Battery Separator Production Wastewater Treatment: Extrusion Solvent, Stretching Wash and Porosity Control

A battery separator is a thin polymer film full of controlled pores, and it is made by extruding polyethylene or polypropylene with a pore-forming agent, stretching the film until the pores open, and washing the pore former out. The water that leaves carries the pore former. Wet processes use paraffin oil or decalin as the forming agent, and the washing step removes it from the film with a solvent or a hot wash. Dry processes use the same idea with different chemistry. The effluent is a polymer and solvent stream: oily, warm, and loaded with a fine polymer fraction, and the design that works recovers the solvent early and treats the rest as an emulsion-breaking problem rather than a biological one.

Where the Solvent Comes From

The stretching and extraction circuits produce water rich in the pore-forming agent. Paraffin oil and decalin are the usual choices, and the wash step is what puts them in the water.

Extrusion and casting water carries the polymer fines from the melt and the additive traces from the formulation. It is warm and it is oily.

Slitting and finishing water carries the fine film fraction, which is light and which floats.

Floor and equipment washing adds detergent and heat, and it arrives in slugs that set the peak. A related discussion worth reading here is instant noodle manufacturing wastewater treatment.

Solvent Recovery First

The pore-forming agent is recovered by skimming, centrifugation or distillation where the volume justifies it, and the recovered agent returns to the extrusion circuit. Every litre recovered is a litre not discharged.

settling tank detail

The economics decide it. Recovery pays where the line runs continuously; small lines treat, and they size for the wash load plus the extraction water rather than the average.

The recovery point is also where the plant sees the truth about its own variability, and operators who sample there know their real peaks.

Emulsion Breaking

The emulsified solvent and polymer fraction is broken with coagulation. A polyelectrolyte sweep at controlled pH collapses the emulsion, and dissolved-air flotation lifts the floc out.

process equipment overview

The floc is oily and it holds water, and the dewatering step is specified with that in mind rather than assumed. The same selection criteria reappear in Coagulant Baths, Powder Slurry and Zinc, which is worth opening alongside this one.

Where the colour or the solvent trace persists, an adsorption or oxidation step follows coagulation, and the design accounts for it from the start.

The clarified water is the plant's best candidate for reuse in the washing circuit, and the loop is easy to close because that duty accepts water of modest quality.

installed skid unit

The discharge, where it still exists, is the final polishing step: clarified and monitored, and its quality is a report card on the upstream recovery rather than a design target of its own.

What This Looks Like in Practice

We commissioned a 10 m³/day plant for this duty in Fuyang, Anhui back in 2022. Feed COD came in around 17,938 mg/L and left at 150 mg/L — 99.2% removal. The train was Fenton + UASB anaerobic + denitrification + contact oxidation + MBR.

Figures are site-measured values from commissioned plants, not modelled estimates.

Where the recovery target is high, a membrane step polishes the clarified water, and the concentrate returns to the coagulation circuit rather than becoming a new problem.

Operating Notes

Recover the pore former before you treat the water. Solvent that returns to the circuit is solvent you never have to account for.

Break the emulsion mechanically. Biology does not eat polymer, and oil that survives to the outfall is a consent question.

Watch the sludge. Oily floc dewaters worse than ordinary biological sludge, and it shows up on the filter cake first.

Integrated Treatment Strategies

The same selection criteria reappear in Wind Turbine Blade Manufacturing effluent, which is worth opening alongside this one. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Two decades in this industry teaches you that most treatment problems are procurement problems in disguise. Someone bought the cheapest skid, nobody checked the equalisation volume, and eighteen months on the plant cannot hold its consent limit. We build differently.

In-House Fabrication

Our Guangdong works produces everything from standard modular units to fully bespoke lines. Building in-house keeps cost, schedule and quality under our own control rather than a subcontractor's goodwill.

Experience Built the Hard Way

Since the early 2000s we have commissioned plants for food and beverage processors, chemical works, electroplaters, textile mills, mines and municipalities. The lessons that stick are scaling, fouling and sludge handling — those inform every design we issue.

Complete Units and Turnkey Plants

Whether you need a single package unit or a turnkey installation with civil works, we deliver the entire treatment scheme. Our engineering team covers process, mechanical, electrical and automation so one party owns the outcome.

Spare Parts and After-Sales Support

We carry membranes, pumps, blowers, diffusers and instruments for every system we supply. Remote support through the PLC is standard on most builds, and on-site service covers commissioning, training and urgent callouts.

Certification and Export Practice

CE marking is standard and we work to ISO 9001 procedures. Where a project calls for specific material grades, pressure vessel certification or ATEX-rated equipment, we build to that standard and ship the full documentation pack.

Frequently Asked Questions

What treatment capacity do you normally design for battery separator production?

Skid-mounted units cover roughly 30 to 624 m³/day depending on the duty, and parallel trains extend that further. We size against your actual peak hour flow rather than the daily average, because equalisation rarely absorbs the whole spike.

How long does a battery separator production system take to deliver?

Standard units ship in about 11 to 13 weeks. Custom trains with solvent recovery first included run longer — plan for 14 to 25 weeks once detailed engineering starts. Site installation and wet commissioning add another few weeks.

Can the plant be modified later if our production changes?

Yes, if you tell us about likely expansion up front. Leaving room in the civil works and oversizing the equalisation tank costs far less than retrofitting later. Battery Separator Production Wastewater Treatment rarely fails because of bad chemistry — it usually fails because nobody planned for the second production line.
