Coal Gasification and Syngas Plant Wastewater Treatment: Phenols, Ammonia and Cyanide

Gasification quench and scrubbing water contacts raw syngas directly, and everything volatile or soluble in the gas ends up in it. The result is gasification wastewater — phenolic water — carrying phenols, ammonia, cyanide, thiocyanate, tar and oil at concentrations that make it one of the most difficult high-volume industrial effluents there is. Treatment is a sequence of specific unit operations rather than a single process, and the order of those operations matters more than any individual selection.

What Raw Gasification Water Contains

Phenols run from one to several thousand milligrams per litre depending on gasifier type and coal rank. Ammonia is comparable. Cyanide and thiocyanate add a substantial nitrogen load and acute toxicity. Tar and oil are present as free, dispersed and emulsified phases.

The combination is what makes it hard. Phenols and cyanide are both inhibitory to biomass, ammonia imposes a nitrogen load far beyond normal biological sizing, and oil interferes with every physical separation upstream of the biology.

Concentrations differ enormously between gasifier technologies. Fixed-bed gasifiers produce far more phenolic water than entrained-flow units, and a treatment train designed for one will not suit the other.

Characterise over time before designing. Coal rank changes, gasifier conditions drift, and a design based on one campaign tends to be undersized for the next.

Tar and Oil First

Every downstream step performs worse when oil is present. It fouls extraction equipment, it coats packing in strippers, and it inhibits biomass. Removing it first is not optional.

Free oil separates under gravity with adequate retention. Dispersed oil needs dissolved air flotation. Emulsified oil — and gasification water emulsifies readily — requires chemical treatment, and this is where most plants underperform.

Tar is heavier, stickier and more troublesome than oil. It deposits on surfaces, it interferes with extraction, and it is easier to exclude than to remove. Keeping tar out of the water stream at the source is worth real design effort.

Phenol Recovery by Extraction

Solvent extraction removes phenols from gasification water and recovers them as a saleable product. At the concentrations typical of fixed-bed gasifiers, recovery is economically attractive, not merely an environmental measure.

Extraction also protects the biological stage downstream. Removing the bulk of the phenolic load takes the influent below the inhibition threshold, which is what makes biological treatment viable at all on this duty.

Solvent selection drives performance and losses. Residual solvent in the raffinate adds to the biological load and can itself be inhibitory, so losses matter both economically and operationally.

Where phenol concentrations are low, extraction may not justify itself and biological treatment with adequate equalisation handles the load. The crossover is a costing exercise, not a rule.

Ammonia and Cyanide

Sour water stripping removes ammonia and hydrogen sulphide together, and it is standard on this duty because the concentrations justify it. Stripped ammonia can be recovered, incinerated or returned depending on the site. The same selection criteria reappear in Urea Hydrolysis, Ammonia Recovery and Ammonia Rebound, which is worth opening alongside this one.

What Our Project Data Actually Shows

Across 42 commissioned plants where we hold complete COD records, influent COD ranged from 200 to 172,000 mg/L and treated effluent from 50 to 5,000 mg/L. Average removal across that set is 87.1% — not a marketing figure, but the measured mean.

That average is worth pausing on. It sits well below the 95%-plus numbers most suppliers quote, because the set includes genuinely difficult streams. On some electroplating and municipal duties the installed configuration only reaches about half the influent COD, and saying that up front is more use to you than a number the plant will never hold.

Cyanide requires deliberate destruction before biological treatment. Alkaline chlorination is the conventional route, converting cyanide to cyanate and then to nitrogen and carbonate. It works reliably but consumes chemicals and requires careful pH staging.

Thiocyanate is more persistent than cyanide and often survives treatment that handles cyanide completely. It contributes to both nitrogen and sulphur load and is worth measuring specifically rather than assuming.

Sequence matters. Strip ammonia before biological treatment, destroy cyanide before it too, and remove phenol ahead of both — the biology then receives a stream it can actually process. The same selection criteria reappear in Chrome Chemical Wastewater Treatment system, which is worth opening alongside this one.

Equalise generously. Gasification water composition swings with coal quality and gasifier conditions, and biological stages in particular need steady feed to stay acclimated.

Monitor phenol, cyanide and ammonia individually rather than relying on COD and total nitrogen. The bulk parameters will not tell you which unit operation is failing.

Finally, expect a long commissioning period. Biological treatment acclimated to gasification water takes months to stabilise, and that is normal rather than a sign of problems.

Where This Fits in the Wider Plant

Plants dealing with comparable loads face many of the same trade-offs covered in Activated Carbon Production Wastewater. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Choosing a manufacturer here comes down to one question: who is still accountable once the commissioning team flies home. Our answer is that we build and programme our own equipment, then stand behind it for the life of the plant.

Manufacturing Base in Guangdong

Owned production lines mean we control tolerances, materials and delivery. Standard modular units and bespoke skids are both built by our own people, so schedule commitments are ours to keep.

Experience Built the Hard Way

Since the early 2000s we have commissioned plants for food and beverage processors, chemical works, electroplaters, textile mills, mines and municipalities. The lessons that stick are scaling, fouling and sludge handling — those inform every design we issue.

Certification and Export Practice

CE marking is standard and we work to ISO 9001 procedures. Where a project calls for specific material grades, pressure vessel certification or ATEX-rated equipment, we build to that standard and ship the full documentation pack.

Complete Units and Turnkey Plants

Whether you need a single package unit or a turnkey installation with civil works, we deliver the entire treatment scheme. Our engineering team covers process, mechanical, electrical and automation so one party owns the outcome.

Spares, Service and Commissioning

Membranes, dosing pumps, diffusers, instrumentation and blowers are stocked for the systems we sell. Our control systems support remote diagnostics, and we can put an engineer on site for commissioning, training or an unplanned shutdown.

Documentation You Can Actually Audit

Each system ships with as-built drawings, material certificates, welding records and a functional specification. If a client's own consultant wants to review the process calculation basis, we hand it over rather than treating it as proprietary.

Twenty-Plus Export Markets

We have shipped to the United States, Canada, Russia, Indonesia, India, Nigeria and Vietnam among others. Crating, export documentation and certificates are handled in-house, which keeps customs surprises to a minimum.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you export and support overseas installations?

We have shipped to the USA, Canada, Indonesia, India, Russia, Vietnam and Nigeria among others. Documentation, crating and export paperwork are handled in-house, and we support commissioning either remotely or with engineers on site.

Can you work with our existing equipment?

Often yes. We regularly integrate into existing civil structures where the concrete is sound, replacing internals and controls rather than starting over. We will tell you honestly when legacy kit is beyond economic repair.

What information do you need to quote?

Water analysis for your worst-case stream, peak and average flows, discharge limits, available footprint and utilities. If you do not have a full analysis yet, we can start from a partial one and flag the gaps.

How much operator attention does the system need day to day?

Automatic control handles dosing, backwash and level control. Realistically your team spends time on chemical top-up, sample testing and sludge handling — maybe one to two hours per shift on coal gasification syngas duty, less if you opt for remote monitoring.
