Gelatin and Collagen Production Wastewater Treatment: Protein, Lime and High BOD

Gelatin and collagen are made by extracting protein from animal hides and bones, and the water from that process is essentially a concentrated protein stream with lime, acid and a lot of smell. It behaves more like slaughterhouse effluent than like a gentle food wash, with very high biodegradable oxygen demand and a putrescible nature that turns sour within a day. The load is strong, the pH swings between the lime and acid steps, and recovery of protein upstream is the only sensible first move.

A Slaughterhouse-Grade Load

Hides and bones carry blood, fat and soluble protein, and the extraction steps release all of it into the water. The biochemical oxygen demand is high and the material degrades fast, so holding time is the enemy.

Lime is used to swell the collagen and acid to neutralise and extract it, so the water swings from strongly alkaline to acidic across the process. Neutralisation has to be managed, not assumed. Much of this mirrors the situation set out in graphite anode material wastewater.

The smell is immediate and strong. Putrescible protein left in a tank for a day becomes a community complaint, so the plant has to move water quickly and turn tanks over.

Fat and grease ride along from the raw material and coat flocs and membranes, so they need early removal like any meat-stream effluent.

Lime and Acid Balance

The alkaline lime step and the acid extraction step produce two very different wastewaters, and mixing them blindly just neutralises one with the other and salts the combined stream. Keeping them separate is cleaner.

Lime adds calcium and raises pH, which on the one hand helps precipitation of protein and on the other hand creates scaling risk downstream if the water is later concentrated.

Recovery of protein as a feed or technical product is worth chasing on large lines, because it removes load before the biological stage and returns value rather than cost.

Neutralisation in a buffered, well-mixed tank gives smoother control than a single dosing point, and on this duty the pH really does swing.

Protein Recovery and Biology

Coagulation pulls soluble protein out of the alkaline stream before biology, and that is the standard first step because it removes the bulk of the BOD cheaply.

At the loads a gelatin plant reaches, anaerobic digestion ahead of aerobic recovers methane and shrinks the aerated basin. The gas offsets a real part of the energy bill.

The aerobic polish removes residual BOD and the nitrogen from the protein fraction. It is smaller than without the anaerobic front end, which is the economic logic.

Sludge is organic, protein-rich and dewaters moderately. Grease and lime in the sludge are the complications that preconditioning addresses.

The stream pulses with batch extraction and clean-in-place, so a mixed, buffered equalisation tank is what lets the biological stage run steady.

Reference Data from 42 Commissioned Plants

Across 42 commissioned plants where we hold complete COD records, influent COD ranged from 200 to 172,000 mg/L and treated effluent from 50 to 5,000 mg/L. Average removal across that set is 87.1% — not a marketing figure, but the measured mean.

That average is worth pausing on. It sits well below the 95%-plus numbers most suppliers quote, because the set includes genuinely difficult streams. On some electroplating and municipal duties the installed configuration only reaches about half the influent COD, and saying that up front is more use to you than a number the plant will never hold.

Because the load is putrescible, short retention and prompt treatment beat a large idle tank. A gelatin plant that lets water sit is a gelatin plant with a smell problem.

Temperature matters. Warm process water arrives warm, and a warm equalisation tank keeps the biology happier through a cold shift. The same selection criteria reappear in Amine Degradation Products, Oily Condensate and Hydrotest Water, which is worth opening alongside this one.

Nutrient balance matters. A high COD-to-nitrogen ratio starves the biomass, and supplementing nitrogen is cheaper than losing efficiency. The process logic sits close to what is described in spirits distillery wastewater treatment, particularly on the pretreatment side.

Operating Notes

Recover protein before treatment. Coagulation upstream is cheaper than a giant biological basin downstream.

Keep the lime and acid streams separate. Mixing them neutralises one with the other and salts the combined water.

Finally, move the water fast. Gelatin effluent putrefies within a day, so short retention beats a big lazy tank.

Combining Treatment Stages

If your site also runs this kind of duty, seaweed processing wastewater treatment covers the cost side of the decision in more depth. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Picking a supplier for this kind of plant is mostly about who carries the risk when something goes wrong. We have built this equipment for more than twenty years, and we are the ones who fabricated it, programmed the controls and will still answer the phone three years from now.

Own Factory, Real Capacity

Tanks, skids, control panels and membrane housings are built in our own Guangdong facility. Nothing critical is subcontracted, which is why we can commit to delivery dates and hold quality across a batch instead of hoping the shop floor gets it right.

Documentation You Can Actually Audit

Each system ships with as-built drawings, material certificates, welding records and a functional specification. If a client's own consultant wants to review the process calculation basis, we hand it over rather than treating it as proprietary.

Certification and Export Practice

CE marking is standard and we work to ISO 9001 procedures. Where a project calls for specific material grades, pressure vessel certification or ATEX-rated equipment, we build to that standard and ship the full documentation pack.

Two Decades of Field Data

Food and beverage, chemicals, electroplating, textile dyeing, mining, municipal work — we have commissioned across all of them. The useful part is not the project count, it is having seen how plants fail in year seven and designing those failures out.

Complete Units and Turnkey Plants

Whether you need a single package unit or a turnkey installation with civil works, we deliver the entire treatment scheme. Our engineering team covers process, mechanical, electrical and automation so one party owns the outcome.

Spare Parts and After-Sales Support

We carry membranes, pumps, blowers, diffusers and instruments for every system we supply. Remote support through the PLC is standard on most builds, and on-site service covers commissioning, training and urgent callouts.

Twenty-Plus Export Markets

We have shipped to the United States, Canada, Russia, Indonesia, India, Nigeria and Vietnam among others. Crating, export documentation and certificates are handled in-house, which keeps customs surprises to a minimum.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which discharge standard will the treated water meet?

We design against whatever consent applies at your boundary — GB 8978, local sewer limits, or a ZLD target with no liquid discharge at all. The design basis is agreed in writing before fabrication, so there is no argument later about what "compliant" meant.

What happens if the incoming gelatin production load exceeds the design figure?

Load swings are the most common reason plants underperform. We set the design envelope from your worst-case samples, not your average ones, and specify enough buffer in the biological stage to ride out shocks. If your process genuinely shifts up permanently, we can usually add capacity in stages.

What information do you need to quote?

Water analysis for your worst-case stream, peak and average flows, discharge limits, available footprint and utilities. If you do not have a full analysis yet, we can start from a partial one and flag the gaps.

How do you handle sludge from this process?

Sludge handling is where most budgets quietly blow out. We size dewatering against realistic solids production, and we usually recommend a filter press for this duty. The disposal route — landfill, incineration, or a licensed contractor — should be confirmed before commissioning.
