Lithium Brine Extraction and Refining Wastewater Treatment: TDS, Reagents and Return Brine

Lithium production from continental brine operates at the extreme end of water treatment. Feed brine runs tens of thousands of milligrams per litre of total dissolved solids, extraction uses reagents that must not reach the environment, and the deposits are typically in the driest places on earth. Water is simultaneously the product carrier, the scarce resource and the environmental liability, which makes this a water balance problem before it is a treatment one.

Nothing Conventional Works at This Salinity

Evaporation pond brine has passed well beyond the point where biological treatment, standard precipitation chemistry or ordinary membrane operation are viable. Osmotic pressures are high, scaling potential is severe, and reagent behaviour differs from anything seen at freshwater dilutions.

So the treatment train is built differently. Evaporation, selective precipitation, adsorption and — where justified — membrane concentration or crystallisation. There is no biological stage and no conventional clarifier doing familiar duty.

Design for the whole deposit life rather than start-up conditions. Feed brine chemistry shifts as the resource is drawn down, usually toward lower grade and higher impurity ratios, and a plant sized on early production often struggles years later.

Spent Brine Is the Volume Problem

After lithium is removed, the residual brine — depleted in lithium but higher in everything else because solar evaporation removed water — has to go somewhere. Volumes are large relative to product output, and they are hypersaline.

Reinjection into the aquifer is the dominant management route where geology permits. It preserves the water balance and keeps the fluid where it came from, but requires careful characterisation of the receiving formation and sustained monitoring, because injection behaviour changes over time. The process logic sits close to what is described in Oily Bilge, Grit Blast and Antifouling, particularly on the pretreatment side.

Where reinjection is not viable, evaporation ponds are the fallback, though they consume enormous land and take years to reach steady state.Leakage detection and liner integrity are the operating priorities, since failure is usually discovered long after it begins.

Whichever route, the key design question is a water balance across decades. Small annual imbalances become enormous volumes over a twenty-year project life.

Reagents and Residual Chemistry

Where solvent extraction is used, entrained and dissolved organic loss into the aqueous phase is unavoidable to some degree. Recovery and recycle is both economic — reagents are expensive — and environmental, since several are persistent and toxic to aquatic life. The same selection criteria reappear in waste-to-energy incineration plant wastewater, which is worth opening alongside this one.

Adsorption with activated carbon or polymeric resin handles dissolved losses; coalescing or adequate residence handles entrainment. Install both, because they address different mechanisms and either alone leaves a substantial residual.

Boron and magnesium removal generate large volumes of precipitate or spent adsorbent. Neither is inert, and disposal classification depends on the specific rejection characteristics of the deposit rather than on anything generic. Where several streams need joint treatment, Commercial Car Wash and Fleet Truck Wash Wastewater Treatment is the more detailed reference.

Reference Data from Our Own Projects

One reference point: a 10 m³/day installation we delivered in Fuyang, Anhui (2022) was treating feed at roughly 17,938 mg/L COD and holding discharge near 150 mg/L, about 99.2% removal. The train was Fenton + UASB anaerobic + denitrification + contact oxidation + MBR.

Figures are site-measured values from commissioned plants, not modelled estimates.

Track reagent inventory against losses, not just against purchases.Unexplained consumption is usually going somewhere, and finding out where is easier than explaining it later to a regulator.

Engineering for Arid Remote Sites

Most lithium operations sit far from infrastructure, at altitude, with limited power and no local skilled labour pool. Equipment selection should weight reliability and simplicity above nominal efficiency — a slightly less efficient unit that runs for years beats an optimised one that needs specialist attention quarterly. Where several streams need joint treatment, Emulsion Breaking, Formaldehyde and Residual Monomer Control is the more detailed reference.

Scaling and salt deposition affect every surface in contact with brine. Specify for access and cleaning, because anything that cannot be cleaned in place will eventually be cleaned manually, at altitude, in difficult conditions.

Plan for water scarcity in the plant design itself, not just as an environmental constraint. Freshwater for reagent make-up and washing is expensive where it exists at all, and using saliner water where chemistry permits frees fresh supplies for where it does not.

Integrated Treatment Strategies

A related discussion worth reading here is High Sulfate, Ammonia and Mother Liquor. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Choosing a manufacturer here comes down to one question: who is still accountable once the commissioning team flies home. Our answer is that we build and programme our own equipment, then stand behind it for the life of the plant.

In-House Fabrication

Our Guangdong works produces everything from standard modular units to fully bespoke lines. Building in-house keeps cost, schedule and quality under our own control rather than a subcontractor's goodwill.

20+ Years Across Dozens of Industries

Experience matters most when your waste stream behaves nothing like the textbook example. We have dealt with toxic organics, heavy metals, extreme salinity and refractory COD in food processing, chemical manufacturing, electroplating, mining and municipal projects.

Complete Units and Turnkey Plants

Whether you need a single package unit or a turnkey installation with civil works, we deliver the entire treatment scheme. Our engineering team covers process, mechanical, electrical and automation so one party owns the outcome.

Spares, Service and Commissioning

Membranes, dosing pumps, diffusers, instrumentation and blowers are stocked for the systems we sell. Our control systems support remote diagnostics, and we can put an engineer on site for commissioning, training or an unplanned shutdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which discharge standard will the treated water meet?

We design against whatever consent applies at your boundary — GB 8978, local sewer limits, or a ZLD target with no liquid discharge at all. The design basis is agreed in writing before fabrication, so there is no argument later about what "compliant" meant.

What happens if the incoming lithium brine extraction load exceeds the design figure?

Load swings are the most common reason plants underperform. We set the design envelope from your worst-case samples, not your average ones, and specify enough buffer in the biological stage to ride out shocks. If your process genuinely shifts up permanently, we can usually add capacity in stages.

Do you export and support overseas installations?

We have shipped to the USA, Canada, Indonesia, India, Russia, Vietnam and Nigeria among others. Documentation, crating and export paperwork are handled in-house, and we support commissioning either remotely or with engineers on site.

What treatment capacity do you normally design for lithium brine extraction?

Skid-mounted units cover roughly 20 to 840 m³/day depending on the duty, and parallel trains extend that further. We size against your actual peak hour flow rather than the daily average, because equalisation rarely absorbs the whole spike.

What does it cost to run, per cubic metre?

Energy dominates, then chemicals, then sludge disposal. We give you a per-cubic-metre breakdown during proposal so you can compare it against your sewer charge — treating too aggressively is a common and expensive mistake.

Is lithium brine extraction treatment suitable for water reuse?

Usually yes, once the spent brine is the volume problem stage is stable. Reuse normally means adding membrane polishing to bring conductivity and COD down to your process water specification. We would need to see your reuse water limits to size it properly.
