Chewing Gum Manufacturing Wastewater Treatment: Gum Base, Sugar and the Cooling Slug

A chewing gum plant melts and mixes gum base with sweeteners and flavour, extrudes and scores the slabs, coats them and cools them on a belt, then washes the lines between flavours. The water it sends out is a confectionery effluent defined by two things: base and sugar. Extruder and line wash water carries the base and the sugar that never set. Coating and cooling water adds the heavier organic load. Hot wash arrives soapy in slugs. The effluent is sticky, warm and stronger in organic load than most plants expect, and the design that works screens the solids, breaks the emulsion chemically, and treats the sugar and the base as a strong, biodegradable carbon rather than a nuisance.

Where the Load Comes From

Extruder and line wash water carries the gum base and the sugar that never set. It is the main stream and the one that gives the treatment plant its character.

Coating and cooling water adds the heavier organic load, warm and slow to separate when fresh.

Hot wash and pan cleaning arrives soapy in slugs. It is the stream the equalisation tank is sized against. Much of this mirrors the situation set out in Spunbond Wash, Binder and Finish Traces.

Floor and equipment washing adds volume rather than load, and its contribution is the hydraulic design of the whole plant.

Base and Solids

Free gum base and sugar are intercepted at the drain with a screen and a grease trap. The skimmed base is collected where the volume justifies it.

Emulsified base survives the interceptor. Coagulation and dissolved-air flotation break it, lifting the base and the fine solids together in one step.

The failure mode is housekeeping. A line drain that bypasses its trap during a flavour changeover sends an hour of neat base into a plant sized for traces.

Reference Data from Our Own Projects

We commissioned a 60 m³/day plant for this duty in Foshan, Guangdong back in 2021. Feed COD came in around 2,000 mg/L and left at 90 mg/L — 95.5% removal.

A second unit of the same class, delivered in Hong'an, Hubei during 2021, ran 150 m³/day at 1,961 mg/L feed COD down to 200 mg/L.

process equipment overview

Sugar Is a Real Load

Dissolved sugar in the effluent is not a nuisance; it is a strong, fully biodegradable carbon source that will undersize a biological stage if treated as weak.

Anaerobic treatment suits the strongest segregated streams. Some plants run a contact reactor on line-wash water alone, and the biogas offsets the fuel the extruders already burn all day.

installed skid unit

The aerobic stage behind it is sized modestly, because the load after digestion is small. What it must handle reliably is the coating-line rhythm, and the equalisation tank is what smooths it.

Operating Notes

Recover the base at the drain, not at the treatment plant. The trap is cheap there and the flotation unit is expensive here.

control panel and piping

Break the emulsion chemically. Biology does not eat gum base, and emulsion that survives to the outfall is a consent question.

Size the biology on the sugar, not on the average. Gum water is stronger than it looks. The same selection criteria reappear in Arc Fusion Wash, Acid Leaching and Silica Fines, which is worth opening alongside this one.

Where This Fits in the Wider Plant

The process logic sits close to what is described in Sodium-Ion Battery Manufacturing Wastewater Treatment, particularly on the pretreatment side. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Choosing a manufacturer here comes down to one question: who is still accountable once the commissioning team flies home. Our answer is that we build and programme our own equipment, then stand behind it for the life of the plant.

Own Factory, Real Capacity

Tanks, skids, control panels and membrane housings are built in our own Guangdong facility. Nothing critical is subcontracted, which is why we can commit to delivery dates and hold quality across a batch instead of hoping the shop floor gets it right.

Certification and Export Practice

CE marking is standard and we work to ISO 9001 procedures. Where a project calls for specific material grades, pressure vessel certification or ATEX-rated equipment, we build to that standard and ship the full documentation pack.

Two Decades of Field Data

Food and beverage, chemicals, electroplating, textile dyeing, mining, municipal work — we have commissioned across all of them. The useful part is not the project count, it is having seen how plants fail in year seven and designing those failures out.

Documentation You Can Actually Audit

Each system ships with as-built drawings, material certificates, welding records and a functional specification. If a client's own consultant wants to review the process calculation basis, we hand it over rather than treating it as proprietary.

Complete Units and Turnkey Plants

Whether you need a single package unit or a turnkey installation with civil works, we deliver the entire treatment scheme. Our engineering team covers process, mechanical, electrical and automation so one party owns the outcome.

After the Handover

Spares for everything we install are held in stock. Remote telemetry is available on most systems, and our service engineers commission, train your operators and turn out for emergencies.

Getting Started

Send us a water analysis and your production profile and we will tell you honestly what the process should look like and roughly what it costs to build and run. Reach our engineering team on WhatsApp: +86 13631765076 or via hkbhp.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which discharge standard will the treated water meet?

We design against whatever consent applies at your boundary — GB 8978, local sewer limits, or a ZLD target with no liquid discharge at all. The design basis is agreed in writing before fabrication, so there is no argument later about what "compliant" meant.

How long does a chewing gum manufacturing system take to deliver?

Standard units ship in about 8 to 12 weeks. Custom trains with base and solids included run longer — plan for 17 to 25 weeks once detailed engineering starts. Site installation and wet commissioning add another few weeks.

Can the plant be modified later if our production changes?

Yes, if you tell us about likely expansion up front. Leaving room in the civil works and oversizing the equalisation tank costs far less than retrofitting later. Chewing Gum Manufacturing Wastewater Treatment rarely fails because of bad chemistry — it usually fails because nobody planned for the second production line.

What spare parts should we hold on site?

Critical spares are pumps, dosing valves, instrumentation sensors and any specialty media. We ship a recommended spares kit with the plant and hold stock for everything we supply, so lead times on replacements stay short.

How much operator attention does the system need day to day?

Automatic control handles dosing, backwash and level control. Realistically your team spends time on chemical top-up, sample testing and sludge handling — maybe one to two hours per shift on chewing gum manufacturing duty, less if you opt for remote monitoring.

Is chewing gum manufacturing treatment suitable for water reuse?

Usually yes, once the base and solids stage is stable. Reuse normally means adding membrane polishing to bring conductivity and COD down to your process water specification. We would need to see your reuse water limits to size it properly.
