Aluminium Anodizing Wastewater Treatment: Rinse Water, Dissolved Aluminium and Phosphate

An anodizing line moves a part through cleaning, etching, anodizing, colouring and sealing, and each tank carries a different chemistry into the rinse water. The etch is caustic and dissolves aluminium, the anodizing bath is sulfuric acid, the colouring step may carry tin or a dye, and the seal may carry nickel. The rinse water is therefore a moderate-volume stream with a metal content and a wide pH swing. Because the aluminium is dissolved rather than suspended, it is removed by precipitation, and the precipitation chemistry is the whole treatment.

A Line of Different Chemistries

Caustic etching dissolves a fraction of the aluminium surface deliberately, and the dissolved aluminium leaves the etch tank as an aluminate in a strongly alkaline solution.

The anodizing bath is sulfuric acid at a controlled concentration, and drag-out from it makes the rinse water acidic.

Colouring may use an electrolytic tin or nickel salt, or an organic dye, and either one leaves a residue in the rinse. If your site also runs this kind of duty, Sludge Treatment Reject Water covers the cost side of the decision in more depth.

Sealing closes the oxide pores, traditionally in a nickel acetate solution, and that is where the nickel in the effluent comes from.

treatment plant on site

Because the rinse water pH swings between the alkaline drag-out and the acidic drag-out, the first unit is usually an equalisation tank rather than a treatment step.

Precipitating the Aluminium

Dissolved aluminium is removed by raising the pH into the range where aluminium hydroxide precipitates, and the operating window is narrow because aluminium redissolves at high pH.

Neutralising the alkaline etch with the acidic rinse is the cheapest form of pH control, and counter-current rinsing reduces both the water use and the load.

settling tank detail

Aluminium hydroxide sludge is bulky and holds a lot of water, so thickening and dewatering are a real cost item rather than a formality. Much of this mirrors the situation set out in Potash Mining and Refining Wastewater Treatment system.

A coagulant aid improves the settleability of the hydroxide and is usually worth the dose given the sludge volumes involved.

Reference Data from Our Own Projects

For comparison, our 2022 project in Xingtai, Hebei ran at 100 m³/day with influent COD near 2,300 mg/L and treated water around 216 mg/L. That is 90.6% removal in practice, not on paper.

Nickel and the Seal

Nickel from a nickel acetate seal is present at low concentration but is the metal that usually sets the consent.

It is removed by precipitation as a hydroxide, but at the concentration a rinse carries, a dedicated treatment stage or a selective resin is often needed rather than relying on co-precipitation. For the reuse angle specifically, Lithium Brine Extraction and Refining effluent goes further than we can here.

process equipment overview

Nickel-free sealing chemistries remove the problem at source, and where a consent is tight that substitution is cheaper than the treatment. Much of this mirrors the situation set out in Nitro Compounds, Red Water and Sulphate.

Rinsing is the largest water user on the line, and counter-current rinse arrangements cut the consumption substantially for a small capital cost.

Where a plant recovers rinse water by membrane, the sulfate from the anodizing bath is the limiting constituent rather than the metals. Much of this mirrors the situation set out in Silicone and Siloxane Manufacturing effluent.

installed skid unit

Recovering the etch bath by membrane or by crystallisation extends its life and removes a spent-bath disposal that would otherwise be a periodic load spike.

Operating Notes

Equalise before treating. The pH swing between etch drag-out and acid drag-out is wider than any single treatment stage handles well.

Control the precipitation pH tightly. Aluminium hydroxide redissolves above its window and the metal reappears in the effluent.

Finally, reduce rinse water before treating rinse water. Counter-current rinsing is the cheapest unit on the line.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Two decades in this industry teaches you that most treatment problems are procurement problems in disguise. Someone bought the cheapest skid, nobody checked the equalisation volume, and eighteen months on the plant cannot hold its consent limit. We build differently.

In-House Fabrication

Our Guangdong works produces everything from standard modular units to fully bespoke lines. Building in-house keeps cost, schedule and quality under our own control rather than a subcontractor's goodwill.

Certification and Export Practice

CE marking is standard and we work to ISO 9001 procedures. Where a project calls for specific material grades, pressure vessel certification or ATEX-rated equipment, we build to that standard and ship the full documentation pack.

20+ Years Across Dozens of Industries

Experience matters most when your waste stream behaves nothing like the textbook example. We have dealt with toxic organics, heavy metals, extreme salinity and refractory COD in food processing, chemical manufacturing, electroplating, mining and municipal projects.

Twenty-Plus Export Markets

We have shipped to the United States, Canada, Russia, Indonesia, India, Nigeria and Vietnam among others. Crating, export documentation and certificates are handled in-house, which keeps customs surprises to a minimum.

Complete System Responsibility

One supplier, one process guarantee. We take the plant from preliminary screening through to membrane separation, evaporation and brine management, with process, mechanical, electrical and controls engineering handled internally.

Documentation You Can Actually Audit

Each system ships with as-built drawings, material certificates, welding records and a functional specification. If a client's own consultant wants to review the process calculation basis, we hand it over rather than treating it as proprietary.

After the Handover

Spares for everything we install are held in stock. Remote telemetry is available on most systems, and our service engineers commission, train your operators and turn out for emergencies.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much operator attention does the system need day to day?

Automatic control handles dosing, backwash and level control. Realistically your team spends time on chemical top-up, sample testing and sludge handling — maybe one to two hours per shift on aluminium anodizing duty, less if you opt for remote monitoring.

How long does a aluminium anodizing system take to deliver?

Standard units ship in about 10 to 10 weeks. Custom trains with precipitating the aluminium included run longer — plan for 16 to 24 weeks once detailed engineering starts. Site installation and wet commissioning add another few weeks.

Which discharge standard will the treated water meet?

We design against whatever consent applies at your boundary — GB 8978, local sewer limits, or a ZLD target with no liquid discharge at all. The design basis is agreed in writing before fabrication, so there is no argument later about what "compliant" meant.

Do you handle installation and operator training?

Every unit we supply is commissioned by our own engineers. Training happens on site with your actual operators, and the O&M manual covers routine work plus troubleshooting. Remote diagnostics through the control system are included for the first year.

What spare parts should we hold on site?

Critical spares are pumps, dosing valves, instrumentation sensors and any specialty media. We ship a recommended spares kit with the plant and hold stock for everything we supply, so lead times on replacements stay short.
