Tyre Recycling and Pyrolysis Plant Wastewater: Oil, Char Fines and Sulphur Compounds

Tyre recycling splits broadly into two routes with very different water problems. Mechanical granulation needs wash water for the rubber crumb and produces a moderate load of rubber fines and steel cord debris. Pyrolysis adds a far more difficult stream: emulsified pyrolysis oil, dissolved sulphur species and fine carbon char that resists both settling and filtration.Plants doing both usually have to design two separate treatment trains.

Mechanical Recycling: Wash Water First

Ambient or cryogenic granulation produces rubber crumb and a fine fraction that carries zinc from the tyre compound and fibres from the textile reinforcement. Wash water picks up rubber fines, zinc oxide and surfactants if they are used.

The dominant physical characteristic is suspended solids that float rather than settle. Rubber particles are hydrophobic and light. Gravity separation designed for mineral solids will perform badly here, and it is worth testing settleability on the actual stream before committing to clarifier sizing. The same selection criteria reappear in Electrolytic Manganese Wastewater Treatment system, which is worth opening alongside this one.

Dissolved air flotation performs much better on this duty. With correct coagulation it removes the rubber fines cleanly, and the float layer dewaters reasonably. We have written about the downstream implications separately in Graphite Anode Material Wastewater.

Zinc is usually the compliance driver. It leaches from rubber crumb slowly and continuously, so even a well-run solids removal step leaves a dissolved fraction that needs precipitation or a polishing exchange step.

Pyrolysis Brings Emulsified Oil

Pyrolysis off-gas condensation produces a two-phase condensate: pyrolysis oil and an aqueous phase. That aqueous phase carries dissolved organics — phenols, benzene, toluene, polycyclic species — and emulsified oil that is stable enough to survive static separation indefinitely.

Acid cracking followed by chemical emulsion breaking is usually necessary before anything downstream will work. Adjusting to mildly acidic conditions destabilises the emulsion; coagulant and polymer then flocculate what remains. Skipping straight to biological treatment because bench results looked acceptable is a common and expensive error.

Treat the aqueous condensate as a concentrated waste rather than a dilute stream. Volumes are small and concentrations are high, and trying to dilute it into general site drainage only multiplies the volume requiring treatment.

Odour is persistent and travels. Sealing tanks and routing vent gas to carbon or a scrubber is not optional in most locations.

Measured Results from Plants We Built

One reference point: a 6 m³/day installation we delivered in Wenshui, Shanxi (2021) was treating feed at roughly 172,000 mg/L COD and holding discharge near 5,000 mg/L, about 97.1% removal. The train was hydrolysis acidification + DAF + oil separation + ultrafiltration.

Pyrolysis char is fine, light and high in surface area. It passes conventional screens, blinds filters rapidly, and carries adsorbed organics through any separation step that does not address it directly.

Char also behaves as an adsorbent inside the treatment plant itself, taking up dosed chemicals and reducing their effective concentration. Plants frequently find that coagulant demand falls once char is removed upstream, and dosing based on raw-water jar testing is consistently too low.

Remove it early and physically. Flotation is effective; so is media filtration with appropriate backwash frequency.

Expect the char handling system itself to need attention. It is abrasive, it dries into airborne dust, and it is black.Containing it costs more than most plant layouts allow for.

Sulphur Compounds and Biological Limits

Vulcanisation puts sulphur into every tyre. Pyrolysis redistributes it into hydrogen sulphide, mercaptans, thiosulphate and organic sulphides, spread between the gas phase, the oil and the water. The process logic sits close to what is described in Amine Degradation Products, Oily Condensate and Hydrotest Water, particularly on the pretreatment side.

Biological treatment handles the dissolved fraction adequately once oil and solids are removed, because concentrations are moderate. It handles them poorly if loaded with free oil, and biomass inhibition from undissolved pyrolysis oil is the usual failure mode.

Odour control deserves its own line in the budget.Sulphide and mercaptan odour thresholds are extremely low, meaning trace concentrations generate complaints long before any analytical non-compliance appears.

Equipment That Survives This Duty

Choose separators for floatables, not settlers. Specifying a clarifier because it worked on a mineral application elsewhere will disappoint, and the floatable behaviour of rubber is the reason.

Protect every pump handling char slurry with hardened wear parts and expect shortened intervals. This duty is abrasive in a way that standard municipal selections do not anticipate. We have written about the downstream implications separately in Spirits Distillery Wastewater Treatment system.

Design for intermittent operation honestly. Many tyre recycling plants do not run continuously, and biological treatment fed intermittently needs either a fill-and-draw regime or a feed buffer to keep the biomass alive between campaigns.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Choosing a manufacturer here comes down to one question: who is still accountable once the commissioning team flies home. Our answer is that we build and programme our own equipment, then stand behind it for the life of the plant.

In-House Fabrication

Our Guangdong works produces everything from standard modular units to fully bespoke lines. Building in-house keeps cost, schedule and quality under our own control rather than a subcontractor's goodwill.

Experience Built the Hard Way

Since the early 2000s we have commissioned plants for food and beverage processors, chemical works, electroplaters, textile mills, mines and municipalities. The lessons that stick are scaling, fouling and sludge handling — those inform every design we issue.

Complete Units and Turnkey Plants

Whether you need a single package unit or a turnkey installation with civil works, we deliver the entire treatment scheme. Our engineering team covers process, mechanical, electrical and automation so one party owns the outcome.

Spares, Service and Commissioning

Membranes, dosing pumps, diffusers, instrumentation and blowers are stocked for the systems we sell. Our control systems support remote diagnostics, and we can put an engineer on site for commissioning, training or an unplanned shutdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the plant be modified later if our production changes?

Yes, if you tell us about likely expansion up front. Leaving room in the civil works and oversizing the equalisation tank costs far less than retrofitting later. Tyre Recycling and Pyrolysis Plant Wastewater rarely fails because of bad chemistry — it usually fails because nobody planned for the second production line.

How do you handle sludge from this process?

Sludge handling is where most budgets quietly blow out. We size dewatering against realistic solids production, and we usually recommend a filter press for this duty. The disposal route — landfill, incineration, or a licensed contractor — should be confirmed before commissioning.

Can you work with our existing equipment?

Often yes. We regularly integrate into existing civil structures where the concrete is sound, replacing internals and controls rather than starting over. We will tell you honestly when legacy kit is beyond economic repair.

What does it cost to run, per cubic metre?

Energy dominates, then chemicals, then sludge disposal. We give you a per-cubic-metre breakdown during proposal so you can compare it against your sewer charge — treating too aggressively is a common and expensive mistake.
