SiC Wafer Manufacturing Wastewater Recycling: Building a Reuse System the Fab Will Trust
Every fab we work with wants to reuse water and most of them have been burned by a reuse system before. The failure is almost never technical in the narrow sense — membranes work, conductivity holds — it is a trust failure. Recycled water that shifts quality once during a production ramp is water the fab will not use again, no matter what the specification says. Building a reuse system that survives contact with a real production schedule means grading the water by where it goes, instrumenting it visibly, and qualifying it the way the fab qualifies anything else that touches the process. We have learned this on the plants where we got it wrong.
Grade the Water by Destination
Not all reuse water needs to be ultrapure. Cooling tower make-up, scrubber feed and general utility water tolerate a specification that RO permeate meets comfortably.
The next grade up — first-pass tool rinse and non-critical wash-down — needs tighter conductivity, silica and TOC control, and usually a polishing step. For the reuse angle specifically, Grain Distillery Spent Wash Treatment goes further than we can here. We set out the wider process route in SiC GaN wafer wastewater treatment.
The top grade, feeding the ultrapure water plant as make-up, is a genuine UPW specification and should be treated as part of that system rather than as an effluent project.

Grading lets you reuse a much larger fraction of the water. Insisting on UPW quality for everything is why some reuse plants recover 40 percent instead of 75.
The Reuse Train
Filtration first: ceramic or polymeric UF on the solids-bearing streams, with coagulation assist where the fines are colloidal. This protects everything downstream and it is where CMP-heavy water is won or lost.
RO is the workhorse, usually two passes for the higher grades. Recovery is set by silica, fluoride and scaling species, which means the pretreatment upstream decides the recovery ceiling here as well.
Where the target grade is UPW make-up, EDI or a polishing mixed bed plus UV for TOC closes the gap. That section belongs in the UPW scope and should be engineered with that team.

Reject from the reuse train still needs a route. In water-scarce sites it feeds evaporation; elsewhere it goes to discharge within the consent. Plan it rather than discovering it.
Stability Is the Design Problem
A reuse system fails on variability, not on average quality. The fab needs to know that the water is the same at 6 a.m. as it was at 6 p.m., through a production ramp and a CIP cycle.
Equalisation ahead of the reuse train smooths the input. Without it, the RO sees the same slugs the discharge plant sees, and permeate quality follows them.
Reference Data from 42 Commissioned Plants
Across 42 commissioned plants where we hold complete COD records, influent COD ranged from 200 to 172,000 mg/L and treated effluent from 50 to 5,000 mg/L. Average removal across that set is 87.1% — not a marketing figure, but the measured mean.
That average is worth pausing on. It sits well below the 95%-plus numbers most suppliers quote, because the set includes genuinely difficult streams. On some electroplating and municipal duties the installed configuration only reaches about half the influent COD, and saying that up front is more use to you than a number the plant will never hold.
| Metric | Measured value |
|---|---|
| Plants with complete COD records | 42 |
| Influent COD range | 200 – 172,000 mg/L |
| Treated COD range | 50 – 5,000 mg/L |
| Average influent COD | 11,914 mg/L |
| Average treated COD | 264 mg/L |
| Average COD removal | 87.1% |
| Wastewater types covered | 30+ |
| Delivery period on record | 2021–2022 |

Online conductivity, TOC and silica at the reuse header, with alarms tied to a defined action, give the fab the confidence to keep using the water. The same selection criteria reappear in Soak, Lime and the Chrome Float, which is worth opening alongside this one.
Automatic diversion on out-of-spec is not optional. A system that silently ships bad water once will not be trusted again for a long time.
Qualification and Handover
Qualify the reuse water with the same rigour the fab applies to any process input: defined sampling points, defined parameters, a documented run period before full acceptance.

Run a parallel period where recycled water is used alongside municipal supply, so any effect on production can be identified without stopping the line.
Document the control philosophy, the alarm set points and the diversion logic, and put it in the plant's quality system. Auditors and EHS teams both ask for it.
Set a review schedule for the first year. Reuse systems settle, and the operating envelope that works at month six is often different from the one that was designed.
Grade the water and size the train per grade. Uniform UPW ambition wastes most of the recoverable volume.

