Citrus Processing and Juice Wastewater Treatment: Peel Oil, Pectin and High BOD

A citrus plant produces wastewater that smells exactly like the fruit and behaves nothing like a simple food effluent. Peeling, extraction and concentration release peel oil, pectin and fine pulp into the water, and the sugar and organic acid content of the juice itself puts biochemical oxygen demand into the tens of thousands of milligrams per litre. Most of that load is genuinely biodegradable, which is the saving grace, but the volume is large and the composition swings hard between orange, lemon and the seasonal crush. Treat it as a high-strength biodegradable stream with an oil problem on top, not as ordinary municipal sewage.

Where the Load Comes From

Raw fruit arrives clean on the outside and messy on the inside. Washing removes field dirt and pesticide residue, but the real load appears at the peelers and extractors, where oil cells rupture and release d-limonene and the cloud of terpenes that give citrus its smell.

Pressed peel and pulp then go to the finishers and evaporators. The juice itself, and the water used to move it, carries soluble solids — sugars, organic acids, pectin — that are easy for biomass to eat but present in enormous concentration.

Seasonality dominates everything. A plant running flat out for ten weeks of harvest produces far more and far stronger effluent than the same plant idling on import concentrate the rest of the year. Design for the peak, or plan to store and blend.

Keep the wash water separate from the process water where you can. Wash water is dirty but weak; mixing it into the strong stream just multiplies the volume you have to treat expensively.

D-limonene and the other peel oils are not waste in any useful sense — they are a saleable product used in flavours, cleaners and fragrances. Recovering them is usually the first economic decision on the site, not an afterthought.

Recovery is physical. Dissolved air flotation, coalescing separation or steam stripping pull the oil out of the aqueous phase, and the recovered fraction is worth more than the cost of capturing it. Leave it in the water and you pay twice: once in product given away, once in treatment load.

The oil also interferes with biology downstream. Terpenes are inhibitory to biomass at concentration, and an emulsion of oil and solids coats flocs and slows everything. Get it out early and the biological stage behaves. A related discussion worth reading here is Aircraft MRO Facility effluent.

Watch the free phase versus the dissolved phase. Free oil separates readily; dissolved and emulsified terpenes need more aggressive recovery, and that is where plants underperform if they only install a simple skimmer. A related discussion worth reading here is Coal Gasification and Syngas Plant Wastewater Treatment system.

Pectin and Solids

Pectin is the glue that holds plant cell walls together, and in water it is a viscous, filter-clogging nuisance. Fine pulp and pectin together give citrus effluent its characteristic body and its tendency to foul screens and membranes.

Screening and sedimentation remove the coarse pulp. The dissolved pectin is another matter — it passes screens and settles slowly, and it raises the apparent viscosity of the whole stream. A related discussion worth reading here is waste oil re-refining plant wastewater treatment.

Enzymatic or chemical pectin breakdown before biological treatment helps, but the cheaper win is usually solids removal upstream. Every kilogram of pulp kept out of the equalisation tank is a kilogram the biology does not have to handle.

Do not let pulp accumulate in dead zones. Citrus solids acidify and sour quickly, and a tank that stratifies will generate smell and localised anaerobic pockets that upset the whole train.

Measured Results from Plants We Built

We commissioned a 6 m³/day plant for this duty in Wenshui, Shanxi back in 2021. Feed COD came in around 172,000 mg/L and left at 5,000 mg/L — 97.1% removal. The train was hydrolysis acidification + DAF + oil separation + ultrafiltration.

Equalisation Is Not Optional

Citrus effluent varies in strength by the hour. A batch of peel oil recovery, a clean-in-place of the evaporators, a grade change — each swings pH, COD and oil. Biomass fed that variability directly loses stability.

A genuinely sized equalisation tank, mixed and often buffered, is what makes the rest of the plant work. Undersize it and every downstream unit is fighting a moving target.

pH also moves. Citrus streams are acidic from the fruit acids; neutralisation ahead of biology is routine, and doing it in the equalisation tank rather than at a single injection point gives smoother control.

Temperature matters more than people expect. Hot wash water and pasteurisation blowdown arrive warm, and a warm equalisation tank keeps the biology happier through a cold night.

