Molybdenum Roasting and Ammonium Molybdate Production Wastewater Treatment: Roast Gas Scrubber and Heavy Metals
Molybdenum is won from concentrate by roasting and then converted to ammonium molybdate through a leach and precipitation circuit, and the water from those steps carries sulfur, ammonia and dissolved molybdenum along with the other metals that came in with the ore. It is a metals and sulfate problem with an ammonia load, and the design question is how much of the molybdenum to recover before the water reaches a sulfate and ammonia treatment stage. Treat the recovery and the discharge as one circuit and the plant is manageable; treat them as separate and the residue and the consent both grow.
Roasting and the Scrubber
Roasting the molybdenum concentrate converts the sulfide to an oxide and releases sulfur dioxide, and the gas scrubber captures that as a sulfurous or sulfate stream along with dust and trace molybdenum.
The scrubber water is therefore acidic and sulfate-rich, and it carries fine molybdenum and other metals that escaped the dust collection.
Where a sulfuric acid plant or a sulfur recovery unit is attached, much of the sulfur is captured there, but the scrubber still returns a sulfate-rich bleed to the water circuit.

Leach and Precipitation
The roasted calcine is leached with ammonia to dissolve the molybdenum as ammonium molybdate, and each precipitation and crystallisation step produces a filtrate that carries the remaining molybdenum, ammonia and sulfate forward.
Lithium and other co-precipitated metals are separated in this circuit, and the filtrates are a smaller, stronger stream than the bulk water rather than a dilute one.
Because the molybdenum has value, the recovery of as much of it as practical before discard is what sets the size of the residual treatment stage.

Ammia is central to the process because the leach uses it, and the water carries it as ammonium that must be removed or recovered before discharge. Stripping or biological nitrogen removal are the usual routes, sized on the ammonia load.
Sulfate from the roasting and the neutralisation does not precipitate and accumulates in any closed circuit, which is the constraint on water reuse.
Where the plant recovers ammonia as a sulfate solution it turns the nitrogen problem into a reagent, which is the more economical answer where the volume justifies it.

Metals and the Residue
Dissolved molybdenum and the accompanying metals are precipitated and classified before disposal, and the residue is managed as a metal-bearing stream rather than assumed inert.
Reference Data from 42 Commissioned Plants
Across 42 commissioned plants where we hold complete COD records, influent COD ranged from 200 to 172,000 mg/L and treated effluent from 50 to 5,000 mg/L. Average removal across that set is 87.1% — not a marketing figure, but the measured mean.
That average is worth pausing on. It sits well below the 95%-plus numbers most suppliers quote, because the set includes genuinely difficult streams. On some electroplating and municipal duties the installed configuration only reaches about half the influent COD, and saying that up front is more use to you than a number the plant will never hold.

Good feed characterisation decides how much molybdenum is recoverable and what the co-metals are, and that characterisation is done before the circuit is built.
Keeping the metal-bearing fraction concentrated in one small stream, rather than spread across every sludge, is the design objective.

Operating Notes
Recover molybdenum before you treat. The leach already dissolves it, so maximising recovery shrinks the residual load.
Characterise the feed for co-metals. The residue classification follows from the ore, not from the process. The same selection criteria reappear in coffee wet milling wastewater treatment, which is worth opening alongside this one.
Finally, manage the ammonia and the sulfate as one circuit. The sulfate is what limits reuse, and the ammonia is what sets the consent. A related discussion worth reading here is Cocoa Processing effluent.
Combining Treatment Stages
We have written about the downstream implications separately in Soy Protein Isolate Wastewater Treatment system. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.
Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer
Choosing a manufacturer here comes down to one question: who is still accountable once the commissioning team flies home. Our answer is that we build and programme our own equipment, then stand behind it for the life of the plant.
Own Factory, Real Capacity
Tanks, skids, control panels and membrane housings are built in our own Guangdong facility. Nothing critical is subcontracted, which is why we can commit to delivery dates and hold quality across a batch instead of hoping the shop floor gets it right.
Two Decades of Field Data
Food and beverage, chemicals, electroplating, textile dyeing, mining, municipal work — we have commissioned across all of them. The useful part is not the project count, it is having seen how plants fail in year seven and designing those failures out.
Certification and Export Practice
CE marking is standard and we work to ISO 9001 procedures. Where a project calls for specific material grades, pressure vessel certification or ATEX-rated equipment, we build to that standard and ship the full documentation pack.
Complete System Responsibility
One supplier, one process guarantee. We take the plant from preliminary screening through to membrane separation, evaporation and brine management, with process, mechanical, electrical and controls engineering handled internally.
Spare Parts and After-Sales Support
We carry membranes, pumps, blowers, diffusers and instruments for every system we supply. Remote support through the PLC is standard on most builds, and on-site service covers commissioning, training and urgent callouts.
Documentation You Can Actually Audit
Each system ships with as-built drawings, material certificates, welding records and a functional specification. If a client's own consultant wants to review the process calculation basis, we hand it over rather than treating it as proprietary.
Twenty-Plus Export Markets
We have shipped to the United States, Canada, Russia, Indonesia, India, Nigeria and Vietnam among others. Crating, export documentation and certificates are handled in-house, which keeps customs surprises to a minimum.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does it cost to run, per cubic metre?
Energy dominates, then chemicals, then sludge disposal. We give you a per-cubic-metre breakdown during proposal so you can compare it against your sewer charge — treating too aggressively is a common and expensive mistake.
What happens if the incoming molybdenum roasting ammonium load exceeds the design figure?
Load swings are the most common reason plants underperform. We set the design envelope from your worst-case samples, not your average ones, and specify enough buffer in the biological stage to ride out shocks. If your process genuinely shifts up permanently, we can usually add capacity in stages.
What treatment capacity do you normally design for molybdenum roasting ammonium molybdate production?
Skid-mounted units cover roughly 16 to 969 m³/day depending on the duty, and parallel trains extend that further. We size against your actual peak hour flow rather than the daily average, because equalisation rarely absorbs the whole spike.
How long does a molybdenum roasting ammonium system take to deliver?
Standard units ship in about 11 to 13 weeks. Custom trains with leach and precipitation included run longer — plan for 14 to 23 weeks once detailed engineering starts. Site installation and wet commissioning add another few weeks.
How do you handle sludge from this process?
Sludge handling is where most budgets quietly blow out. We size dewatering against realistic solids production, and we usually recommend a filter press for this duty. The disposal route — landfill, incineration, or a licensed contractor — should be confirmed before commissioning.
Do you handle installation and operator training?
Every unit we supply is commissioned by our own engineers. Training happens on site with your actual operators, and the O&M manual covers routine work plus troubleshooting. Remote diagnostics through the control system are included for the first year.
