Herbal Extract Manufacturing Wastewater Treatment: Ethanol Wash, Plant Resin and Colour

An herbal extract plant soaks raw botanicals in ethanol or hot water, separates the liquid from the spent marc, and concentrates the extract by evaporation. The water it sends out is dark, strong and full of the things that were meant to stay in the product. Spent extraction solvent carries dissolved resin, sugars and pigments. Marc washing water carries the fine plant fraction. Evaporator condensate is warm and dilute but large in volume. The effluent is coloured, biodegradable and occasionally resinous enough to blind an ordinary biological stage, and the design that works recovers the solvent, breaks the resin with coagulation, and treats the condensate as a separate, simpler stream.

Where the Load Comes From

Spent extraction solvent is the strongest stream. It carries dissolved resin, sugars, pigments and the soluble fraction of the botanical, and its COD is high enough to need anaerobic treatment rather than a conventional aerobic basin.

Marc washing water carries the fine plant fraction that escapes the separation step. It settles well when fresh and blinds screens when it mats.

Evaporator condensate is the volume of the plant: warm, dilute and chemically mild. Its contribution is thermal and hydraulic rather than chemical. A related discussion worth reading here is Metal Recovery and Heavy Metal Removal.

Equipment and floor washing water carries resin traces and detergent, and it arrives in slugs that set the peak.

Solvent Recovery First

Ethanol is recovered by distillation where the volume justifies it, and the recovered solvent returns to the extraction circuit. Every litre recovered is a litre not discharged.

The condensate after recovery is still coloured and it still carries resin, but its solvent load is gone, and the treatment plant is then sized for what remains.

The economics decide it. Recovery pays where the extraction runs continuously; small batch plants treat, and they size for the wash load plus the condensate rather than the average. The process logic sits close to what is described in hydrochloric acid pickling liquor regeneration wastewater treatment, particularly on the pretreatment side.

Resin and Colour

Dissolved resin and pigment are broken with coagulation. A polyelectrolyte sweep at controlled pH collapses the resin and the colour together, and dissolved-air flotation lifts the floc out. A related discussion worth reading here is Bittern, Bromide and Salt Balance.

The floc is sticky and it holds water, and the dewatering step is specified with that in mind rather than assumed.

Numbers from Comparable Installations

We commissioned a 5 m³/day plant for this duty in Taishan, Guangdong back in 2021. Feed COD came in around 1,000 mg/L and left at 50 mg/L — 95% removal.

Where the colour is dissolved rather than particulate, an oxidation step follows coagulation, and the design accounts for the dose from the start rather than discovering it in operation. The process logic sits close to what is described in Spent Broth, Mycelium and High Organic Load, particularly on the pretreatment side.

Operating Notes

Recover the solvent before you treat the water. Solvent that returns to the circuit is solvent you never have to account for.

control panel and piping

Break the resin mechanically. Biology does not eat pigment, and colour that survives to the outfall is a consent question.

Treat the condensate separately. It is the volume of the plant and it is the easiest stream to polish.

Combining Treatment Stages

The process logic sits close to what is described in Fermentation Broth, Ammonium and High COD, particularly on the pretreatment side. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Picking a supplier for this kind of plant is mostly about who carries the risk when something goes wrong. We have built this equipment for more than twenty years, and we are the ones who fabricated it, programmed the controls and will still answer the phone three years from now.

Manufacturing Base in Guangdong

Owned production lines mean we control tolerances, materials and delivery. Standard modular units and bespoke skids are both built by our own people, so schedule commitments are ours to keep.

Certification and Export Practice

CE marking is standard and we work to ISO 9001 procedures. Where a project calls for specific material grades, pressure vessel certification or ATEX-rated equipment, we build to that standard and ship the full documentation pack.

Twenty-Plus Export Markets

We have shipped to the United States, Canada, Russia, Indonesia, India, Nigeria and Vietnam among others. Crating, export documentation and certificates are handled in-house, which keeps customs surprises to a minimum.

Experience Built the Hard Way

Since the early 2000s we have commissioned plants for food and beverage processors, chemical works, electroplaters, textile mills, mines and municipalities. The lessons that stick are scaling, fouling and sludge handling — those inform every design we issue.

We Engineer the Whole Train

Screening, equalisation, biological or chemical treatment, membranes, evaporation, brine handling — the complete line comes from one organisation. Process design, mechanical, electrical and PLC programming sit under the same roof, so there is no gap for finger-pointing at handover.

After the Handover

Spares for everything we install are held in stock. Remote telemetry is available on most systems, and our service engineers commission, train your operators and turn out for emergencies.

Let's Look at Your Numbers

Share your water analysis and site constraints and we will give you a straight assessment of the process route and the realistic operating cost before you commit to anything. Contact our engineers at WhatsApp: +86 13631765076, or find us at hkbhp.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

What information do you need to quote?

Water analysis for your worst-case stream, peak and average flows, discharge limits, available footprint and utilities. If you do not have a full analysis yet, we can start from a partial one and flag the gaps.

How do you handle sludge from this process?

Sludge handling is where most budgets quietly blow out. We size dewatering against realistic solids production, and we usually recommend a filter press for this duty. The disposal route — landfill, incineration, or a licensed contractor — should be confirmed before commissioning.

What does it cost to run, per cubic metre?

Energy dominates, then chemicals, then sludge disposal. We give you a per-cubic-metre breakdown during proposal so you can compare it against your sewer charge — treating too aggressively is a common and expensive mistake.

Do you handle installation and operator training?

Every unit we supply is commissioned by our own engineers. Training happens on site with your actual operators, and the O&M manual covers routine work plus troubleshooting. Remote diagnostics through the control system are included for the first year.
