Graphite Anode Material Wastewater: Acid Purification, Fluoride and Graphitisation Furnace Gas

Graphite anode material sits between a carbon plant and a chemical purification operation, and the wastewater reflects both. Graphitisation at close to three thousand degrees produces furnace gas that is scrubbed, while downstream acid purification produces an acidic, fluoride-bearing liquor. The two have almost nothing in common chemically and should not be treated together.

Two Streams Worth Keeping Apart

The thermal side comes from graphitisation furnaces. Off-gas carries sulphur dioxide, particulate and tarry volatiles from the pitch binder, and wet scrubbing produces a liquor containing tar, phenolic compounds and sulphite. It is acidic and oily.

The chemical side is acid purification. Crude graphite is treated with mixed acid — typically hydrofluoric with hydrochloric or nitric — to dissolve residual metal impurities. The spent acid and subsequent rinse water carry fluoride, dissolved metals and strong acidity.

Blending them produces a stream that is acidic, oily, fluoridic and phenolic — technically treatable, but far more expensive than treating each appropriately. Keep them separate from the start.

Fluoride is the constituent most likely to drive consent compliance here. Concentrations in spent pickling liquor can reach thousands of milligrams per litre. A related discussion worth reading here is Airport Deicing Runoff Treatment.

Calcium precipitation as calcium fluoride is the first step and removes the bulk, but calcium fluoride has finite solubility and typically leaves fluoride in the range of ten to twenty milligrams per litre rather than below one.

Where a tighter limit applies, a second stage is needed: aluminium salts or a specialised adsorbent media, usually after pH adjustment. Activated alumina works well on this duty but requires regeneration and careful pH control.

Note that fluoride analysis is affected by complexation with dissolved metals. Make sure your laboratory method reports free fluoride rather than total, or you will be chasing a number that does not reflect what treatment can achieve. If your site also runs this kind of duty, Fibreglass and Mineral Wool effluent covers the cost side of the decision in more depth.

Acid Neutralisation and Metals

Spent acid needs neutralising, and lime is the conventional choice because it also precipitates fluoride. The trade-off is sludge volume — neutralising strong acid with lime generates substantial gypsum and metal hydroxide solids.

Removal Rates Across Our Installed Base

Across 42 commissioned plants where we hold complete COD records, influent COD ranged from 200 to 172,000 mg/L and treated effluent from 50 to 5,000 mg/L. Average removal across that set is 87.1% — not a marketing figure, but the measured mean.

That average is worth pausing on. It sits well below the 95%-plus numbers most suppliers quote, because the set includes genuinely difficult streams. On some electroplating and municipal duties the installed configuration only reaches about half the influent COD, and saying that up front is more use to you than a number the plant will never hold.

Dissolved metals from the purification step — iron, aluminium, and traces of whatever impurities were in the feed coke — precipitate as hydroxides across a range of pH values. A staged approach, precipitating at one pH then polishing at another, generally gives better results and a more manageable sludge than a single stage. The same selection criteria reappear in Rare Earth Mining and Refining Wastewater Treatment, which is worth opening alongside this one.

Recovering and regenerating spent acid is worth evaluating at larger plants. Diffusion dialysis or acid recovery systems can return a meaningful fraction of the free acid, reducing both neutralisation cost and sludge volume.

Furnace Gas Scrubber Liquor

Scrubber water from graphitisation carries tar and oil that separate reasonably well by gravity, followed by dissolved phenolics and sulphite that do not.

Tar separation first is essential, because tar coats everything downstream and quickly blinds filters and packing. Skimming with adequate retention, then dissolved air flotation for the dispersed fraction, handles it.

Sulphite contributes chemical oxygen demand without contributing much to biological demand once oxidised, and simple aeration converts it to sulphate before biological treatment. Phenolic compounds from the binder require acclimatised biology or adsorption, depending on concentration.

Operational Points

Closed-loop scrubbing water is standard on the furnace side and reduces discharge volume substantially; the constraint on recycling is chloride and dissolved solids build-up, so include a purge.

On the purification side, counter-current rinsing reduces both water use and the volume of fluoride-bearing effluent more cheaply than any treatment step. The same selection criteria reappear in Yeast and Enzyme Manufacturing Wastewater Treatment system, which is worth opening alongside this one.

Finally, treat fluoride monitoring as a routine control parameter rather than a compliance-only test. It responds quickly to changes in acid strength and rinse efficiency, and it is the cheapest early warning available. The same selection criteria reappear in carbon black production wastewater treatment, which is worth opening alongside this one.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Picking a supplier for this kind of plant is mostly about who carries the risk when something goes wrong. We have built this equipment for more than twenty years, and we are the ones who fabricated it, programmed the controls and will still answer the phone three years from now.

Own Factory, Real Capacity

Tanks, skids, control panels and membrane housings are built in our own Guangdong facility. Nothing critical is subcontracted, which is why we can commit to delivery dates and hold quality across a batch instead of hoping the shop floor gets it right.

Experience Built the Hard Way

Since the early 2000s we have commissioned plants for food and beverage processors, chemical works, electroplaters, textile mills, mines and municipalities. The lessons that stick are scaling, fouling and sludge handling — those inform every design we issue.

Complete System Responsibility

One supplier, one process guarantee. We take the plant from preliminary screening through to membrane separation, evaporation and brine management, with process, mechanical, electrical and controls engineering handled internally.

After the Handover

Spares for everything we install are held in stock. Remote telemetry is available on most systems, and our service engineers commission, train your operators and turn out for emergencies.

Getting Started

Send us a water analysis and your production profile and we will tell you honestly what the process should look like and roughly what it costs to build and run. Reach our engineering team on WhatsApp: +86 13631765076 or via hkbhp.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much operator attention does the system need day to day?

Automatic control handles dosing, backwash and level control. Realistically your team spends time on chemical top-up, sample testing and sludge handling — maybe one to two hours per shift on graphite anode material duty, less if you opt for remote monitoring.

Do you handle installation and operator training?

Every unit we supply is commissioned by our own engineers. Training happens on site with your actual operators, and the O&M manual covers routine work plus troubleshooting. Remote diagnostics through the control system are included for the first year.

Can the plant be modified later if our production changes?

Yes, if you tell us about likely expansion up front. Leaving room in the civil works and oversizing the equalisation tank costs far less than retrofitting later. Graphite Anode Material Wastewater rarely fails because of bad chemistry — it usually fails because nobody planned for the second production line.

What information do you need to quote?

Water analysis for your worst-case stream, peak and average flows, discharge limits, available footprint and utilities. If you do not have a full analysis yet, we can start from a partial one and flag the gaps.

Which discharge standard will the treated water meet?

We design against whatever consent applies at your boundary — GB 8978, local sewer limits, or a ZLD target with no liquid discharge at all. The design basis is agreed in writing before fabrication, so there is no argument later about what "compliant" meant.
