Lecithin Production Wastewater Treatment: Degumming Sludge, Acetone Wash and Glycerol
Lecithin is made by degumming crude vegetable oil, separating the phospholipid sludge, and drying it into a product. The water that leaves is an oil-plant effluent with a solvent stream attached. Degumming sludge and its wash water carry the phospholipid fraction, the free fatty acids and the oil that escaped the separation. Solvent dewaxing and extraction adds acetone or hexane traces. Glycerolysis and modification adds the glycerol and reaction residues. The effluent is fatty, solvent-laden and slightly acidic, and the design that works recovers the sludge and the solvent early, intercepts the fat at the drain, and treats the rest as a chemical stream rather than a biological one.
Where the Water Comes From
Degumming sludge and its wash water carry the phospholipid fraction, the free fatty acids and the oil that escaped the separation. It is the main stream of the plant.
Solvent dewaxing and extraction water carries acetone or hexane traces, and it is the stream the solvent limits are written against. Where several streams need joint treatment, Solar Panel Recycling effluent is the more detailed reference.
Glycerolysis and modification adds the glycerol and reaction residues, warm and chemically active.

Floor and equipment washing adds volume rather than load, and its contribution is the hydraulic design of the whole plant.
Sludge and Solvent Recovery
The degumming sludge is recovered before anything else. It is the product, and a plant that returns it to the drying circuit removes most of its load at the source. If your site also runs this kind of duty, Rice Milling and Processing Wastewater Treatment covers the cost side of the decision in more depth.

Solvent is recovered by distillation where the volume justifies it, and the recovered solvent returns to the extraction circuit. Every litre recovered is a litre not discharged.
The economics decide it. Recovery pays where the plant runs continuously; small lines treat, and they size for the wash load plus the extraction water rather than the average. The process logic sits close to what is described in peanut processing plant wastewater treatment, particularly on the pretreatment side.
Free fat from the degumming and washing water is intercepted at the drain with a grease trap or a coalescing plate separator, and the skimmed fat is collected where the volume justifies it.

Emulsified fat survives the interceptor and is handled at the head of the treatment plant by coagulation and dissolved-air flotation, which lifts the fat and the fine solids together.
The failure mode is housekeeping. A separator drain that bypasses its trap during a cleaning campaign sends an hour of neat oil into a plant sized for traces.
Biological Treatment
After recovery, solvent stripping and flotation, the remaining load is a moderate oil-plant effluent, and conventional anaerobic-aerobic treatment handles it. Anaerobic treatment suits plants with a segregated strong stream. The same selection criteria reappear in CNSL Oil, Steaming Water and Shell Dust, which is worth opening alongside this one.

The aerobic stage is sized on the smoothed load. Greasy sludge dewaters worse, and the dewatering step is specified accordingly. Much of this mirrors the situation set out in Pickled Vegetable Processing Wastewater Treatment system.
What This Looks Like in Practice
For comparison, our 2021 project in Taishan, Guangdong ran at 5 m³/day with influent COD near 1,000 mg/L and treated water around 50 mg/L. That is 95% removal in practice, not on paper.
| Location | Year | Flow | Feed COD | Treated COD | Removal |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Taishan, Guangdong | 2021 | 5 m³/d | 1,000 mg/L | 50 mg/L | 95% |
Figures are site-measured values from commissioned plants, not modelled estimates.
Foam from the fat and protein traces appears in the aeration basin in bursts, and a defoamer line is the standard answer.

Operating Notes
Recover the sludge and the solvent first. The treatment plant is small because the recovery plant is doing the real work.
Intercept the fat at the drain. The trap is cheap there and the flotation unit is expensive here.
Watch the sludge. Fatty floc dewaters worse than ordinary biological sludge, and it shows up on the filter cake first.
Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer
Choosing a manufacturer here comes down to one question: who is still accountable once the commissioning team flies home. Our answer is that we build and programme our own equipment, then stand behind it for the life of the plant.
Manufacturing Base in Guangdong
Owned production lines mean we control tolerances, materials and delivery. Standard modular units and bespoke skids are both built by our own people, so schedule commitments are ours to keep.
20+ Years Across Dozens of Industries
Experience matters most when your waste stream behaves nothing like the textbook example. We have dealt with toxic organics, heavy metals, extreme salinity and refractory COD in food processing, chemical manufacturing, electroplating, mining and municipal projects.
Twenty-Plus Export Markets
We have shipped to the United States, Canada, Russia, Indonesia, India, Nigeria and Vietnam among others. Crating, export documentation and certificates are handled in-house, which keeps customs surprises to a minimum.
We Engineer the Whole Train
Screening, equalisation, biological or chemical treatment, membranes, evaporation, brine handling — the complete line comes from one organisation. Process design, mechanical, electrical and PLC programming sit under the same roof, so there is no gap for finger-pointing at handover.
After the Handover
Spares for everything we install are held in stock. Remote telemetry is available on most systems, and our service engineers commission, train your operators and turn out for emergencies.
Certification and Export Practice
CE marking is standard and we work to ISO 9001 procedures. Where a project calls for specific material grades, pressure vessel certification or ATEX-rated equipment, we build to that standard and ship the full documentation pack.

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if the incoming lecithin production load exceeds the design figure?
Load swings are the most common reason plants underperform. We set the design envelope from your worst-case samples, not your average ones, and specify enough buffer in the biological stage to ride out shocks. If your process genuinely shifts up permanently, we can usually add capacity in stages.
Which discharge standard will the treated water meet?
We design against whatever consent applies at your boundary — GB 8978, local sewer limits, or a ZLD target with no liquid discharge at all. The design basis is agreed in writing before fabrication, so there is no argument later about what "compliant" meant.
What spare parts should we hold on site?
Critical spares are pumps, dosing valves, instrumentation sensors and any specialty media. We ship a recommended spares kit with the plant and hold stock for everything we supply, so lead times on replacements stay short.
