Malt House Wastewater Treatment: Steep Water, Germination and High BOD

Malting germinates barley to make malt, and the steeping and germination steps produce a warm, sweet, high-strength wastewater. Steep water and the wash from the germination floor carry dissolved sugar, rootlets and fine solids, and the water is high in biochemical oxygen demand. The load is seasonal with the malting schedule and putrescible, so it turns sour quickly. Treat it as a strong, sugary biodegradable stream with good solids removal and a steady biological finish.

A Sweet, Strong Stream

Steeping wets the barley and the first wash-off carries dissolved sugar and fine solids, and that is the start of the load.

The germination floor wash adds rootlets and more sugar, and because the grain is actively growing, the water is rich in soluble organics.

The water is high in BOD and putrescible, so holding time is the enemy. A tank that is not turned over becomes a smell and a compliance problem within a day.

treatment plant on site

Flow follows the malting schedule. The load pulses with each batch, and the equalisation volume has to absorb that.

Rootlets and Fine Solids

Rootlets are the coarse solid from germination, and recovering them as feed removes a load fraction before the water reaches the treatment plant.

settling tank detail

Fine solids from the floor wash settle poorly and clog, so good screening and sedimentation protect every downstream unit.

The dissolved sugar passes every screen, so biology or coagulation has to deal with it, and that is the standard first move on this duty.

Because the sugar is soluble, a single screen does nothing, and the biomass is what actually eats the load.

Removal Rates Across Our Installed Base

Across 42 commissioned plants where we hold complete COD records, influent COD ranged from 200 to 172,000 mg/L and treated effluent from 50 to 5,000 mg/L. Average removal across that set is 87.1% — not a marketing figure, but the measured mean.

That average is worth pausing on. It sits well below the 95%-plus numbers most suppliers quote, because the set includes genuinely difficult streams. On some electroplating and municipal duties the installed configuration only reaches about half the influent COD, and saying that up front is more use to you than a number the plant will never hold.

Equalisation and Biology

The stream varies in strength by the hour as batches move. A mixed, buffered equalisation tank is what lets the biological stage run steady.

At the loads a malt house reaches, anaerobic digestion ahead of aerobic recovers energy as biogas and shrinks the aerated stage. The gas offsets a real part of the plant energy bill.

installed skid unit

Aerobic polishing after anaerobic removes residual BOD and the nitrogen the grain contributes, and it is smaller than it would be without the anaerobic front end.

Sludge from malting treatment is organic and dewaters moderately, but the fine solids make it slippery, so dewatering needs conditioning.

Operating Notes

Recover rootlets as feed where volumes justify it. On a malt house the recovered solids are product, and taking them out first shrinks the water problem.

control panel and piping

Size the equalisation for the real batch swings. Malting runs in batches, and the consent breach is what gets remembered. We have written about the downstream implications separately in magnesium production wastewater treatment.

Finally, keep the sweet water turning over. Malt effluent sours within a day, so short retention and prompt treatment beat a large idle tank. If your site also runs this kind of duty, Petrol Station UST Remediation system covers the cost side of the decision in more depth.

Integrated Treatment Strategies

Much of this mirrors the situation set out in Oleochemical Plant Wastewater Treatment system. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Choosing a manufacturer here comes down to one question: who is still accountable once the commissioning team flies home. Our answer is that we build and programme our own equipment, then stand behind it for the life of the plant.

In-House Fabrication

Our Guangdong works produces everything from standard modular units to fully bespoke lines. Building in-house keeps cost, schedule and quality under our own control rather than a subcontractor's goodwill.

Certification and Export Practice

CE marking is standard and we work to ISO 9001 procedures. Where a project calls for specific material grades, pressure vessel certification or ATEX-rated equipment, we build to that standard and ship the full documentation pack.

Two Decades of Field Data

Food and beverage, chemicals, electroplating, textile dyeing, mining, municipal work — we have commissioned across all of them. The useful part is not the project count, it is having seen how plants fail in year seven and designing those failures out.

Complete Units and Turnkey Plants

Whether you need a single package unit or a turnkey installation with civil works, we deliver the entire treatment scheme. Our engineering team covers process, mechanical, electrical and automation so one party owns the outcome.

Spares, Service and Commissioning

Membranes, dosing pumps, diffusers, instrumentation and blowers are stocked for the systems we sell. Our control systems support remote diagnostics, and we can put an engineer on site for commissioning, training or an unplanned shutdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is malt house treatment suitable for water reuse?

Usually yes, once the rootlets and fine solids stage is stable. Reuse normally means adding membrane polishing to bring conductivity and COD down to your process water specification. We would need to see your reuse water limits to size it properly.

How do you handle sludge from this process?

Sludge handling is where most budgets quietly blow out. We size dewatering against realistic solids production, and we usually recommend a filter press for this duty. The disposal route — landfill, incineration, or a licensed contractor — should be confirmed before commissioning.

What information do you need to quote?

Water analysis for your worst-case stream, peak and average flows, discharge limits, available footprint and utilities. If you do not have a full analysis yet, we can start from a partial one and flag the gaps.

How much operator attention does the system need day to day?

Automatic control handles dosing, backwash and level control. Realistically your team spends time on chemical top-up, sample testing and sludge handling — maybe one to two hours per shift on malt house duty, less if you opt for remote monitoring.

What happens if the incoming malt house load exceeds the design figure?

Load swings are the most common reason plants underperform. We set the design envelope from your worst-case samples, not your average ones, and specify enough buffer in the biological stage to ride out shocks. If your process genuinely shifts up permanently, we can usually add capacity in stages.

Which discharge standard will the treated water meet?

We design against whatever consent applies at your boundary — GB 8978, local sewer limits, or a ZLD target with no liquid discharge at all. The design basis is agreed in writing before fabrication, so there is no argument later about what "compliant" meant.
