High-salinity wastewater from desalination, chemical, pharmaceutical, and metal processing industries cannot be discharged directly, and a zero liquid discharge (ZLD) strategy often requires evaporation to concentrate and recover the brine. This article compares two mainstream evaporation approaches: mechanical vapor recompression (MVR), which uses a compressor to recycle latent heat and minimize external steam demand, and low-temperature waste heat evaporation, which exploits low-grade heat that would otherwise be wasted. It compares energy consumption, capital cost, footprint, operational complexity, and the application scenarios where each is the better fit. It also covers how to combine evaporation with crystallization, how to evaluate a proposal, and what to expect during factory testing, shipment inspection, installation preparation, and on-site commissioning.
