Biogas Plant Digestate Liquor Treatment: Ammonia Stripping, Dewatering and Return Water

Anaerobic digestion destroys volatile solids and converts organic nitrogen into ammonia. That is the point of the process, and it is also why the reject water returning from digestate dewatering carries several hundred to well over a thousand milligrams per litre of ammonia nitrogen. When that stream goes back to the head of the plant, it can account for a tenth or more of the incoming nitrogen load while contributing almost no flow. It is the classic return-load trap, and it is also a genuine resource recovery opportunity.

Where the Ammonia Comes From

Feedstock protein and urea are converted through hydrolysis and fermentation into ammonium. Because digestion operates in a closed reactor with no nitrification, virtually all of it stays as ammonia rather than being oxidised further.

Concentration in the digester reflects feedstock composition. Food waste and slaughterhouse material produce considerably higher ammonia than energy crops or manure alone.Mixed feedstock plants often see ammonia rise when they add a high-protein co-substrate without anticipating the return load it creates.

The reject water itself is only part of the picture. Dewatering efficiency determines how much water returns and how concentrated it is, and a dewatering step performing poorly multiplies the return load even when concentration is unchanged.

Get Dewatering Right First

Everything downstream depends on how well solids separation works. Digestate dewatering is notoriously polymer-hungry, and the particular digestion conditions strongly influence demand —plants that have run at high ammonia levels for years frequently find dosing costs creeping upward without an obvious cause.

Test polymers against live digestate, not against a sample that has sat for days. Digestate ages quickly, and results from stale samples rarely reproduce on plant. A related discussion worth reading here is electrolytic manganese wastewater treatment.

Screen — centrifuge or screw press — at the target dry solids your downstream route actually needs. Higher dry solids costs more polymer but reduces both the volume returning to the head of works and the transport cost of the fibre fraction. If your site also runs this kind of duty, Acid Purification, Fluoride and Graphitisation Furnace Gas covers the cost side of the decision in more depth.

Then measure the centrate rather than assuming it. The chemistry of return water is specific enough, and variable enough, that design from textbook figures reliably misleads.

Removal Rates Across Our Installed Base

Across 42 commissioned plants where we hold complete COD records, influent COD ranged from 200 to 172,000 mg/L and treated effluent from 50 to 5,000 mg/L. Average removal across that set is 87.1% — not a marketing figure, but the measured mean.

That average is worth pausing on. It sits well below the 95%-plus numbers most suppliers quote, because the set includes genuinely difficult streams. On some electroplating and municipal duties the installed configuration only reaches about half the influent COD, and saying that up front is more use to you than a number the plant will never hold.

Ammonia Stripping and Recovery

Steam or air stripping removes ammonia as free gas at elevated pH. Adjusting reject water to around pH ten to eleven converts ammonium to ammonia, and packed towers or stripping columns then transfer it to the gas phase.

Recovery changes the economics substantially. A closed loop with acid scrubbing produces ammonium sulphate solution, which is a saleable fertiliser product. Whether it pays depends on local fertiliser prices and plant scale, but even where it does not, stripping removes nitrogen from the return loop and that has operational value. The same selection criteria reappear in LNG Terminal Wastewater Treatment system, which is worth opening alongside this one.

Scaling is the operating headache. Raising pH precipitates calcium and magnesium carbonates, which coat packing and heat exchange surfaces. Regular acid cleaning is part of normal operation, not remedial work. Much of this mirrors the situation set out in Spirits Distillery effluent.

There are also biological sidestream options — nitritation-denitritation and anammox based processes — which require less energy than stripping and no chemical pH adjustment. They suit larger plants with steady return flows and skilled operators, and they are sensitive to temperature swings.

Closing the Loop

Every kilo of ammonia removed from the reject stream is a kilo that does not return to the head of works. Plants that install sidestream treatment frequently discover headroom they did not think they had, sometimes deferring a main plant upgrade entirely. For the reuse angle specifically, Seaweed Processing Wastewater Treatment goes further than we can here.

Phosphorus accumulates in the same loop and precipitates as struvite wherever turbulence, high pH and magnesium coincide — pipework, pump casings, centrifuge internals. Occasionally that blockage is deliberate recovery; usually it is unplanned maintenance.

Consider the whole plant water balance before choosing anything. Sometimes the most economical solution is reducing the water returning at all, rather than treating it more intensively once it does.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Picking a supplier for this kind of plant is mostly about who carries the risk when something goes wrong. We have built this equipment for more than twenty years, and we are the ones who fabricated it, programmed the controls and will still answer the phone three years from now.

In-House Fabrication

Our Guangdong works produces everything from standard modular units to fully bespoke lines. Building in-house keeps cost, schedule and quality under our own control rather than a subcontractor's goodwill.

Experience Built the Hard Way

Since the early 2000s we have commissioned plants for food and beverage processors, chemical works, electroplaters, textile mills, mines and municipalities. The lessons that stick are scaling, fouling and sludge handling — those inform every design we issue.

Twenty-Plus Export Markets

We have shipped to the United States, Canada, Russia, Indonesia, India, Nigeria and Vietnam among others. Crating, export documentation and certificates are handled in-house, which keeps customs surprises to a minimum.

Complete System Responsibility

One supplier, one process guarantee. We take the plant from preliminary screening through to membrane separation, evaporation and brine management, with process, mechanical, electrical and controls engineering handled internally.

After the Handover

Spares for everything we install are held in stock. Remote telemetry is available on most systems, and our service engineers commission, train your operators and turn out for emergencies.

Certification and Export Practice

CE marking is standard and we work to ISO 9001 procedures. Where a project calls for specific material grades, pressure vessel certification or ATEX-rated equipment, we build to that standard and ship the full documentation pack.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you export and support overseas installations?

We have shipped to the USA, Canada, Indonesia, India, Russia, Vietnam and Nigeria among others. Documentation, crating and export paperwork are handled in-house, and we support commissioning either remotely or with engineers on site.

What happens if the incoming biogas plant digestate load exceeds the design figure?

Load swings are the most common reason plants underperform. We set the design envelope from your worst-case samples, not your average ones, and specify enough buffer in the biological stage to ride out shocks. If your process genuinely shifts up permanently, we can usually add capacity in stages.

What treatment capacity do you normally design for biogas plant digestate liquor treatment?

Skid-mounted units cover roughly 13 to 987 m³/day depending on the duty, and parallel trains extend that further. We size against your actual peak hour flow rather than the daily average, because equalisation rarely absorbs the whole spike.
