Uranium Mining and Milling Wastewater Treatment: Radium, Radionuclides and Heavy Metals

Uranium mining and milling produces water contaminated with the decay series rather than with the product alone. Radium is usually the constituent that drives treatment design, ahead of uranium itself, and it is removed by a mechanism — co-precipitation with barium sulphate — that has no analogue in conventional industrial wastewater practice. Add heavy metals, process reagents and long-lived tailings seepage and the duty becomes as much a radiological containment problem as a water treatment one.

Radium Is the Design Case

Radium-226 is produced by decay of uranium-238 in the ore and concentrates in process water and tailings pore water. It behaves chemically like barium and like calcium, which is useful — and it is radiologically the most significant constituent in most effluents.

Removal is by co-precipitation with barium sulphate. Adding barium chloride and sulphate, or using existing sulphate with added barium, precipitates barium sulphate and carries radium into the crystal lattice. It works well and it is specific to this duty.

The precipitate is radioactive waste. That is the part plants underestimate: radium removal converts a water problem into a solid waste problem, and the solid is usually classified and regulated more tightly than the water was.

Optimise barium dose rather than maximising it. Excess barium in the discharge is itself a concern in many jurisdictions, and there is an optimum dose rather than a more-is-better relationship.

Uranium and Thorium

Uranium in process water is generally present as the uranyl ion, or complexed with carbonate or sulphate depending on leaching chemistry. Removal is by ion exchange, by precipitation at elevated pH, or by adsorption depending on speciation.

Carbonate complexing matters a great deal. In alkaline carbonate leach circuits uranium forms stable anionic complexes that resist precipitation and require anion exchange rather than cation exchange or hydroxide precipitation. The process logic sits close to what is described in olive oil mill wastewater treatment, particularly on the pretreatment side.

Thorium is far less soluble and largely reports to the solids. Where it does appear in water it precipitates readily near neutral pH.

Speciation determines the treatment, not total metal concentration.Test for the complexes actually present, because a method selected on total uranium can fail completely against a complexed form.

Mill tailings retain the bulk of the radiological inventory and generate seepage for decades. Water management at the tailings facility usually dominates the site water balance and the closure cost, far more than the mill circuit itself.

Seepage collection and return is standard. Preventing exfiltration in the first place is better, and liner specification, underdrainage and water balance control are the measures that actually work.

What Our Project Data Actually Shows

Across 42 commissioned plants where we hold complete COD records, influent COD ranged from 200 to 172,000 mg/L and treated effluent from 50 to 5,000 mg/L. Average removal across that set is 87.1% — not a marketing figure, but the measured mean.

That average is worth pausing on. It sits well below the 95%-plus numbers most suppliers quote, because the set includes genuinely difficult streams. On some electroplating and municipal duties the installed configuration only reaches about half the influent COD, and saying that up front is more use to you than a number the plant will never hold.

Cover design determines long-term performance. A cover that limits both water infiltration and radon emanation is the difference between a facility that closes and one that requires perpetual active management.

Plan closure at the design stage. Facilities designed without a closure concept routinely require expensive retrofitting of exactly the features that would have been cheap to build initially.

Process Reagents

Acid leaching with sulphuric acid produces acidic, sulphate-bearing water requiring neutralisation. Lime neutralisation generates gypsum sludge that carries radium and heavy metals, and that sludge is classified waste.

Solvent extraction reagent losses follow uranium circuits, with the same entrainment and solubility mechanisms as anywhere else. Recovery is both economic and environmental.

Where alkaline leaching is used, the reagent chemistry differs entirely and so do treatment requirements. Do not assume knowledge transfers between the two circuits.

Operating Notes

Monitor radium, uranium and gross alpha separately.Total activity measurements miss changes in composition that matter for both treatment and compliance, and the individual radionuclides behave differently through the plant. Where several streams need joint treatment, Raw Wool Scouring Wastewater Treatment system is the more detailed reference.

Characterise every sludge stream against its intended disposal route before it is produced. Retrospective classification of accumulated radioactive sludge is expensive and constrains options severely.

Finally, treat worker protection as a design discipline alongside environmental compliance. The same constituents that drive effluent limits drive occupational exposure, and the controls are not identical.

Combining Treatment Stages

For the reuse angle specifically, Spent Acid, Iron and Red Gypsum goes further than we can here. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Choosing a manufacturer here comes down to one question: who is still accountable once the commissioning team flies home. Our answer is that we build and programme our own equipment, then stand behind it for the life of the plant.

Own Factory, Real Capacity

Tanks, skids, control panels and membrane housings are built in our own Guangdong facility. Nothing critical is subcontracted, which is why we can commit to delivery dates and hold quality across a batch instead of hoping the shop floor gets it right.

Certification and Export Practice

CE marking is standard and we work to ISO 9001 procedures. Where a project calls for specific material grades, pressure vessel certification or ATEX-rated equipment, we build to that standard and ship the full documentation pack.

Experience Built the Hard Way

Since the early 2000s we have commissioned plants for food and beverage processors, chemical works, electroplaters, textile mills, mines and municipalities. The lessons that stick are scaling, fouling and sludge handling — those inform every design we issue.

Documentation You Can Actually Audit

Each system ships with as-built drawings, material certificates, welding records and a functional specification. If a client's own consultant wants to review the process calculation basis, we hand it over rather than treating it as proprietary.

Complete System Responsibility

One supplier, one process guarantee. We take the plant from preliminary screening through to membrane separation, evaporation and brine management, with process, mechanical, electrical and controls engineering handled internally.

After the Handover

Spares for everything we install are held in stock. Remote telemetry is available on most systems, and our service engineers commission, train your operators and turn out for emergencies.

Twenty-Plus Export Markets

We have shipped to the United States, Canada, Russia, Indonesia, India, Nigeria and Vietnam among others. Crating, export documentation and certificates are handled in-house, which keeps customs surprises to a minimum.

Let's Look at Your Numbers

Share your water analysis and site constraints and we will give you a straight assessment of the process route and the realistic operating cost before you commit to anything. Contact our engineers at WhatsApp: +86 13631765076, or find us at hkbhp.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you handle installation and operator training?

Every unit we supply is commissioned by our own engineers. Training happens on site with your actual operators, and the O&M manual covers routine work plus troubleshooting. Remote diagnostics through the control system are included for the first year.

What does it cost to run, per cubic metre?

Energy dominates, then chemicals, then sludge disposal. We give you a per-cubic-metre breakdown during proposal so you can compare it against your sewer charge — treating too aggressively is a common and expensive mistake.

Do you export and support overseas installations?

We have shipped to the USA, Canada, Indonesia, India, Russia, Vietnam and Nigeria among others. Documentation, crating and export paperwork are handled in-house, and we support commissioning either remotely or with engineers on site.

Can the plant be modified later if our production changes?

Yes, if you tell us about likely expansion up front. Leaving room in the civil works and oversizing the equalisation tank costs far less than retrofitting later. Uranium Mining and Milling Wastewater Treatment rarely fails because of bad chemistry — it usually fails because nobody planned for the second production line.
