Aircraft MRO Facility Wastewater Treatment: Paint Stripping, Degreasers and Chrome
An aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul facility generates a wide range of small, chemically unrelated streams from a single hangar floor. Paint stripping produces phenolic or methylene chloride residues. Engine and component washing produces alkaline degreasers and solvent emulsions. Corrosion protection work produces hexavalent chromium. Fire system testing produces fluorinated foam. Almost every one of them is a compliance problem in its own right, and the treatment approach is segregation rather than anything clever at the end of the pipe.
Segregate or Pay Continuously
The instinct is to collect everything in one drainage system and treat the mixture. On an MRO site that produces a stream containing solvents, heavy metals, fluoride surfactants and strong alkali simultaneously, which is harder to treat than any of them alone and generates mixed hazardous sludge.
Segregation costs floor drainage and discipline rather than equipment. Dedicated collection for chrome-bearing streams, solvent-bearing streams and general wash water lets each be treated by the method that actually works for it.
The payoff is sludge classification. Mixed MRO sludge is hazardous almost by default; segregated streams frequently produce one hazardous fraction and one that is not, which changes disposal cost by an order of magnitude.
Plan drainage during hangar design rather than retrofitting. Retrofitting floor drainage in an operating hangar is expensive enough that it usually does not happen.
Paint Stripping Residues
Chemical paint stripping uses methylene chloride with phenol, or increasingly benzyl alcohol and other less hazardous formulations. Either way the rinse water carries solvent, dissolved paint solids and the stripper chemistry itself.
Methylene chloride is volatile and dense. It sinks, it partitions to the bottom of vessels, and it requires treatment as a dense non-aqueous phase rather than as ordinary oily water. Standard oil separators do not handle it.
Stripping is appropriate for methylene chloride, and carbon adsorption for the less volatile alternatives. Wherever possible, shift to less hazardous stripper formulations — the treatment saving is usually larger than the product cost difference. The same selection criteria reappear in E-Waste and WEEE Recycling Wastewater Treatment, which is worth opening alongside this one.
Paint solids are removed physically. Stripped paint fragments and primer residues do not degrade and will pass through any biological stage unchanged.

Hexavalent Chromium
Chromate conversion coatings and primer systems still containing hexavalent chromium are used on aerospace alloys because nothing else matches their corrosion performance. Rinse water carries it, and the discharge limit is low because hexavalent chromium is both toxic and carcinogenic.
Treatment is reduction followed by precipitation. Reduce chromium(VI) to chromium(III) with metabisulphite or ferrous sulphate at acid pH, then neutralise to precipitate chromium hydroxide. It is well-established chemistry and it works reliably when pH and redox are controlled.
Control matters more than chemistry. Incomplete reduction leaves hexavalent chromium in solution at any pH, and plants meeting total chromium limits can still breach on the hexavalent speciation.Never assume total chromium compliance implies hexavalent compliance.
Monitor oxidation-reduction potential as well as pH. A reading that looks fine on pH can still indicate incomplete reduction, and ORP is the parameter that actually tells you.
Component washing uses alkaline cleaners, solvent degreasers or aqueous systems depending on the component and the soil. Spent baths are alkaline, oily and carry heavy metals dissolved from the components being cleaned.
Reference Data from Our Own Projects
For comparison, our 2021 project in Wenshui, Shanxi ran at 6 m³/day with influent COD near 172,000 mg/L and treated water around 5,000 mg/L. That is 97.1% removal in practice, not on paper. The train was hydrolysis acidification + DAF + oil separation + ultrafiltration.
| Location | Year | Flow | Feed COD | Treated COD | Removal |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wenshui, Shanxi | 2021 | 6 m³/d | 172,000 mg/L | 5,000 mg/L | 97.1% |
Figures are site-measured values from commissioned plants, not modelled estimates.
Because aluminium and other amphoteric metals dissolve in strong alkali, spent alkaline cleaner can carry substantial dissolved metal. Neutralising to the precipitation window captures it, at the cost of hydroxide sludge volume.
Solvent degreasers produce emulsions or free phase depending on formulation. Free phase separates; emulsions need chemical splitting. Where solvents are used, recovery by distillation usually pays and removes the largest load from the water entirely.