Anaerobic First, Aerobic Second

At the COD levels citrus effluent reaches, sending it straight to aerobic treatment is expensive and wasteful. An anaerobic stage recovers energy as biogas and cuts the oxygen demand the aerated stage has to meet.

Upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactors handle this duty well, and the methane they make can run a boiler or a generator. On a seasonal plant the gas offsets a real part of the energy bill during the crush.

The aerobic polish after anaerobic removes the remaining BOD and the nitrogen that the fruit acids contribute. It is smaller than it would be without the anaerobic front end, and that is the whole point.

Sludge from citrus treatment is high in organics and settles poorly when loaded with fine pulp. Dewatering needs to be specified for that, not for a municipal sludge.

Operating Notes

Recover peel oil before anything else touches the water. Every percentage point left in the stream is product lost and treatment cost added.

Sample by operation, not just at the discharge. Knowing that the Evaporator CIP caused the last pH excursion is what lets you prevent the next one.

Finally, plan the equalisation volume against the harvest peak, not the annual average. A plant sized on average load spends its busiest ten weeks of the year non-compliant, and nobody remembers the quiet months when the consent breach arrives.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Choosing a manufacturer here comes down to one question: who is still accountable once the commissioning team flies home. Our answer is that we build and programme our own equipment, then stand behind it for the life of the plant.

In-House Fabrication

Our Guangdong works produces everything from standard modular units to fully bespoke lines. Building in-house keeps cost, schedule and quality under our own control rather than a subcontractor's goodwill.

Twenty-Plus Export Markets

We have shipped to the United States, Canada, Russia, Indonesia, India, Nigeria and Vietnam among others. Crating, export documentation and certificates are handled in-house, which keeps customs surprises to a minimum.

Certification and Export Practice

CE marking is standard and we work to ISO 9001 procedures. Where a project calls for specific material grades, pressure vessel certification or ATEX-rated equipment, we build to that standard and ship the full documentation pack.

20+ Years Across Dozens of Industries

Experience matters most when your waste stream behaves nothing like the textbook example. We have dealt with toxic organics, heavy metals, extreme salinity and refractory COD in food processing, chemical manufacturing, electroplating, mining and municipal projects.

We Engineer the Whole Train

Screening, equalisation, biological or chemical treatment, membranes, evaporation, brine handling — the complete line comes from one organisation. Process design, mechanical, electrical and PLC programming sit under the same roof, so there is no gap for finger-pointing at handover.

Spares, Service and Commissioning

Membranes, dosing pumps, diffusers, instrumentation and blowers are stocked for the systems we sell. Our control systems support remote diagnostics, and we can put an engineer on site for commissioning, training or an unplanned shutdown.

Documentation You Can Actually Audit

Each system ships with as-built drawings, material certificates, welding records and a functional specification. If a client's own consultant wants to review the process calculation basis, we hand it over rather than treating it as proprietary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is citrus processing treatment suitable for water reuse?

Usually yes, once the peel oil is recoverable stage is stable. Reuse normally means adding membrane polishing to bring conductivity and COD down to your process water specification. We would need to see your reuse water limits to size it properly.

What information do you need to quote?

Water analysis for your worst-case stream, peak and average flows, discharge limits, available footprint and utilities. If you do not have a full analysis yet, we can start from a partial one and flag the gaps.

What does it cost to run, per cubic metre?

Energy dominates, then chemicals, then sludge disposal. We give you a per-cubic-metre breakdown during proposal so you can compare it against your sewer charge — treating too aggressively is a common and expensive mistake.

How do you handle sludge from this process?

Sludge handling is where most budgets quietly blow out. We size dewatering against realistic solids production, and we usually recommend a filter press for this duty. The disposal route — landfill, incineration, or a licensed contractor — should be confirmed before commissioning.

What treatment capacity do you normally design for citrus processing?

Skid-mounted units cover roughly 13 to 591 m³/day depending on the duty, and parallel trains extend that further. We size against your actual peak hour flow rather than the daily average, because equalisation rarely absorbs the whole spike.

Do you handle installation and operator training?

Every unit we supply is commissioned by our own engineers. Training happens on site with your actual operators, and the O&M manual covers routine work plus troubleshooting. Remote diagnostics through the control system are included for the first year.
