Electrolytic Copper Foil Production Wastewater Treatment: Acid Copper Bath, Chromium Passivation and Foil Fines
Electrolytic copper foil is made by plating copper from an acid sulfate bath onto a rotating titanium drum, then treating the shiny side so the active material will stick to it. The water that leaves is a plating effluent. The plating circuit produces rinse water rich in copper sulfate and sulfuric acid. The passivation and treatment steps add chromium, zinc or organic traces depending on the surface chemistry. The slitting and finishing steps add the copper fines, which are dense, valuable and abrasive. The effluent is acidic, metal-laden and loaded with a fine dense solid, and the design that works recovers the copper early and precipitates the rest at controlled pH.
Where the Water Comes From
The plating circuit produces rinse water rich in copper sulfate and sulfuric acid. It is the strongest chemical stream in the plant and the easiest one to recover from.
The passivation and surface treatment steps add chromium, zinc or organic traces depending on the finish, and they are the streams the discharge consent watches most closely.
Slitting and finishing water carries the copper foil fines. They are dense, they settle, and they are worth recovering because they are still product material.

Floor and equipment washing adds volume rather than load, and its contribution is the hydraulic design of the whole plant. The same selection criteria reappear in Polysilicon Production Wastewater Treatment system, which is worth opening alongside this one.
Copper Recovery First
The copper in the plating rinse is recovered before anything else. Where the concentration justifies it, an electrowinning or ion exchange step returns the copper to the bath, and the recovery rate decides the economics of the whole plant. We have written about the downstream implications separately in MDI and TDI Polyurethane Precursor Production Wastewater Treatment.
The economics decide it. Recovery pays where the plating runs continuously; small lines treat, and they size for the rinse load plus the treatment water rather than the average.

The recovery point is also where the plant sees the truth about its own variability, and operators who sample there know their real peaks.
Neutralisation and Precipitation
pH correction comes before anything else, and the remaining metals are precipitated at controlled pH. The operating discipline is keeping that pH where the chemistry works.
The chromium fraction, where the passivation chemistry uses it, is reduced before precipitation, and the reduction step is small and it is cheap relative to the consent exposure it removes. Where several streams need joint treatment, Granite and Marble Stone Cutting Wastewater Treatment system is the more detailed reference.
Reference Data from 42 Commissioned Plants
Across 42 commissioned plants where we hold complete COD records, influent COD ranged from 200 to 172,000 mg/L and treated effluent from 50 to 5,000 mg/L. Average removal across that set is 87.1% — not a marketing figure, but the measured mean.
That average is worth pausing on. It sits well below the 95%-plus numbers most suppliers quote, because the set includes genuinely difficult streams. On some electroplating and municipal duties the installed configuration only reaches about half the influent COD, and saying that up front is more use to you than a number the plant will never hold.

The metal-bearing sludge is classified in most jurisdictions and disposed of accordingly. It is a modest volume, and it is a predictable cost, which is the best kind.

Fines and Recirculation
A thickener on the slitting and finishing stream recovers most of the water and returns it to the rinse circuit. Water that returns is water that never becomes an effluent.
The underflow is a stable copper slurry that returns to the melting circuit where the plant's layout allows it, and the supernatant is clean enough for reuse.
Screens ahead of the thickener catch the coarse foil fraction, and they are a small cost that protects everything behind them.

Recover the copper first. The treatment plant is small because the recovery plant is doing the real work.
Reduce the chromium before precipitating it. The reduction step is cheap and the consent exposure it removes is not. We have written about the downstream implications separately in Roast Gas Scrubber and Heavy Metals.
Track metals at the headworks. The outfall tells you what happened weeks ago; the headworks tells you what is happening now.
Integrated Treatment Strategies
For the reuse angle specifically, Lysine Amino Acid Fermentation Wastewater Treatment system goes further than we can here. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.
Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer
Two decades in this industry teaches you that most treatment problems are procurement problems in disguise. Someone bought the cheapest skid, nobody checked the equalisation volume, and eighteen months on the plant cannot hold its consent limit. We build differently.
Own Factory, Real Capacity
Tanks, skids, control panels and membrane housings are built in our own Guangdong facility. Nothing critical is subcontracted, which is why we can commit to delivery dates and hold quality across a batch instead of hoping the shop floor gets it right.
Documentation You Can Actually Audit
Each system ships with as-built drawings, material certificates, welding records and a functional specification. If a client's own consultant wants to review the process calculation basis, we hand it over rather than treating it as proprietary.
20+ Years Across Dozens of Industries
Experience matters most when your waste stream behaves nothing like the textbook example. We have dealt with toxic organics, heavy metals, extreme salinity and refractory COD in food processing, chemical manufacturing, electroplating, mining and municipal projects.
Complete System Responsibility
One supplier, one process guarantee. We take the plant from preliminary screening through to membrane separation, evaporation and brine management, with process, mechanical, electrical and controls engineering handled internally.
Spare Parts and After-Sales Support
We carry membranes, pumps, blowers, diffusers and instruments for every system we supply. Remote support through the PLC is standard on most builds, and on-site service covers commissioning, training and urgent callouts.

Frequently Asked Questions
What information do you need to quote?
Water analysis for your worst-case stream, peak and average flows, discharge limits, available footprint and utilities. If you do not have a full analysis yet, we can start from a partial one and flag the gaps.
Is electrolytic copper foil treatment suitable for water reuse?
Usually yes, once the copper recovery first stage is stable. Reuse normally means adding membrane polishing to bring conductivity and COD down to your process water specification. We would need to see your reuse water limits to size it properly.
How do you handle sludge from this process?
Sludge handling is where most budgets quietly blow out. We size dewatering against realistic solids production, and we usually recommend a filter press for this duty. The disposal route — landfill, incineration, or a licensed contractor — should be confirmed before commissioning.
How long does a electrolytic copper foil system take to deliver?
Standard units ship in about 11 to 12 weeks. Custom trains with copper recovery first included run longer — plan for 14 to 20 weeks once detailed engineering starts. Site installation and wet commissioning add another few weeks.
What happens if the incoming electrolytic copper foil load exceeds the design figure?
Load swings are the most common reason plants underperform. We set the design envelope from your worst-case samples, not your average ones, and specify enough buffer in the biological stage to ride out shocks. If your process genuinely shifts up permanently, we can usually add capacity in stages.
What treatment capacity do you normally design for electrolytic copper foil production?
Skid-mounted units cover roughly 34 to 880 m³/day depending on the duty, and parallel trains extend that further. We size against your actual peak hour flow rather than the daily average, because equalisation rarely absorbs the whole spike.
