier, one process guarantee. We take the plant from preliminary screening through to membrane separation, evaporation and brine management, with process, mechanical, electrical and controls engineering handled internally.

After the Handover

Spares for everything we install are held in stock. Remote telemetry is available on most systems, and our service engineers commission, train your operators and turn out for emergencies.

Documentation You Can Actually Audit

Each system ships with as-built drawings, material certificates, welding records and a functional specification. If a client's own consultant wants to review the process calculation basis, we hand it over rather than treating it as proprietary.

Frequently Asked Questions

What information do you need to quote?

Water analysis for your worst-case stream, peak and average flows, discharge limits, available footprint and utilities. If you do not have a full analysis yet, we can start from a partial one and flag the gaps.

How do you handle sludge from this process?

Sludge handling is where most budgets quietly blow out. We size dewatering against realistic solids production, and we usually recommend a filter press for this duty. The disposal route — landfill, incineration, or a licensed contractor — should be confirmed before commissioning.

Can the plant be modified later if our production changes?

Yes, if you tell us about likely expansion up front. Leaving room in the civil works and oversizing the equalisation tank costs far less than retrofitting later. Konjac Glucomannan Processing Wastewater Treatment rarely fails because of bad chemistry — it usually fails because nobody planned for the second production line.

Do you export and support overseas installations?

We have shipped to the USA, Canada, Indonesia, India, Russia, Vietnam and Nigeria among others. Documentation, crating and export paperwork are handled in-house, and we support commissioning either remotely or with engineers on site.

What treatment capacity do you normally design for konjac processing?

Skid-mounted units cover roughly 24 to 676 m³/day depending on the duty, and parallel trains extend that further. We size against your actual peak hour flow rather than the daily average, because equalisation rarely absorbs the whole spike.

Can you work with our existing equipment?

Often yes. We regularly integrate into existing civil structures where the concrete is sound, replacing internals and controls rather than starting over. We will tell you honestly when legacy kit is beyond economic repair.
