I. Technical Challenges of Zero Discharge of Chemical Industry Wastewater 


Chemical wastewater usually has the following characteristics and is extremely difficult to treat: 

The water quality is complex: it contains a variety of toxic and harmful, and difficult-to-degrade organic substances (high COD) as well as heavy metals. 

High salt content: The TDS content is high, which imposes a great burden on the biochemical treatment and membrane system.

Given the particularity of chemical wastewater, Baohupu Environmental Protection adopts a combined process of "pre-treatment + membrane concentration + evaporation crystallization", and conducts personalized design: 


Strengthen the pre-treatment system 

Based on the characteristics of the wastewater, processes such as "advanced oxidation (such as Fenton, ozone catalytic oxidation), micro-electrolysis, and coagulation sedimentation" are adopted to effectively remove COD, toxic substances and improve the biodegradability of the wastewater, thereby reducing the load on the subsequent treatment units. 


2. Biological treatment system (if necessary) 

For wastewater containing biodegradable organic matter, the improved anaerobic (UASB, IC) and aerobic (MBR, MBBR) processes were adopted to efficiently and stably remove the organic substances. 


3. Membrane cascade concentration system 

The membrane technology combination of "ultrafiltration (UF) + nanofiltration (NF) + reverse osmosis (RO) / + disc tube reverse osmosis (DTRO)" is adopted. NF can separate monovalent and divalent salts, while RO and DTRO perform high-concentration treatment, maximizing water resource recovery, reducing evaporation, and saving operating costs. 


4. Evaporation and Crystallization System 

The core adopts MVR mechanical vapor recompression evaporators or multi-effect evaporators to conduct final treatment of the membrane concentration liquid. Combined with the desalination crystallization technology, the salt content in the wastewater is converted into valuable resources (such as sodium sulfate, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, etc.), achieving the reduction and resource utilization of miscellaneous salts and truly achieving zero liquid discharge and solid waste resource utilization.
