Bentonite Processing Wastewater Treatment: Clay Slurry, Sodium Activation and Water Reuse
Bentonite processing mines, dries, mills and activates a clay that swells on contact with water, and the plant's water circuits inherit that behaviour. Washing and classification water carries colloidal clay that never settles on its own. Sodium activation, where soda ash is mixed with the clay to upgrade its swelling properties, sends a saline alkaline liquor to the drains. Dust scrubbers on the dryers add another dilute clay stream. The suspended solids are the volume problem, the activation salts are the chemistry problem, and neither is difficult once the design accepts that clay water is thickened, not settled.
Colloidal Clay Will Not Settle
Bentonite is prized for staying suspended, and the wastewater shows it. Raw overflow from classifiers and thickeners stays cloudy for weeks in a tank, which makes plain gravity settling a poor investment at almost any footprint.
Coagulation changes the picture. A modest dose of a suitable coagulant neutralises the clay's surface charge, and the suspension collapses into a floc that settles in minutes.
The floc is clay, and clay dewaters into a cake that goes back to the mill or to low-grade product. Very little of the caught solids is a true waste, which softens the economics considerably.

Activation Liquors
Sodium activation with soda ash produces an alkaline, moderately saline water when the wet process is used. Its volume is small and its chemistry is stable, so it is equalised and metered into treatment rather than dumped.
The alkalinity is useful in coagulation, up to a point. pH correction before the coagulant dose keeps the chemistry in its working window rather than fighting it. If your site also runs this kind of duty, Pectin Production Wastewater Treatment system covers the cost side of the decision in more depth.
Where the plant runs the dry activation route, this stream disappears and the water problem is purely solids, which is the simpler half of the business.

Thickeners, not clarifiers, are the right machine for clay water. They are designed to handle high solids feed and to produce an underflow that pumps, and the overflow, after coagulation, is clean enough to return to washing and scrubbing. Much of this mirrors the situation set out in vegetable oil refinery wastewater treatment.
The reuse loop is natural here. Classifier wash water and scrubber water tolerate residual fines, so a large share of the treated water goes straight back to the front of the plant.
The loop's limit is the salt from activation and from the ore itself. A salt balance over the circuit sets how much can be recirculated before quality drifts, and that balance is measured, not assumed. Where several streams need joint treatment, Dye Manufacturing Wastewater Treatment system is the more detailed reference.
What Our Project Data Actually Shows
Across 42 commissioned plants where we hold complete COD records, influent COD ranged from 200 to 172,000 mg/L and treated effluent from 50 to 5,000 mg/L. Average removal across that set is 87.1% — not a marketing figure, but the measured mean.
That average is worth pausing on. It sits well below the 95%-plus numbers most suppliers quote, because the set includes genuinely difficult streams. On some electroplating and municipal duties the installed configuration only reaches about half the influent COD, and saying that up front is more use to you than a number the plant will never hold.

Dust Scrubbing Water
Dryer and mill scrubbers produce the most dilute stream, and it is the easiest to close. Fine clay is the only load, and the thickener takes it back without ceremony.
Evaporation in hot climates makes scrubber water a net consumer rather than a discharge, which some plants use deliberately. For the reuse angle specifically, Bioethanol Distillery Wastewater Treatment goes further than we can here.
Where a discharge remains, it is the thickener overflow after coagulation and a polishing filter, and it consents easily once the colloids are gone.

Operating Notes
Buy a thickener, not a bigger settling pond. Clay water does not reward patience, it rewards chemistry.
Return the floc to the mill. Bentonite cake is nearly always worth more on the belt than in the lagoon.
Keep the activation liquor metered and the salt balance honest. The reuse loop is decided by salt, not by equipment. The same selection criteria reappear in Retting Water, Pectin and High BOD, which is worth opening alongside this one.
Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer
Picking a supplier for this kind of plant is mostly about who carries the risk when something goes wrong. We have built this equipment for more than twenty years, and we are the ones who fabricated it, programmed the controls and will still answer the phone three years from now.
Manufacturing Base in Guangdong
Owned production lines mean we control tolerances, materials and delivery. Standard modular units and bespoke skids are both built by our own people, so schedule commitments are ours to keep.
20+ Years Across Dozens of Industries
Experience matters most when your waste stream behaves nothing like the textbook example. We have dealt with toxic organics, heavy metals, extreme salinity and refractory COD in food processing, chemical manufacturing, electroplating, mining and municipal projects.
Twenty-Plus Export Markets
We have shipped to the United States, Canada, Russia, Indonesia, India, Nigeria and Vietnam among others. Crating, export documentation and certificates are handled in-house, which keeps customs surprises to a minimum.
Complete Units and Turnkey Plants
Whether you need a single package unit or a turnkey installation with civil works, we deliver the entire treatment scheme. Our engineering team covers process, mechanical, electrical and automation so one party owns the outcome.
After the Handover
Spares for everything we install are held in stock. Remote telemetry is available on most systems, and our service engineers commission, train your operators and turn out for emergencies.
Certification and Export Practice
CE marking is standard and we work to ISO 9001 procedures. Where a project calls for specific material grades, pressure vessel certification or ATEX-rated equipment, we build to that standard and ship the full documentation pack.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you handle installation and operator training?
Every unit we supply is commissioned by our own engineers. Training happens on site with your actual operators, and the O&M manual covers routine work plus troubleshooting. Remote diagnostics through the control system are included for the first year.
What does it cost to run, per cubic metre?
Energy dominates, then chemicals, then sludge disposal. We give you a per-cubic-metre breakdown during proposal so you can compare it against your sewer charge — treating too aggressively is a common and expensive mistake.
How much operator attention does the system need day to day?
Automatic control handles dosing, backwash and level control. Realistically your team spends time on chemical top-up, sample testing and sludge handling — maybe one to two hours per shift on bentonite processing duty, less if you opt for remote monitoring.