Keep vapour degreaser condensate and contact water separate from aqueous cleaning waste. They are small volumes with very different treatment routes.
Fire System Testing and PFAS
Hangar fire suppression systems are tested periodically, and where fluorinated foams were historically used, the test discharge carries PFAS. Legacy contamination of drainage systems and soils is now a significant liability at many facilities.
PFAS are not treated by conventional methods. They do not biodegrade, they do not precipitate, and conventional carbon adsorption works for the longer-chain compounds while performing poorly for short-chain ones.
Source control is the effective measure. Transitioning to fluorine-free foam eliminates future loading; dealing with legacy contamination in drainage and soil is a separate, slower and more expensive problem.
Characterise the drainage system before assuming there is no issue.Facilities that used fluorinated foam for decades commonly find contamination in places nobody was monitoring.
Keep a written inventory of every chemical used on the hangar floor and where it drains. This is the document that makes segregation possible and it is rarely maintained, which is why segregation fails.
Sample by activity rather than only at the final discharge. Knowing which operation produced an excursion is what allows it to be fixed rather than absorbed.
Finally, design for intermittent high-strength events. MRO work is campaign-based, and a heavy maintenance check produces weeks of concentrated waste in a few days. The same selection criteria reappear in Bottled Water Plant effluent, which is worth opening alongside this one.
Combining Treatment Stages
A related discussion worth reading here is Caustic, Glue and Fines. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.
Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer
Choosing a manufacturer here comes down to one question: who is still accountable once the commissioning team flies home. Our answer is that we build and programme our own equipment, then stand behind it for the life of the plant.
Own Factory, Real Capacity
Tanks, skids, control panels and membrane housings are built in our own Guangdong facility. Nothing critical is subcontracted, which is why we can commit to delivery dates and hold quality across a batch instead of hoping the shop floor gets it right.
Certification and Export Practice
CE marking is standard and we work to ISO 9001 procedures. Where a project calls for specific material grades, pressure vessel certification or ATEX-rated equipment, we build to that standard and ship the full documentation pack.
20+ Years Across Dozens of Industries
Experience matters most when your waste stream behaves nothing like the textbook example. We have dealt with toxic organics, heavy metals, extreme salinity and refractory COD in food processing, chemical manufacturing, electroplating, mining and municipal projects.
Twenty-Plus Export Markets
We have shipped to the United States, Canada, Russia, Indonesia, India, Nigeria and Vietnam among others. Crating, export documentation and certificates are handled in-house, which keeps customs surprises to a minimum.
We Engineer the Whole Train
Screening, equalisation, biological or chemical treatment, membranes, evaporation, brine handling — the complete line comes from one organisation. Process design, mechanical, electrical and PLC programming sit under the same roof, so there is no gap for finger-pointing at handover.
Spares, Service and Commissioning
Membranes, dosing pumps, diffusers, instrumentation and blowers are stocked for the systems we sell. Our control systems support remote diagnostics, and we can put an engineer on site for commissioning, training or an unplanned shutdown.
Documentation You Can Actually Audit
Each system ships with as-built drawings, material certificates, welding records and a functional specification. If a client's own consultant wants to review the process calculation basis, we hand it over rather than treating it as proprietary.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the plant be modified later if our production changes?
Yes, if you tell us about likely expansion up front. Leaving room in the civil works and oversizing the equalisation tank costs far less than retrofitting later. Aircraft MRO Facility Wastewater Treatment rarely fails because of bad chemistry — it usually fails because nobody planned for the second production line.
What happens if the incoming aircraft maintenance MRO load exceeds the design figure?
Load swings are the most common reason plants underperform. We set the design envelope from your worst-case samples, not your average ones, and specify enough buffer in the biological stage to ride out shocks. If your process genuinely shifts up permanently, we can usually add capacity in stages.
Is aircraft maintenance MRO treatment suitable for water reuse?
Usually yes, once the paint stripping residues stage is stable. Reuse normally means adding membrane polishing to bring conductivity and COD down to your process water specification. We would need to see your reuse water limits to size it properly.
Which discharge standard will the treated water meet?
We design against whatever consent applies at your boundary — GB 8978, local sewer limits, or a ZLD target with no liquid discharge at all. The design basis is agreed in writing before fabrication, so there is no argument later about what "compliant" meant.
