Pectin Production Wastewater Treatment: Citrus and Apple Peel, Acid and High COD
Pectin is extracted from citrus peel or apple pomace with hot dilute acid, and the extraction and washing steps produce an acidic, high-strength wastewater carrying soluble pectin and the sugars of the fruit. The water is strong in organic load and low in pH, and because pectin is a gel-forming polysaccharide, it complicates both biology and dewatering. Treat it as a strong, acidic, biodegradable stream with a recovery step up front and a pH balance on top.
An Acidic Fruit Stream
Extraction with hot dilute acid pulls the pectin out of the peel, and the spent extract after the product is the main waste. It carries soluble pectin, fruit sugar and the acid used.
The water is acidic from the extraction. Neutralising is needed, and the alkalinity demand is part of the balance, not an afterthought. We have written about the downstream implications separately in Kaolin and Clay Washing Wastewater Treatment.
Strength is high. Pectin liquor is a strong organic stream, and the dissolved pectin resists simple settling, so biology or coagulation has to deal with it.

Peel wash and pomace press water are weaker but steady, and they carry fine solids that screen poorly, so getting them out early protects the downstream units.
The Pectin Complication
Soluble pectin gels. At the wrong pH or concentration it thickens and fouls screens, pipes and dewatering, so the stream has to be kept moving and balanced.
Coagulation with a cheap inorganic salt pulls much of the pectin and the fine solids out before biology, and that is the standard first move on this duty.

Because pectin is biodegradable, biology is the right finish once the pH and the gel risk are managed. The job is to feed the reactor a steady, balanced stream.
Fruit sugar in the water is soluble carbon that ordinary screening cannot remove, so it rides through to the biology, which is where it belongs.
Recovery and Biology
Where volumes justify it, recovering pectin or the peel solids as a low-grade product turns a disposal cost into value, and it is the pattern on the better-run plants.

At the loads a pectin plant reaches, anaerobic digestion ahead of aerobic recovers energy as biogas and shrinks the aerated stage. The gas offsets a real part of the plant energy bill.
Aerobic polishing after anaerobic removes residual BOD and the nitrogen the peel contributes, and it is smaller than it would be without the anaerobic front end.
Sludge from pectin treatment is organic, gummy and dewaters poorly, so dewatering needs conditioning and the right equipment.
Reference Data from 42 Commissioned Plants
Across 42 commissioned plants where we hold complete COD records, influent COD ranged from 200 to 172,000 mg/L and treated effluent from 50 to 5,000 mg/L. Average removal across that set is 87.1% — not a marketing figure, but the measured mean.
That average is worth pausing on. It sits well below the 95%-plus numbers most suppliers quote, because the set includes genuinely difficult streams. On some electroplating and municipal duties the installed configuration only reaches about half the influent COD, and saying that up front is more use to you than a number the plant will never hold.

Operating Notes
Neutralise and coagulate before biology. On pectin duty the gel risk and the acid decide the pre-treatment, so they are designed in. Where several streams need joint treatment, borax and boron mining wastewater treatment is the more detailed reference.
Recover peel solids where volumes justify it. The water problem shrinks when the product is taken out first.
Finally, keep the stream moving. Pectin liquor gels and sours if it sits, so short retention and prompt treatment beat a large idle tank.
Integrated Treatment Strategies
Much of this mirrors the situation set out in Olive Mill effluent. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.
Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer
Two decades in this industry teaches you that most treatment problems are procurement problems in disguise. Someone bought the cheapest skid, nobody checked the equalisation volume, and eighteen months on the plant cannot hold its consent limit. We build differently.
Own Factory, Real Capacity
Tanks, skids, control panels and membrane housings are built in our own Guangdong facility. Nothing critical is subcontracted, which is why we can commit to delivery dates and hold quality across a batch instead of hoping the shop floor gets it right.
20+ Years Across Dozens of Industries
Experience matters most when your waste stream behaves nothing like the textbook example. We have dealt with toxic organics, heavy metals, extreme salinity and refractory COD in food processing, chemical manufacturing, electroplating, mining and municipal projects.
Complete Units and Turnkey Plants
Whether you need a single package unit or a turnkey installation with civil works, we deliver the entire treatment scheme. Our engineering team covers process, mechanical, electrical and automation so one party owns the outcome.
Certification and Export Practice
CE marking is standard and we work to ISO 9001 procedures. Where a project calls for specific material grades, pressure vessel certification or ATEX-rated equipment, we build to that standard and ship the full documentation pack.
Twenty-Plus Export Markets
We have shipped to the United States, Canada, Russia, Indonesia, India, Nigeria and Vietnam among others. Crating, export documentation and certificates are handled in-house, which keeps customs surprises to a minimum.
Spare Parts and After-Sales Support
We carry membranes, pumps, blowers, diffusers and instruments for every system we supply. Remote support through the PLC is standard on most builds, and on-site service covers commissioning, training and urgent callouts.
Documentation You Can Actually Audit
Each system ships with as-built drawings, material certificates, welding records and a functional specification. If a client's own consultant wants to review the process calculation basis, we hand it over rather than treating it as proprietary.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you handle sludge from this process?
Sludge handling is where most budgets quietly blow out. We size dewatering against realistic solids production, and we usually recommend a filter press for this duty. The disposal route — landfill, incineration, or a licensed contractor — should be confirmed before commissioning.
How long does a pectin production system take to deliver?
Standard units ship in about 11 to 11 weeks. Custom trains with pectin complication included run longer — plan for 14 to 25 weeks once detailed engineering starts. Site installation and wet commissioning add another few weeks.
What spare parts should we hold on site?
Critical spares are pumps, dosing valves, instrumentation sensors and any specialty media. We ship a recommended spares kit with the plant and hold stock for everything we supply, so lead times on replacements stay short.
Do you export and support overseas installations?
We have shipped to the USA, Canada, Indonesia, India, Russia, Vietnam and Nigeria among others. Documentation, crating and export paperwork are handled in-house, and we support commissioning either remotely or with engineers on site.
Can the plant be modified later if our production changes?
Yes, if you tell us about likely expansion up front. Leaving room in the civil works and oversizing the equalisation tank costs far less than retrofitting later. Pectin Production Wastewater Treatment rarely fails because of bad chemistry — it usually fails because nobody planned for the second production line.
