Silicon Carbide Production Wastewater Treatment: Acid Washing, Silica Fume and Carbon

Silicon carbide is made in a resistance furnace from silica sand and carbon, and the crude product that comes out is a dark, abrasive mass that has to be crushed, washed and classified before it is worth anything. The washing step is where the water is: acid solutions remove the metallic and unreacted impurities, and the wash water leaves carrying free acid, fine silica, carbon dust and traces of fluoride from the sand. The effluent is acidic, loaded with a hard fine solid that wears everything it touches, and coloured dark with carbon. The design that works neutralises early, removes the abrasive fines with a thickener, and returns the recovered water to the washing circuit.

Where the Water Comes From

The acid washing circuit is the strongest stream. It carries free acid, the dissolved fraction of the impurities, and the fine oxide that comes off the crude product.

Crushing and classifying water carries the silica and carbon fines. They are hard, they settle, and they wear pumps that were chosen for clean water.

Furnace and cooler scrubber water is warm and dilute, and it carries the fume fraction in trace form. Much of this mirrors the situation set out in MDI and TDI Polyurethane Precursor Production effluent.

treatment plant on site

Floor and equipment washing adds volume rather than load, and its contribution is the hydraulic design of the whole plant.

Neutralisation and Metals

pH correction comes before anything else. Lime dosing lifts the water above the range where the downstream chemistry works, and the mixing has to be real.

Neutralisation precipitates a share of the dissolved metals as hydroxide, which joins the solids in the thickener rather than travelling to the outfall.

Fluoride traces from the sand are removed with a calcium dose where the consent requires it, and the dose is set by jar test rather than assumption.

Abrasive Fines and Recirculation

A thickener on the crushing and classifying stream recovers most of the water and returns it to the washing circuit. Water that returns is water that never becomes an effluent.

The underflow is a dense, abrasive slurry, and the equipment that handles it is specified with the wear in mind. The recovery rate decides the size of everything downstream. Where several streams need joint treatment, Sawing Slurry and Suspended Solids Recycling is the more detailed reference.

Screens ahead of the thickener catch the coarse fraction, and they are a small cost that protects everything behind them. If your site also runs this kind of duty, Molybdenum Roasting and Ammonium Molybdate Production effluent covers the cost side of the decision in more depth.

The clarified water is the plant's best candidate for reuse in crushing, classifying and dust suppression, and the loop is easy to close because those duties accept water of modest quality.

Reference Data from Our Own Projects

One reference point: a 5 m³/day installation we delivered in Taishan, Guangdong (2021) was treating feed at roughly 1,000 mg/L COD and holding discharge near 50 mg/L, about 95% removal.

Figures are site-measured values from commissioned plants, not modelled estimates.

The discharge, where it still exists, is the final polishing step: clarified, pH-corrected and monitored, and its quality is a report card on the upstream recovery rather than a design target of its own.

Where the recovery target is high, a membrane step polishes the clarified water, and the concentrate from that step returns to the neutralisation circuit rather than becoming a new problem.

Operating Notes

Neutralise early. Acidic water into a thickener is a slow, expensive way to learn about pH. Where several streams need joint treatment, Lysine Amino Acid Fermentation effluent is the more detailed reference.

Return the thickener water. The recovery rate is the single number that decides the size of the treatment plant.

Specify the wear. Silicon carbide fines are harder than the equipment that moves them, and the maintenance schedule is written accordingly.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Choosing a manufacturer here comes down to one question: who is still accountable once the commissioning team flies home. Our answer is that we build and programme our own equipment, then stand behind it for the life of the plant.

Own Factory, Real Capacity

Tanks, skids, control panels and membrane housings are built in our own Guangdong facility. Nothing critical is subcontracted, which is why we can commit to delivery dates and hold quality across a batch instead of hoping the shop floor gets it right.

Experience Built the Hard Way

Since the early 2000s we have commissioned plants for food and beverage processors, chemical works, electroplaters, textile mills, mines and municipalities. The lessons that stick are scaling, fouling and sludge handling — those inform every design we issue.

We Engineer the Whole Train

Screening, equalisation, biological or chemical treatment, membranes, evaporation, brine handling — the complete line comes from one organisation. Process design, mechanical, electrical and PLC programming sit under the same roof, so there is no gap for finger-pointing at handover.

After the Handover

Spares for everything we install are held in stock. Remote telemetry is available on most systems, and our service engineers commission, train your operators and turn out for emergencies.

Frequently Asked Questions

What treatment capacity do you normally design for silicon carbide production?

Skid-mounted units cover roughly 14 to 768 m³/day depending on the duty, and parallel trains extend that further. We size against your actual peak hour flow rather than the daily average, because equalisation rarely absorbs the whole spike.

What happens if the incoming silicon carbide production load exceeds the design figure?

Load swings are the most common reason plants underperform. We set the design envelope from your worst-case samples, not your average ones, and specify enough buffer in the biological stage to ride out shocks. If your process genuinely shifts up permanently, we can usually add capacity in stages.

How long does a silicon carbide production system take to deliver?

Standard units ship in about 9 to 13 weeks. Custom trains with neutralisation and metals included run longer — plan for 17 to 25 weeks once detailed engineering starts. Site installation and wet commissioning add another few weeks.

How do you handle sludge from this process?

Sludge handling is where most budgets quietly blow out. We size dewatering against realistic solids production, and we usually recommend a filter press for this duty. The disposal route — landfill, incineration, or a licensed contractor — should be confirmed before commissioning.

Can you work with our existing equipment?

Often yes. We regularly integrate into existing civil structures where the concrete is sound, replacing internals and controls rather than starting over. We will tell you honestly when legacy kit is beyond economic repair.

How much operator attention does the system need day to day?

Automatic control handles dosing, backwash and level control. Realistically your team spends time on chemical top-up, sample testing and sludge handling — maybe one to two hours per shift on silicon carbide production duty, less if you opt for remote monitoring.
