Casein Production Wastewater Treatment: Acid Whey, Lactose and the Curd Wash

A casein plant acidifies skim milk to precipitate the protein, cuts and washes the curd, and dries it into powder, leaving an acid whey stream behind. The water it leaves is a dairy-protein effluent dominated by one thing: acid whey. Precipitation and curd wash water carry the lactose and the minerals the curd left behind. Acid addition lowers the pH in a hard slug. CIP circuits add the hot, caustic counter-slug. The effluent is lactose-rich, low in pH at times and stronger than the milk that fed it, and the design that works buffers the acid, treats the lactose as the strong, easy carbon it is, and rides the two opposing slugs that define a casein plant.

Where the Load Comes From

Precipitation and curd wash water carries the lactose and the minerals the curd left behind. It is the volume of the plant and the stream the equalisation tank is sized against.

Acid addition lowers the pH in a hard slug, and the treatment train is specified to absorb it without the biology souring out.

treatment plant on site

CIP circuits add hot, caustic and soapy slugs, and their peaks set the design of the equalisation tank.

Small protein bleed from the curd line adds the load the precipitation was supposed to keep, and its contribution is the peak on a bad cut day. If your site also runs this kind of duty, RO Reject, Evaporator Condensate and Wash Water covers the cost side of the decision in more depth.

Acid Whey and the Two Slugs

The acid whey is the character of the plant: low pH, high lactose. A plant that lets it hit the biology directly spends a week recovering from an afternoon.

The equalisation tank buffers the acid against the caustic CIP slug, and the two opposing streams meet there rather than at the biology.

Where a buyer exists, the whey is hauled or evaporated for feed before the water plant, and the residual is a fraction of the original load. A related discussion worth reading here is Plant-Based Milk Production effluent.

Lactose and Nitrogen

Lactose in the whey is a strong, fully biodegradable carbon source. Anaerobic treatment suits the segregated strong stream, and the biogas offsets the fuel the dryers already burn. We have written about the downstream implications separately in Lactic Acid Fermentation Wastewater Treatment system.

The nitrogen from residual protein means some ammonia, and a compact anoxic zone keeps it inside consent. Foam from the sugar and protein traces appears in bursts, and a defoamer line is standard.

installed skid unit

The aerobic stage behind the anaerobic step is sized modestly, because the load after digestion is small and the rhythm is what it must smooth. Where several streams need joint treatment, Chitin and Chitosan Production Wastewater Treatment system is the more detailed reference.

Numbers from Comparable Installations

We commissioned a 5 m³/day plant for this duty in Taishan, Guangdong back in 2021. Feed COD came in around 1,000 mg/L and left at 50 mg/L — 95% removal.

Operating Notes

Buffer the acid whey before the biology. The tank exists to absorb slugs, not to pass them on.

control panel and piping

Segregate the whey from the CIP where you can. The two streams are opposites, and meeting them in the equalisation tank is cheaper than meeting them in the basin.

Size the biology on the lactose, not on the average. Casein whey is stronger than it looks. The process logic sits close to what is described in spodumene lithium concentrate processing wastewater treatment, particularly on the pretreatment side.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Picking a supplier for this kind of plant is mostly about who carries the risk when something goes wrong. We have built this equipment for more than twenty years, and we are the ones who fabricated it, programmed the controls and will still answer the phone three years from now.

Own Factory, Real Capacity

Tanks, skids, control panels and membrane housings are built in our own Guangdong facility. Nothing critical is subcontracted, which is why we can commit to delivery dates and hold quality across a batch instead of hoping the shop floor gets it right.

20+ Years Across Dozens of Industries

Experience matters most when your waste stream behaves nothing like the textbook example. We have dealt with toxic organics, heavy metals, extreme salinity and refractory COD in food processing, chemical manufacturing, electroplating, mining and municipal projects.

Complete Units and Turnkey Plants

Whether you need a single package unit or a turnkey installation with civil works, we deliver the entire treatment scheme. Our engineering team covers process, mechanical, electrical and automation so one party owns the outcome.

Documentation You Can Actually Audit

Each system ships with as-built drawings, material certificates, welding records and a functional specification. If a client's own consultant wants to review the process calculation basis, we hand it over rather than treating it as proprietary.

Certification and Export Practice

CE marking is standard and we work to ISO 9001 procedures. Where a project calls for specific material grades, pressure vessel certification or ATEX-rated equipment, we build to that standard and ship the full documentation pack.

Spares, Service and Commissioning

Membranes, dosing pumps, diffusers, instrumentation and blowers are stocked for the systems we sell. Our control systems support remote diagnostics, and we can put an engineer on site for commissioning, training or an unplanned shutdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is casein production treatment suitable for water reuse?

Usually yes, once the acid whey and the two slugs stage is stable. Reuse normally means adding membrane polishing to bring conductivity and COD down to your process water specification. We would need to see your reuse water limits to size it properly.

Can you work with our existing equipment?

Often yes. We regularly integrate into existing civil structures where the concrete is sound, replacing internals and controls rather than starting over. We will tell you honestly when legacy kit is beyond economic repair.

Do you handle installation and operator training?

Every unit we supply is commissioned by our own engineers. Training happens on site with your actual operators, and the O&M manual covers routine work plus troubleshooting. Remote diagnostics through the control system are included for the first year.

What treatment capacity do you normally design for casein production?

Skid-mounted units cover roughly 43 to 505 m³/day depending on the duty, and parallel trains extend that further. We size against your actual peak hour flow rather than the daily average, because equalisation rarely absorbs the whole spike.

What spare parts should we hold on site?

Critical spares are pumps, dosing valves, instrumentation sensors and any specialty media. We ship a recommended spares kit with the plant and hold stock for everything we supply, so lead times on replacements stay short.
