Gluconic Acid Wastewater Treatment: Fermentation Broth, Calcium Sulfate and the Gypsum Problem

Gluconic acid is made by fermenting glucose with Aspergillus to build gluconic acid, usually neutralised to sodium or calcium gluconate along the way. The wastewater is the spent fermentation broth plus the precipitation steps, and its defining headache is calcium: the process often uses lime or calcium carbonate, and that leaves calcium sulfate — gypsum — suspended throughout the stream. So you get a high-COD, high-solids liquor where the biology is easy but the solids handling and the scaling are not. The plant has to be built around the gypsum as much as the carbon.

Where the Water Comes From

Fermentation broth is the base load. After the gluconic acid is recovered the spent broth still holds sugars, cells and soluble organics, and it sets the COD envelope.

Calcium precipitation is the distinctive step. Where the acid is neutralised with lime, calcium gluconate and calcium sulfate form, and that gypsum stays suspended in the liquor.

Filtration and washing of the precipitated solids add the rest. They are the streams most plants try to recover value from first, because the solids are the real problem.

treatment plant on site

Cooling and boiler water stay separate by design. Mixing them in only dilutes the gypsum at the cost of a much bigger treatment volume.

The Gypsum Load

Calcium sulfate is what makes this stream different. It is fine, it does not settle fast, and it scales pipes and heat exchangers if the plant is not built to shed it.

Settling and filtration remove most of it at the source. A clarifier sized for fine solids, followed by filtration, keeps the gypsum out of the biology where it would otherwise pack the sludge.

Scaling is the silent failure. A plant that ignores the calcium builds a treatment train that fouls within a season and spends the next years chipping deposits off the internals.

Solids and the Broth

Spent cells are the biological solids. They settle poorly and keep respiring, so they are pulled early by sedimentation before the biology sees them.

Removal Rates Across Our Installed Base

Across 42 commissioned plants where we hold complete COD records, influent COD ranged from 200 to 172,000 mg/L and treated effluent from 50 to 5,000 mg/L. Average removal across that set is 87.1% — not a marketing figure, but the measured mean.

That average is worth pausing on. It sits well below the 95%-plus numbers most suppliers quote, because the set includes genuinely difficult streams. On some electroplating and municipal duties the installed configuration only reaches about half the influent COD, and saying that up front is more use to you than a number the plant will never hold.

The recovered precipitate has limited value but removing it early is the win. Less gypsum in the stream means less scaling downstream and a smaller sludge handling bill.

Recovered organics can be fed back. Some plants recover carbon or sell the spent biomass, which is both a COD cut and a small credit against the treatment cost.

Biology After the Solids

Once the gypsum is out the remaining liquor is a clean glucose stream. Anaerobic digestion takes it and returns biogas, and the aerobic polish behind handles residual BOD.

Equalisation has to hold the batch rhythm. Fermentation arrives in waves, and a tank sized on the peak keeps the nitrifiers and digesters from being shocked. Plants dealing with comparable loads face many of the same trade-offs covered in Fish Meal Plant effluent.

The salt tolerance matters where sodium gluconate is the product. Higher sodium pushes the design toward a salt-tolerant culture or toward concentrating the mother liquor.

installed skid unit

Engineer for the gypsum, not just the COD. Calcium sulfate scales everything it touches, and the plant has to shed it or it fouls within a season. We have written about the downstream implications separately in Fly Ash Beneficiation effluent.

Settle and filter the precipitate at the source. Keeping gypsum out of the biology is what protects the sludge and the pipes.

Separate the clean water. Every litre of cooling or boiler water kept out of the stream is a litre you do not have to de-gypsum later. Much of this mirrors the situation set out in MBBR effluent.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Picking a supplier for this kind of plant is mostly about who carries the risk when something goes wrong. We have built this equipment for more than twenty years, and we are the ones who fabricated it, programmed the controls and will still answer the phone three years from now.

Manufacturing Base in Guangdong

Owned production lines mean we control tolerances, materials and delivery. Standard modular units and bespoke skids are both built by our own people, so schedule commitments are ours to keep.

Experience Built the Hard Way

Since the early 2000s we have commissioned plants for food and beverage processors, chemical works, electroplaters, textile mills, mines and municipalities. The lessons that stick are scaling, fouling and sludge handling — those inform every design we issue.

We Engineer the Whole Train

Screening, equalisation, biological or chemical treatment, membranes, evaporation, brine handling — the complete line comes from one organisation. Process design, mechanical, electrical and PLC programming sit under the same roof, so there is no gap for finger-pointing at handover.

Spare Parts and After-Sales Support

We carry membranes, pumps, blowers, diffusers and instruments for every system we supply. Remote support through the PLC is standard on most builds, and on-site service covers commissioning, training and urgent callouts.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you handle sludge from this process?

Sludge handling is where most budgets quietly blow out. We size dewatering against realistic solids production, and we usually recommend a filter press for this duty. The disposal route — landfill, incineration, or a licensed contractor — should be confirmed before commissioning.

Do you handle installation and operator training?

Every unit we supply is commissioned by our own engineers. Training happens on site with your actual operators, and the O&M manual covers routine work plus troubleshooting. Remote diagnostics through the control system are included for the first year.

Can the plant be modified later if our production changes?

Yes, if you tell us about likely expansion up front. Leaving room in the civil works and oversizing the equalisation tank costs far less than retrofitting later. Gluconic Acid Wastewater Treatment rarely fails because of bad chemistry — it usually fails because nobody planned for the second production line.

What does it cost to run, per cubic metre?

Energy dominates, then chemicals, then sludge disposal. We give you a per-cubic-metre breakdown during proposal so you can compare it against your sewer charge — treating too aggressively is a common and expensive mistake.
