Citric Acid Fermentation Wastewater Treatment: Spent Broth, Mycelium and High Organic Load

Citric acid is made by fermenting a sugar feed with a fungal culture, and the water that leaves the process is one of the heavier organic effluents in food ingredient manufacturing. The spent broth carries residual sugar, organic acid and a mass of fungal mycelium, and the precipitation step used to recover the product adds a sulfate stream on top. The organic fraction is biodegradable and worth digesting; the mineral fraction is not, and it is the part that ends up as sludge. Treat the two separately and the plant is straightforward. Treat them together and the sludge volume grows for no reason.

What Leaves the Fermenter

After the product is recovered, the spent broth still holds dissolved organics from the sugar feed and from the metabolism of the culture itself. The biochemical oxygen demand is high by food-industry standards and the water is acidic before neutralisation.

The mycelium is the visible part of the load. It is a light, filamentous solid that floats rather than settles in its raw state, so the separation step decides how much of it reaches the biology.

Residual sugar is the part that drives the oxygen demand. Anything recovered upstream is load the aeration system never has to pay for.

The stream is also warm. Fermentation and downstream evaporation return warm water, and temperature is a design input rather than a detail.

Because the culture is a fungus rather than a bacterial sludge, the solids behave differently from an ordinary activated sludge and need their own separation approach.

Mycelium Separation

Filamentous solids blind a conventional filter cloth quickly, so the usual route is a mechanical screen or a dissolved air flotation stage sized for a light, bulky solid.

Where the plant presses the mycelium, the press liquor goes back into the strong stream, so the separation step is really a load-splitting decision rather than a disposal step. The same selection criteria reappear in Uranium Mining and Milling effluent, which is worth opening alongside this one.

The recovered cake has value as a feed or soil conditioner in many markets, which turns the separation from a cost into a small credit.

The classic recovery route precipitates the acid as a calcium salt and splits it with sulfuric acid, and that step produces a calcium sulfate stream that is separate from the fermentation load.

Calcium sulfate has a solubility floor. It will not disappear, and in a closed water circuit it accumulates until something is bled out.

process equipment overview

Keeping the precipitation stream away from the biological stage keeps the mineral solids out of the sludge and leaves the digester working on organics only. If your site also runs this kind of duty, Iron Ore Beneficiation and Pellet Plant effluent covers the cost side of the decision in more depth.

Where a plant has moved to a chromatographic or membrane recovery route, the sulfate stream shrinks considerably and the water circuit gets easier to close. Much of this mirrors the situation set out in aircraft mro facility wastewater treatment.

Anaerobic Then Aerobic

At the strength a citric acid broth reaches, anaerobic treatment is the front end. It converts most of the organic load to methane and leaves a much smaller aerobic job behind.

What Our Project Data Actually Shows

Across 42 commissioned plants where we hold complete COD records, influent COD ranged from 200 to 172,000 mg/L and treated effluent from 50 to 5,000 mg/L. Average removal across that set is 87.1% — not a marketing figure, but the measured mean.

That average is worth pausing on. It sits well below the 95%-plus numbers most suppliers quote, because the set includes genuinely difficult streams. On some electroplating and municipal duties the installed configuration only reaches about half the influent COD, and saying that up front is more use to you than a number the plant will never hold.

The broth is acidic, so buffering and alkalinity management is part of running the digester, not an optional extra. An unbuffered acid feed will sour a reactor quickly.

Aerobic polishing takes out the residual demand and handles the nitrogen that the fermentation carry-over contributes. Plants dealing with comparable loads face many of the same trade-offs covered in Coal Gasification and Syngas Plant Wastewater Treatment.

The gas from digestion offsets a real share of the plant heat load, which is usually the argument that gets an anaerobic stage approved.

Operating Notes

Split the mineral stream from the organic stream at source. Mixing them multiplies sludge volume for no treatment benefit.

Separate mycelium before biology. A filamentous solid that reaches a reactor changes its settling behaviour and its sludge handling.

Finally, watch alkalinity, not just pH. An acidic, high-strength feed consumes buffering capacity faster than the pH probe suggests.

Combining Treatment Stages

For the reuse angle specifically, Waste Oil Re-refining Plant Wastewater Treatment goes further than we can here. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Choosing a manufacturer here comes down to one question: who is still accountable once the commissioning team flies home. Our answer is that we build and programme our own equipment, then stand behind it for the life of the plant.

Own Factory, Real Capacity

Tanks, skids, control panels and membrane housings are built in our own Guangdong facility. Nothing critical is subcontracted, which is why we can commit to delivery dates and hold quality across a batch instead of hoping the shop floor gets it right.

Twenty-Plus Export Markets

We have shipped to the United States, Canada, Russia, Indonesia, India, Nigeria and Vietnam among others. Crating, export documentation and certificates are handled in-house, which keeps customs surprises to a minimum.

20+ Years Across Dozens of Industries

Experience matters most when your waste stream behaves nothing like the textbook example. We have dealt with toxic organics, heavy metals, extreme salinity and refractory COD in food processing, chemical manufacturing, electroplating, mining and municipal projects.

We Engineer the Whole Train

Screening, equalisation, biological or chemical treatment, membranes, evaporation, brine handling — the complete line comes from one organisation. Process design, mechanical, electrical and PLC programming sit under the same roof, so there is no gap for finger-pointing at handover.

Spare Parts and After-Sales Support

We carry membranes, pumps, blowers, diffusers and instruments for every system we supply. Remote support through the PLC is standard on most builds, and on-site service covers commissioning, training and urgent callouts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you work with our existing equipment?

Often yes. We regularly integrate into existing civil structures where the concrete is sound, replacing internals and controls rather than starting over. We will tell you honestly when legacy kit is beyond economic repair.

What information do you need to quote?

Water analysis for your worst-case stream, peak and average flows, discharge limits, available footprint and utilities. If you do not have a full analysis yet, we can start from a partial one and flag the gaps.

Do you handle installation and operator training?

Every unit we supply is commissioned by our own engineers. Training happens on site with your actual operators, and the O&M manual covers routine work plus troubleshooting. Remote diagnostics through the control system are included for the first year.
