Spodumene Lithium Concentrate Processing Wastewater Treatment: Flotation, Acid Leach and Reagent Carryover

Spodumene is mined, crushed, floated and sometimes acid-roasted to make lithium concentrate, and the water that leaves is a mining effluent with a chemical plant attached. The crushing and flotation circuits produce a tailings stream loaded with fine rock, mica and flotation reagents. The conversion step, where the concentrate is roasted and leached with sulfuric acid, produces a neutralisation slurry rich in gypsum and dissolved metals. The two streams behave differently and they are best kept apart, and the design that works puts a thickener early, treats the acid leach water as a chemical stream rather than a mining one, and sizes the water recovery against the dust suppression demand.

Two Streams, Two Behaviours

The crushing and flotation circuit produces a tailings slurry of fine rock and mica, carrying the flotation reagents that made the separation work. It is a solids problem with a chemistry tail.

The conversion plant produces the chemical stream: acid leach water, neutralisation slurry and wash water, rich in gypsum, sulfate and dissolved metals from the concentrate.

Dust suppression and road washing add volume rather than load, and their contribution is the hydraulic design of the whole plant. Where several streams need joint treatment, Malt House Wastewater Treatment system is the more detailed reference.

Storm runoff from the stockpiles is episodic and it is the stream that surprises the design in the first wet season.

A thickener on the tailings stream recovers most of the water and returns it to the flotation circuit, which is where the real saving is: water that returns is water that never becomes an effluent.

The underflow is a stable slurry that stacks, and the supernatant is clean enough for reuse. The recovery rate decides the size of everything downstream.

settling tank detail

The reagent carryover in the returned water is watched, because flotation reagents that accumulate in the recycle loop change the separation they were bought to perform. If your site also runs this kind of duty, Spent Substrate and Wash Water covers the cost side of the decision in more depth.

The Acid Leach Stream

Neutralisation of the leach water with lime produces a gypsum slurry and a water rich in dissolved metals. Precipitation at controlled pH brings the metals down to consent levels, and the operating discipline is keeping that pH where the chemistry works. The process logic sits close to what is described in Sugar Beet Processing effluent, particularly on the pretreatment side.

The gypsum slurry is thickened and disposed of or sold, and the decision is local. The water after clarification is the plant's best candidate for reuse in dust suppression and road washing.

Where the water recovery target is high, a membrane step polishes the clarified water, and the concentrate from that step returns to the neutralisation circuit rather than becoming a new problem.

Reference Data from Our Own Projects

One reference point: a 10 m³/day installation we delivered in Fuyang, Anhui (2022) was treating feed at roughly 17,938 mg/L COD and holding discharge near 150 mg/L, about 99.2% removal. The train was Fenton + UASB anaerobic + denitrification + contact oxidation + MBR.

Water Balance and Reuse

The whole plant is designed around a water balance rather than around a discharge consent. Every litre returned to the circuit is a litre not discharged and not drawn from the bore field.

Dust suppression is the largest reuse duty, and it accepts water of a quality that no other process would. The loop is easy to close and the saving is immediate.

The discharge, where it still exists, is the final polishing step: clarified, pH-corrected and monitored, and its quality is a report card on the upstream recovery rather than a design target of its own.

Operating Notes

Return the thickener water. The recovery rate is the single number that decides the size of the treatment plant.

Treat the leach water as a chemical stream. It is not a mining effluent with a high pH; it is a metal-laden neutralisation slurry.

Watch the reagent accumulation in the recycle loop. Flotation reagents that quietly build up change the separation they were bought to perform. For the reuse angle specifically, cassava and tapioca starch processing wastewater treatment goes further than we can here.

Where This Fits in the Wider Plant

Plants dealing with comparable loads face many of the same trade-offs covered in Heads, Peel and Brine. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Choosing a manufacturer here comes down to one question: who is still accountable once the commissioning team flies home. Our answer is that we build and programme our own equipment, then stand behind it for the life of the plant.

Own Factory, Real Capacity

Tanks, skids, control panels and membrane housings are built in our own Guangdong facility. Nothing critical is subcontracted, which is why we can commit to delivery dates and hold quality across a batch instead of hoping the shop floor gets it right.

Twenty-Plus Export Markets

We have shipped to the United States, Canada, Russia, Indonesia, India, Nigeria and Vietnam among others. Crating, export documentation and certificates are handled in-house, which keeps customs surprises to a minimum.

Two Decades of Field Data

Food and beverage, chemicals, electroplating, textile dyeing, mining, municipal work — we have commissioned across all of them. The useful part is not the project count, it is having seen how plants fail in year seven and designing those failures out.

Complete System Responsibility

One supplier, one process guarantee. We take the plant from preliminary screening through to membrane separation, evaporation and brine management, with process, mechanical, electrical and controls engineering handled internally.

Spare Parts and After-Sales Support

We carry membranes, pumps, blowers, diffusers and instruments for every system we supply. Remote support through the PLC is standard on most builds, and on-site service covers commissioning, training and urgent callouts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if the incoming spodumene lithium processing load exceeds the design figure?

Load swings are the most common reason plants underperform. We set the design envelope from your worst-case samples, not your average ones, and specify enough buffer in the biological stage to ride out shocks. If your process genuinely shifts up permanently, we can usually add capacity in stages.

What treatment capacity do you normally design for spodumene lithium processing?

Skid-mounted units cover roughly 32 to 1070 m³/day depending on the duty, and parallel trains extend that further. We size against your actual peak hour flow rather than the daily average, because equalisation rarely absorbs the whole spike.

Is spodumene lithium processing treatment suitable for water reuse?

Usually yes, once the thickener first stage is stable. Reuse normally means adding membrane polishing to bring conductivity and COD down to your process water specification. We would need to see your reuse water limits to size it properly.

Can the plant be modified later if our production changes?

Yes, if you tell us about likely expansion up front. Leaving room in the civil works and oversizing the equalisation tank costs far less than retrofitting later. Spodumene Lithium Concentrate Processing Wastewater Treatment rarely fails because of bad chemistry — it usually fails because nobody planned for the second production line.
