Milk Powder Production Wastewater Treatment: Condensate, Wash Water and Lactose
A milk powder plant pasteurises, evaporates and spray-dries milk into powder, then washes the evaporators and dryer between campaigns. The water that leaves is a dairy effluent with an evaporation step attached. Condensate from the evaporators is dilute and warm. Spray-dryer and evaporator wash water carries the milk solids that the campaign left behind. CIP circuits add the hot, caustic slug. The effluent is lactose-rich, warm and stronger than a fresh-milk stream, and the design that works segregates the condensate, recovers the wash solids where a market exists, and treats the lactose as the strong, easy carbon it is.
Where the Water Comes From
Evaporator and dryer condensate carries the volatile fraction and is dilute and warm. It is the volume of the plant and the stream the equalisation tank is sized against.
Spray-dryer and evaporator wash water carries the milk solids the campaign left behind. It is the strongest stream by organic load and it is entirely biodegradable.
CIP circuits add hot, caustic and soapy slugs, and their peaks set the design of the equalisation tank.
Floor and equipment washing adds volume rather than load, and its contribution is the hydraulic design of the whole plant.

Evaporator condensate is the plant's best candidate for reuse in the washing circuit, and the loop is easy to close because that duty accepts water of modest quality. We have written about the downstream implications separately in Vinegar Brewing Wastewater Treatment.
The wash solids are recovered where a market exists for rework or animal feed. A plant that returns them to the process removes most of its load at the source. We have written about the downstream implications separately in Instant Noodle Manufacturing effluent.
The economics decide it. Recovery pays where the plant runs continuously; small lines treat, and they size for the residual wash plus the condensate rather than the average.
Lactose and protein in the wash water are strong, fully biodegradable carbon and nitrogen. A plant that treats powder-plant water as a weak stream will undersize its biology.

Anaerobic treatment suits the segregated strong stream, and the biogas offsets the fuel the evaporators already burn all day. The aerobic stage behind it is sized smaller.
Nitrogen from the protein means some ammonia, and a compact anoxic zone keeps it inside consent. Foam from the protein traces appears in bursts, and a defoamer line is standard.
Heat and Equalisation
Condensate arrives warm, and CIP arrives hot. A mix point that brings the combined stream into the range biology tolerates is not an optional refinement.

The equalisation tank converts the drying and cleaning campaign into a diet the biology can digest. It is sized against the CIP dump, not against the average flow.
Sample the lactose at the equalisation outlet. The average hides the slug, and the biology should never see a slug it was not designed for.
What This Looks Like in Practice
For comparison, our 2021 project in Taishan, Guangdong ran at 5 m³/day with influent COD near 1,000 mg/L and treated water around 50 mg/L. That is 95% removal in practice, not on paper.
| Location | Year | Flow | Feed COD | Treated COD | Removal |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Taishan, Guangdong | 2021 | 5 m³/d | 1,000 mg/L | 50 mg/L | 95% |
Figures are site-measured values from commissioned plants, not modelled estimates.
Biological Treatment
After recovery and equalisation, the remaining load is a strong food effluent, and conventional anaerobic-aerobic treatment handles it once it has been smoothed.
Nitrification is rarely the driver; a modest anoxic zone keeps the nitrogen inside consent. The aerobic basin is sized on the smoothed load, not the peak.

Dewater the biological sludge promptly. Dairy sludge turns acidic and odorous fast, and odour complaints arrive faster than consent breaches.
Operating Notes
Recover the wash solids where you can. Lactose and protein that return to the process are load you never have to treat.
Close the condensate loop where you can. Water that goes back to washing is water you never discharge.
Cool and equalise the CIP. The biology should never see a hot slug or a sugar spike it was not designed for.
Combining Treatment Stages
For the reuse angle specifically, Latex Glove Dipping effluent goes further than we can here. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.
Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer
Choosing a manufacturer here comes down to one question: who is still accountable once the commissioning team flies home. Our answer is that we build and programme our own equipment, then stand behind it for the life of the plant.
In-House Fabrication
Our Guangdong works produces everything from standard modular units to fully bespoke lines. Building in-house keeps cost, schedule and quality under our own control rather than a subcontractor's goodwill.
Experience Built the Hard Way
Since the early 2000s we have commissioned plants for food and beverage processors, chemical works, electroplaters, textile mills, mines and municipalities. The lessons that stick are scaling, fouling and sludge handling — those inform every design we issue.
Complete System Responsibility
One supplier, one process guarantee. We take the plant from preliminary screening through to membrane separation, evaporation and brine management, with process, mechanical, electrical and controls engineering handled internally.
Certification and Export Practice
CE marking is standard and we work to ISO 9001 procedures. Where a project calls for specific material grades, pressure vessel certification or ATEX-rated equipment, we build to that standard and ship the full documentation pack.
Spare Parts and After-Sales Support
We carry membranes, pumps, blowers, diffusers and instruments for every system we supply. Remote support through the PLC is standard on most builds, and on-site service covers commissioning, training and urgent callouts.
Documentation You Can Actually Audit
Each system ships with as-built drawings, material certificates, welding records and a functional specification. If a client's own consultant wants to review the process calculation basis, we hand it over rather than treating it as proprietary.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you export and support overseas installations?
We have shipped to the USA, Canada, Indonesia, India, Russia, Vietnam and Nigeria among others. Documentation, crating and export paperwork are handled in-house, and we support commissioning either remotely or with engineers on site.
What happens if the incoming milk powder production load exceeds the design figure?
Load swings are the most common reason plants underperform. We set the design envelope from your worst-case samples, not your average ones, and specify enough buffer in the biological stage to ride out shocks. If your process genuinely shifts up permanently, we can usually add capacity in stages.
What information do you need to quote?
Water analysis for your worst-case stream, peak and average flows, discharge limits, available footprint and utilities. If you do not have a full analysis yet, we can start from a partial one and flag the gaps.
How do you handle sludge from this process?
Sludge handling is where most budgets quietly blow out. We size dewatering against realistic solids production, and we usually recommend a filter press for this duty. The disposal route — landfill, incineration, or a licensed contractor — should be confirmed before commissioning.
Is milk powder production treatment suitable for water reuse?
Usually yes, once the condensate and recovery stage is stable. Reuse normally means adding membrane polishing to bring conductivity and COD down to your process water specification. We would need to see your reuse water limits to size it properly.
