Cane Sugar Refinery Wastewater Treatment: Mill Juice, Condensate and the Mud That Will Not Settle

A cane sugar refinery is a seasonal plant that turns a mountain of cane into a few weeks of intense operation, and the water tells that story. The largest volume is the wash and maceration water from the diffuser and mills, carrying cane mud, fine fibre and a lot of dissolved sugar. Evaporator and vacuum-pan condensates are the cleaner streams, often reused rather than discharged. The filter cake and the lime mud are the solids that refuse to settle quickly and regularly bed the clarification tank if screening is skipped. The load is seasonal, sugary, warm and biologically straightforward — the operational difficulty is the solids and the stop-start calendar, not the chemistry.

Where the Water Comes From

Maceration and diffuser water is the volume that sizes the train. Cane is washed and leached to pull the juice out, and that water leaves carrying mud, fine bagasse and enough dissolved sucrose to feed a small digester.

Mill and imbibition water adds more of the same at lower strength. It runs for the whole crush and stops when the mill stops, so the equalisation volume follows the campaign rather than the day.

Evaporator and vacuum-pan condensate is the clean end. It is low in COD and most plants recycle it into the process, which quietly shrinks the discharge the treatment train ever sees.

Lime mud and filter cake are the solids problem. They are fine, alkaline and slow to settle, and a blinded screen dumps the whole load forward onto a clarifier that was never built for it.

The Sugar Load

Dissolved sucrose is the heart of the COD, and it is about as biodegradable as wastewater gets. The question is never whether biology can take it, but how much of it you recover first.

A lot of plants recover sugar rather than treat it. Juice clarification and better imbibition cut the load at the source, and that beats any downstream unit for cost every time.

settling tank detail

What sugar you miss lands in the equalisation tank warm and inviting to microbes — including the wrong ones. A tank that goes septic in the heat of a crush is a different problem from a fresh feed, and much harder to steady.

Solids and the Mud

Cane mud is the fraction that beds clarifiers. Screened early it is a nuisance; skipped it is a shutdown, because the fine fraction packs the sludge blanket and the overflow goes cloudy.

A bar screen and a clarifier at the drain take most of the inorganic load before anything expensive sees it. The bagasse fibre that escapes is organic and settles slowly, so the screen has to be cleaned on a real schedule, not when someone remembers. Much of this mirrors the situation set out in Lime, Viscosity and Starch.

Numbers from Comparable Installations

One reference point: a 60 m³/day installation we delivered in Foshan, Guangdong (2021) was treating feed at roughly 2,000 mg/L COD and holding discharge near 90 mg/L, about 95.5% removal.

Figures are site-measured values from commissioned plants, not modelled estimates.

Recovered mud has a use as field lime or boiler fuel in many regions. Returning it removes both a solids headache and a COD one at the source, which is the part most plants under-use.

Seasonality and Biology

The crush defines everything. A plant sized on the quiet week will overload in the peak week, and the classic failure is a dead biomass in the third week of a hard run. Much of this mirrors the situation set out in Caramel Colour Production Wastewater Treatment.

After screening and pH correction the stream is a strong sugar liquor. Anaerobic digestion takes the bulk and returns biogas, and the aerobic stage behind it is compact because most of the work is done upstream. Plants dealing with comparable loads face many of the same trade-offs covered in stevia extract production wastewater treatment.

Equalisation has to absorb the campaign rhythm, not just the daily one. The biology sees the average only if the tank holds the peak, and sugar mills swing harder than almost any food plant.

installed skid unit

Recover sugar before you treat it. Clarification and tighter imbibition remove the load at the source for a fraction of the cost of any downstream unit.

Screen the mud at the drain and keep the screen clean. A blinded screen is the fastest route to a bedded clarifier and a cloudy discharge.

Size the biology on the peak crush week, not the seasonal average. Sugar mills run hard and then stop, and the design has to follow that calendar. For the reuse angle specifically, Erythritol Production effluent goes further than we can here.

Where This Fits in the Wider Plant

If your site also runs this kind of duty, Amylase Enzyme Production Wastewater Treatment covers the cost side of the decision in more depth. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Choosing a manufacturer here comes down to one question: who is still accountable once the commissioning team flies home. Our answer is that we build and programme our own equipment, then stand behind it for the life of the plant.

Own Factory, Real Capacity

Tanks, skids, control panels and membrane housings are built in our own Guangdong facility. Nothing critical is subcontracted, which is why we can commit to delivery dates and hold quality across a batch instead of hoping the shop floor gets it right.

20+ Years Across Dozens of Industries

Experience matters most when your waste stream behaves nothing like the textbook example. We have dealt with toxic organics, heavy metals, extreme salinity and refractory COD in food processing, chemical manufacturing, electroplating, mining and municipal projects.

We Engineer the Whole Train

Screening, equalisation, biological or chemical treatment, membranes, evaporation, brine handling — the complete line comes from one organisation. Process design, mechanical, electrical and PLC programming sit under the same roof, so there is no gap for finger-pointing at handover.

Certification and Export Practice

CE marking is standard and we work to ISO 9001 procedures. Where a project calls for specific material grades, pressure vessel certification or ATEX-rated equipment, we build to that standard and ship the full documentation pack.

Spare Parts and After-Sales Support

We carry membranes, pumps, blowers, diffusers and instruments for every system we supply. Remote support through the PLC is standard on most builds, and on-site service covers commissioning, training and urgent callouts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What treatment capacity do you normally design for cane sugar refinery?

Skid-mounted units cover roughly 26 to 977 m³/day depending on the duty, and parallel trains extend that further. We size against your actual peak hour flow rather than the daily average, because equalisation rarely absorbs the whole spike.

What spare parts should we hold on site?

Critical spares are pumps, dosing valves, instrumentation sensors and any specialty media. We ship a recommended spares kit with the plant and hold stock for everything we supply, so lead times on replacements stay short.

Do you export and support overseas installations?

We have shipped to the USA, Canada, Indonesia, India, Russia, Vietnam and Nigeria among others. Documentation, crating and export paperwork are handled in-house, and we support commissioning either remotely or with engineers on site.

Can the plant be modified later if our production changes?

Yes, if you tell us about likely expansion up front. Leaving room in the civil works and oversizing the equalisation tank costs far less than retrofitting later. Cane Sugar Refinery Wastewater Treatment rarely fails because of bad chemistry — it usually fails because nobody planned for the second production line.

Do you handle installation and operator training?

Every unit we supply is commissioned by our own engineers. Training happens on site with your actual operators, and the O&M manual covers routine work plus troubleshooting. Remote diagnostics through the control system are included for the first year.

What information do you need to quote?

Water analysis for your worst-case stream, peak and average flows, discharge limits, available footprint and utilities. If you do not have a full analysis yet, we can start from a partial one and flag the gaps.
