Wind Turbine Blade Manufacturing Wastewater Treatment: Resin, Dust and Solvent Wash Water
Blade factories laminate glass fibre with epoxy and polyester resins, gelcoat the moulds, grind and sand the cured surfaces, and clean tools with solvents. The wastewater from all of that is unusual: mostly dilute, occasionally very strong, and full of materials that do not dissolve. Resin wash water carries emulsified epoxy and hardener residues. Grinding water carries glass dust that behaves like an abrasive slurry. Solvent rinses arrive as separate batch streams that must never reach the biological stage. The treatment approach that works is physical first and chemical second, with biology reserved for the water that has earned its place there.
The Streams Are Unusual
Mould and roller wash water carries uncured resin, and uncured resin is liquid until the water's salts or the plant's chemicals turn it into something solid. Where that solidification happens in a tank, it is treatment. Where it happens in a pump, it is maintenance.
Cutting and grinding stations in the wet sections produce water loaded with glass fibre dust and cured composite fines. The dust is sharp, it settles fast and it wears anything that moves. Where several streams need joint treatment, MDI and TDI Polyurethane Precursor Production effluent is the more detailed reference.
Gelcoat and paint booth water brings pigments and solvents in small but chemically active volumes.

The strongest stream by far is the batch wash at mould release, when accumulated resin is stripped at once. These dumps are episodic and they set the design.
Never Mix the Solvents
Acetone and solvent rinses are collected separately, full stop. They are either reused as cleaning solvent after simple settling, or sent off site as a waste, or distilled on site where volumes justify it.
A solvent slug reaching an aerobic basin strips biomass and, at the right concentration, is a fire risk in confined headspace. The collection system keeps them out by design, with dedicated sumps and dedicated tankage. Where several streams need joint treatment, Granite and Marble Stone Cutting effluent is the more detailed reference.

Plants that rely on dilution to make solvents safe are relying on the day nothing goes wrong. The practice is cheap until it is very expensive.
Solids and Resin Removal
Settling and lamella separators catch the glass dust and composite fines. The sludge is abrasive, and the handling equipment is hardened accordingly, or the handling equipment is replaced often, which is the same decision made twice. Much of this mirrors the situation set out in Roast Gas Scrubber and Heavy Metals.
Emulsified resin and colloid-sized particles are removed by coagulation and flotation or by chemical precipitation. The floc here is unlike food-industry floc: it is denser, it does not float easily, and dosing is tuned on jar tests with the real water.
Reference Data from Our Own Projects
One reference point: a 5 m³/day installation we delivered in Taishan, Guangdong (2021) was treating feed at roughly 1,000 mg/L COD and holding discharge near 50 mg/L, about 95% removal.
| Location | Year | Flow | Feed COD | Treated COD | Removal |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Taishan, Guangdong | 2021 | 5 m³/d | 1,000 mg/L | 50 mg/L | 95% |
Figures are site-measured values from commissioned plants, not modelled estimates.
Filtration, usually sand or multimedia, follows as a guard against carryover, because the biology downstream is not equipped to handle a slug of resin floc.

Biology and Carbon Limits
The biodegradable fraction of this effluent is modest once resins and solvents are removed, and the aerobic stage is correspondingly small. Some plants need none at all, running chemical treatment and filtration to consent.
Where biology is installed, the design check is on the episodic dumps rather than the average. Equalisation of the wash water over a week, rather than a day, smooths the resin chemistry enough for stable operation.
Ammonia is rarely a driver. Nitrogen shows up in amine hardeners in small amounts, and the ordinary aeration volume handles it as a background matter.

Reuse and Housekeeping
Grinding water recirculates well. A clarifier and a filter keep the loop closed for the cutting stations, and the only bleed is the salt and dust accumulation that filtration removes. Much of this mirrors the situation set out in Lysine Amino Acid Fermentation effluent.
Wash water reuse for floor washing is the next easiest loop, and it reduces the treated discharge by the volume reused.
Housekeeping decides more here than chemistry. Dry sweeping before washdown, covered solvent cans and disciplined drain use are worth more than any unit process on the plan.
Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer
Two decades in this industry teaches you that most treatment problems are procurement problems in disguise. Someone bought the cheapest skid, nobody checked the equalisation volume, and eighteen months on the plant cannot hold its consent limit. We build differently.
In-House Fabrication
Our Guangdong works produces everything from standard modular units to fully bespoke lines. Building in-house keeps cost, schedule and quality under our own control rather than a subcontractor's goodwill.
Two Decades of Field Data
Food and beverage, chemicals, electroplating, textile dyeing, mining, municipal work — we have commissioned across all of them. The useful part is not the project count, it is having seen how plants fail in year seven and designing those failures out.
Certification and Export Practice
CE marking is standard and we work to ISO 9001 procedures. Where a project calls for specific material grades, pressure vessel certification or ATEX-rated equipment, we build to that standard and ship the full documentation pack.
Documentation You Can Actually Audit
Each system ships with as-built drawings, material certificates, welding records and a functional specification. If a client's own consultant wants to review the process calculation basis, we hand it over rather than treating it as proprietary.
Complete System Responsibility
One supplier, one process guarantee. We take the plant from preliminary screening through to membrane separation, evaporation and brine management, with process, mechanical, electrical and controls engineering handled internally.
After the Handover
Spares for everything we install are held in stock. Remote telemetry is available on most systems, and our service engineers commission, train your operators and turn out for emergencies.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you export and support overseas installations?
We have shipped to the USA, Canada, Indonesia, India, Russia, Vietnam and Nigeria among others. Documentation, crating and export paperwork are handled in-house, and we support commissioning either remotely or with engineers on site.
Do you handle installation and operator training?
Every unit we supply is commissioned by our own engineers. Training happens on site with your actual operators, and the O&M manual covers routine work plus troubleshooting. Remote diagnostics through the control system are included for the first year.
What does it cost to run, per cubic metre?
Energy dominates, then chemicals, then sludge disposal. We give you a per-cubic-metre breakdown during proposal so you can compare it against your sewer charge — treating too aggressively is a common and expensive mistake.
What information do you need to quote?
Water analysis for your worst-case stream, peak and average flows, discharge limits, available footprint and utilities. If you do not have a full analysis yet, we can start from a partial one and flag the gaps.
