Amylase Enzyme Production Wastewater Treatment: Fermentation Broth, Biomass and Extraction Residue

Industrial amylase is fermented by a Bacillus or Aspergillus strain, then separated from the broth, extracted and purified into a liquid or dried product. The water that leaves is a fermentation effluent with a protein product attached. Broth residue carries the residual starch, the nitrogen source and the metabolites. Biomass separation adds the cell fraction. Extraction and purification adds the liquor streams and the filter wash water. The effluent is high in COD, warm and rich in protein, and the design that works takes the biomass out early, treats the broth residue as strong anaerobic feed, and sizes the polishing around the residual colour.

Where the Water Comes From

Fermentation broth residue carries the residual starch, the nitrogen source and the metabolites of the culture. It is the strongest stream by organic load and it is entirely biodegradable.

Biomass separation adds the cell fraction from the centrifuges and filters, dense and settleable when fresh.

Extraction and purification adds the liquor streams and the filter wash water, warm and chemically mild.

treatment plant on site

Clean-in-place circuits add detergent, heat and slugs, and their volume is what the equalisation tank is sized against. Much of this mirrors the situation set out in Acid Recovery and Iron Chloride.

The cell fraction is removed early. A settling or thickening step takes out the bulk of it before the biological stage sees the water, and the recovered biomass is disposed of with the plant's solid waste.

settling tank detail

Screens ahead of the thickener catch the coarse fraction, and they are a small cost that protects everything behind them. If your site also runs this kind of duty, Bromine Production Wastewater Treatment covers the cost side of the decision in more depth.

The operational trap is storage. Biomass water held overnight in a warm sump ferments, and the treatment plant then inherits both the load and the smell.

Anaerobic Route

The dissolved load in the broth residue is ideal anaerobic feed: soluble, warm and free of toxic inhibitors. Upflow anaerobic reactors take it directly and convert most of its COD to biogas.

process equipment overview

The biogas is genuinely useful in a plant that dries enzyme product all day, and the credit is what usually justifies the anaerobic step.

Anaerobic effluent still carries nitrogen and residual organics, so an aerobic stage follows, and it is sized smaller than a stand-alone aerobic plant would be.

Removal Rates Across Our Installed Base

Across 42 commissioned plants where we hold complete COD records, influent COD ranged from 200 to 172,000 mg/L and treated effluent from 50 to 5,000 mg/L. Average removal across that set is 87.1% — not a marketing figure, but the measured mean.

That average is worth pausing on. It sits well below the 95%-plus numbers most suppliers quote, because the set includes genuinely difficult streams. On some electroplating and municipal duties the installed configuration only reaches about half the influent COD, and saying that up front is more use to you than a number the plant will never hold.

Aerobic and Polishing

Plants without anaerobic capacity run extended aeration on the combined stream, and it works, at the cost of a larger basin and a larger power bill. Where several streams need joint treatment, Citric Acid Fermentation Wastewater Treatment is the more detailed reference.

The nitrogen in the broth means some ammonia, and a compact anoxic zone in front of aeration keeps it inside consent without much thought.

Foaming is the practical nuisance in aerobic treatment of protein streams. A defoamer dosing point on the aeration basin is cheap insurance.

Operating Notes

Remove the biomass early. Biology does not settle and does not nitrify in water full of cells.

Treat the broth residue as a strong industrial stream. Its clarity hides its strength. For the reuse angle specifically, Monosodium Glutamate Production Wastewater Treatment system goes further than we can here.

Equalise the batch dumps. The biology should never see a slug, and in this industry the slugs come from the cleaning schedule.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Picking a supplier for this kind of plant is mostly about who carries the risk when something goes wrong. We have built this equipment for more than twenty years, and we are the ones who fabricated it, programmed the controls and will still answer the phone three years from now.

Own Factory, Real Capacity

Tanks, skids, control panels and membrane housings are built in our own Guangdong facility. Nothing critical is subcontracted, which is why we can commit to delivery dates and hold quality across a batch instead of hoping the shop floor gets it right.

Twenty-Plus Export Markets

We have shipped to the United States, Canada, Russia, Indonesia, India, Nigeria and Vietnam among others. Crating, export documentation and certificates are handled in-house, which keeps customs surprises to a minimum.

20+ Years Across Dozens of Industries

Experience matters most when your waste stream behaves nothing like the textbook example. We have dealt with toxic organics, heavy metals, extreme salinity and refractory COD in food processing, chemical manufacturing, electroplating, mining and municipal projects.

We Engineer the Whole Train

Screening, equalisation, biological or chemical treatment, membranes, evaporation, brine handling — the complete line comes from one organisation. Process design, mechanical, electrical and PLC programming sit under the same roof, so there is no gap for finger-pointing at handover.

Certification and Export Practice

CE marking is standard and we work to ISO 9001 procedures. Where a project calls for specific material grades, pressure vessel certification or ATEX-rated equipment, we build to that standard and ship the full documentation pack.

Documentation You Can Actually Audit

Each system ships with as-built drawings, material certificates, welding records and a functional specification. If a client's own consultant wants to review the process calculation basis, we hand it over rather than treating it as proprietary.

Spares, Service and Commissioning

Membranes, dosing pumps, diffusers, instrumentation and blowers are stocked for the systems we sell. Our control systems support remote diagnostics, and we can put an engineer on site for commissioning, training or an unplanned shutdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you export and support overseas installations?

We have shipped to the USA, Canada, Indonesia, India, Russia, Vietnam and Nigeria among others. Documentation, crating and export paperwork are handled in-house, and we support commissioning either remotely or with engineers on site.

Is amylase enzyme production treatment suitable for water reuse?

Usually yes, once the biomass and solids stage is stable. Reuse normally means adding membrane polishing to bring conductivity and COD down to your process water specification. We would need to see your reuse water limits to size it properly.

What spare parts should we hold on site?

Critical spares are pumps, dosing valves, instrumentation sensors and any specialty media. We ship a recommended spares kit with the plant and hold stock for everything we supply, so lead times on replacements stay short.

How much operator attention does the system need day to day?

Automatic control handles dosing, backwash and level control. Realistically your team spends time on chemical top-up, sample testing and sludge handling — maybe one to two hours per shift on amylase enzyme production duty, less if you opt for remote monitoring.

How long does a amylase enzyme production system take to deliver?

Standard units ship in about 9 to 10 weeks. Custom trains with biomass and solids included run longer — plan for 16 to 23 weeks once detailed engineering starts. Site installation and wet commissioning add another few weeks.

Can you work with our existing equipment?

Often yes. We regularly integrate into existing civil structures where the concrete is sound, replacing internals and controls rather than starting over. We will tell you honestly when legacy kit is beyond economic repair.