Invest in equalisation and online instrumentation before you invest in more membrane area. Stability is bought, not achieved. We have written about the downstream implications separately in Winery effluent.
Build automatic diversion. One silent excursion costs years of trust. Much of this mirrors the situation set out in Tea Beverage Manufacturing Wastewater Treatment.
Qualify with the process team in the room. Reuse water is a process input, and it should be accepted as one.
Combining Treatment Stages
We have written about the downstream implications separately in Dextrin Production effluent. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.
Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer
Choosing a manufacturer here comes down to one question: who is still accountable once the commissioning team flies home. Our answer is that we build and programme our own equipment, then stand behind it for the life of the plant.
Manufacturing Base in Guangdong
Owned production lines mean we control tolerances, materials and delivery. Standard modular units and bespoke skids are both built by our own people, so schedule commitments are ours to keep.
Two Decades of Field Data
Food and beverage, chemicals, electroplating, textile dyeing, mining, municipal work — we have commissioned across all of them. The useful part is not the project count, it is having seen how plants fail in year seven and designing those failures out.
Twenty-Plus Export Markets
We have shipped to the United States, Canada, Russia, Indonesia, India, Nigeria and Vietnam among others. Crating, export documentation and certificates are handled in-house, which keeps customs surprises to a minimum.
Certification and Export Practice
CE marking is standard and we work to ISO 9001 procedures. Where a project calls for specific material grades, pressure vessel certification or ATEX-rated equipment, we build to that standard and ship the full documentation pack.
We Engineer the Whole Train
Screening, equalisation, biological or chemical treatment, membranes, evaporation, brine handling — the complete line comes from one organisation. Process design, mechanical, electrical and PLC programming sit under the same roof, so there is no gap for finger-pointing at handover.
Documentation You Can Actually Audit
Each system ships with as-built drawings, material certificates, welding records and a functional specification. If a client's own consultant wants to review the process calculation basis, we hand it over rather than treating it as proprietary.
Spares, Service and Commissioning
Membranes, dosing pumps, diffusers, instrumentation and blowers are stocked for the systems we sell. Our control systems support remote diagnostics, and we can put an engineer on site for commissioning, training or an unplanned shutdown.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you work with our existing equipment?
Often yes. We regularly integrate into existing civil structures where the concrete is sound, replacing internals and controls rather than starting over. We will tell you honestly when legacy kit is beyond economic repair.
Can the plant be modified later if our production changes?
Yes, if you tell us about likely expansion up front. Leaving room in the civil works and oversizing the equalisation tank costs far less than retrofitting later. SiC Wafer Manufacturing Wastewater Recycling rarely fails because of bad chemistry — it usually fails because nobody planned for the second production line.
Is SiC wafer wastewater treatment suitable for water reuse?
Usually yes, once the reuse train stage is stable. Reuse normally means adding membrane polishing to bring conductivity and COD down to your process water specification. We would need to see your reuse water limits to size it properly.
How long does a SiC wafer wastewater system take to deliver?
Standard units ship in about 11 to 11 weeks. Custom trains with reuse train included run longer — plan for 14 to 24 weeks once detailed engineering starts. Site installation and wet commissioning add another few weeks.
What happens if the incoming SiC wafer wastewater load exceeds the design figure?
Load swings are the most common reason plants underperform. We set the design envelope from your worst-case samples, not your average ones, and specify enough buffer in the biological stage to ride out shocks. If your process genuinely shifts up permanently, we can usually add capacity in stages.
Do you export and support overseas installations? The operating detail behind this sits in wide bandgap semiconductor wastewater equipment.
We have shipped to the USA, Canada, Indonesia, India, Russia, Vietnam and Nigeria among others. Documentation, crating and export paperwork are handled in-house, and we support commissioning either remotely or with engineers on site.
