Beet Sugar Wastewater Treatment: Cossette Wash, Thin Juice and the Campaign That Fills the Equalisation Tank

Beet sugar is made in a frantic campaign that runs for a few months a year, and the wastewater reflects that intensity. The cossette — shredded beet — is washed and leached, and that water carries soil, fine pulp and a great deal of dissolved sugar. Juice clarification and thick-juice concentration add more load, and the lime that beet factories use to purify the juice shows up as a high alkalinity and a settling problem of its own. The stream is seasonal, sugary, warm and treatable, but the stop-start calendar and the suspended solids are what actually decide the design.

Where the Water Comes From

Cossette wash is the volume that sizes the train. Shredded beet is leached to pull the sucrose, and the wash water leaves carrying soil, fine pulp and enough dissolved sugar to feed a digester.

Juice clarification and thick-juice concentration add the stronger fractions. The mud and the concentrates carry most of the dissolved COD that the biology later sees.

Lime and carbonation water are the alkaline end. Beet factories purify with lime, and that shows up as high alkalinity and a fine precipitate that beds clarifiers if screening is skipped. For the reuse angle specifically, Acid Whey, Lactose and the Curd Wash goes further than we can here.

Condensate from evaporation is the clean stream. It is low in COD and often reused in the process, which quietly shrinks the discharge the treatment train ever sees.

The Sugar and the Soil

Dissolved sucrose is the COD heart, and it is about as biodegradable as wastewater gets. The question is how much you recover before treatment, not whether biology can take it. The same selection criteria reappear in Wax, Sugar and Hot Wash Water, which is worth opening alongside this one.

Soil and fine pulp are the solids. They settle slowly and they are the fraction that beds the clarifier if the screen is blinded or on the wrong schedule.

Recovered solids have a use as cattle feed or soil conditioner in many regions. Returning them removes both a solids and a COD problem at the source, which most plants under-use.

The Lime Problem

Beet factories purify with lime, and that sludge has to go somewhere. A clarifier sized for it handles the load; a tank that is not beds up and the overflow goes cloudy.

process equipment overview

The alkalinity buffers the pH, which is a small mercy — the stream rarely swings like a brewery's does — but the precipitate is fine and demands real settlement time. If your site also runs this kind of duty, jam and preserve production wastewater treatment covers the cost side of the decision in more depth.

Skim the lime mud on a schedule. Left to accumulate it packs the sludge blanket, and the recovery of a bedded clarifier is slow and expensive.

Campaign and Biology

The crush defines everything. A plant sized on the quiet week overloads in the peak week, and the classic failure is a dead biomass in the third week of a hard run.

Measured Results from Plants We Built

For comparison, our 2021 project in Foshan, Guangdong ran at 60 m³/day with influent COD near 2,000 mg/L and treated water around 90 mg/L. That is 95.5% removal in practice, not on paper.

A second unit of the same class, delivered in Hong'an, Hubei during 2021, ran 150 m³/day at 1,961 mg/L feed COD down to 200 mg/L.

After screening and recovery the stream is a strong sugar liquor. Anaerobic digestion takes the bulk and returns biogas, and the aerobic stage behind it is compact.

Equalisation has to absorb the campaign rhythm. The biology sees the average only if the tank holds the peak, and beet factories swing harder than almost any food plant.

What We Tell Factories First

Recover sugar before you treat it. Better clarification and tighter extraction cut the load at the source for a fraction of any downstream unit's cost. The same selection criteria reappear in yogurt and cultured dairy wastewater treatment, which is worth opening alongside this one.

Size the lime clarifier properly. The precipitate is fine and slow; a tank built for coarse solids will bed and fail.

Build the biology for the peak campaign week. Beet runs hard and then stops, and the design has to follow that calendar.

Where This Fits in the Wider Plant

We have written about the downstream implications separately in Milk Powder Production Wastewater Treatment system. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Picking a supplier for this kind of plant is mostly about who carries the risk when something goes wrong. We have built this equipment for more than twenty years, and we are the ones who fabricated it, programmed the controls and will still answer the phone three years from now.

In-House Fabrication

Our Guangdong works produces everything from standard modular units to fully bespoke lines. Building in-house keeps cost, schedule and quality under our own control rather than a subcontractor's goodwill.

Experience Built the Hard Way

Since the early 2000s we have commissioned plants for food and beverage processors, chemical works, electroplaters, textile mills, mines and municipalities. The lessons that stick are scaling, fouling and sludge handling — those inform every design we issue.

Complete Units and Turnkey Plants

Whether you need a single package unit or a turnkey installation with civil works, we deliver the entire treatment scheme. Our engineering team covers process, mechanical, electrical and automation so one party owns the outcome.

Spares, Service and Commissioning

Membranes, dosing pumps, diffusers, instrumentation and blowers are stocked for the systems we sell. Our control systems support remote diagnostics, and we can put an engineer on site for commissioning, training or an unplanned shutdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it cost to run, per cubic metre?

Energy dominates, then chemicals, then sludge disposal. We give you a per-cubic-metre breakdown during proposal so you can compare it against your sewer charge — treating too aggressively is a common and expensive mistake.

How long does a beet sugar system take to deliver?

Standard units ship in about 9 to 13 weeks. Custom trains with sugar and the soil included run longer — plan for 14 to 21 weeks once detailed engineering starts. Site installation and wet commissioning add another few weeks.

Is beet sugar treatment suitable for water reuse?

Usually yes, once the sugar and the soil stage is stable. Reuse normally means adding membrane polishing to bring conductivity and COD down to your process water specification. We would need to see your reuse water limits to size it properly.
