Antimony Smelting Wastewater Treatment: Arsenic, Antimony and Acidic Metallurgical Water
Antimony smelters process a concentrate that almost always travels with arsenic, and the water circuit reflects that pairing. Off-gas scrubbing dissolves sulfur dioxide and carries antimony and arsenic into solution as acidic metallurgical water. Dust and flue cleaning add particulate metals, and cooling and floor water round out the picture. This is not a large wastewater by industrial standards, but it is one of the more carefully treated ones, because arsenic in a discharge is a consent and liability matter of a different order. The methods are classical: neutralise, co-precipitate with iron, settle securely and lock the residue away.
The Water and Its Load
Scrubbing water from the roasting and smelting off-gas is the main stream. It arrives acidic from dissolved sulfur oxides and carries dissolved antimony and arsenic, with copper, lead and iron in smaller amounts.
Arsenic concentration tracks the concentrate. A high-arsenic feed makes a high-arsenic water, and the treatment design is set by the concentrate contract as much as by the environmental permit.
Dust-handling and baghouse wash waters carry the same metals as particulates rather than as solutes, which changes their treatment: they are settled first and dissolved later.

Neutralisation With Intent
Lime neutralisation is the backbone. Raising pH precipitates the metals as hydroxides and neutralises the acid in one step, and the reactions are well understood and cheap.
Antimony and arsenic, however, do not drop to consent levels on hydroxide precipitation alone. Arsenic in particular stays soluble as arsenate across a wide pH range, which is why iron enters the story.

Ferric iron co-precipitation is the standard answer. Adding ferric salts and precipitating iron hydroxide scavenges arsenate into the lattice, and the resulting sludge holds the arsenic in a form that leach tests accept. The dose of iron is decided by the arsenic load, not by the pH. Where several streams need joint treatment, Sugar Beet Processing effluent is the more detailed reference.
Sulfide Option
Where the antimony itself must be recovered rather than discarded, sulfide precipitation is used ahead of or instead of iron treatment. Antimony and arsenic form insoluble sulfides, and the precipitate carries recoverable metal values back to the furnace.
Sulfide dosing is controlled carefully, because excess sulfide in water is its own consent problem and its own odour problem. We have written about the downstream implications separately in Cassava and Tapioca Starch Processing effluent.
What Our Project Data Actually Shows
Across 42 commissioned plants where we hold complete COD records, influent COD ranged from 200 to 172,000 mg/L and treated effluent from 50 to 5,000 mg/L. Average removal across that set is 87.1% — not a marketing figure, but the measured mean.
That average is worth pausing on. It sits well below the 95%-plus numbers most suppliers quote, because the set includes genuinely difficult streams. On some electroplating and municipal duties the installed configuration only reaches about half the influent COD, and saying that up front is more use to you than a number the plant will never hold.
| Metric | Measured value |
|---|---|
| Plants with complete COD records | 42 |
| Influent COD range | 200 – 172,000 mg/L |
| Treated COD range | 50 – 5,000 mg/L |
| Average influent COD | 11,914 mg/L |
| Average treated COD | 264 mg/L |
| Average COD removal | 87.1% |
| Wastewater types covered | 30+ |
| Delivery period on record | 2021–2022 |

Plants run sulfide recovery on the strong stream and iron polishing on the combined flow, which keeps the reagent costs proportionate to the value recovered.
Sludge Is the Product
The treatment plant's real output is a metal-bearing sludge, and its long-term behaviour is the design question. Arsenic-bearing sludges are stabilised, tested for leaching and stored in secure, lined facilities.

Dewatering is straightforward mechanically. The care is in the classification and the documentation, which in this industry are as much a part of the plant as the tanks. The process logic sits close to what is described in Shrimp and Prawn Processing Wastewater Treatment system, particularly on the pretreatment side.
Water recovered from the sludge step returns to scrubbing, and that loop is what keeps the fresh water demand of the smelter modest.
Online arsenic monitoring is still not universal, so laboratories and sampling discipline carry the load. Sampling at the headworks tracks what the furnace is sending down, which is the variable that actually changes.

Flow balance matters. Scrubbing water is recirculated until salt-limited, and the purge rate is the dial that connects smelter operation to treatment plant load.
The plants that treat this water well are the ones that treat the concentrate selection as part of the water design. The two decisions are the same decision.
Integrated Treatment Strategies
We have written about the downstream implications separately in Extraction, Caffeine and Colour. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.
Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer
Two decades in this industry teaches you that most treatment problems are procurement problems in disguise. Someone bought the cheapest skid, nobody checked the equalisation volume, and eighteen months on the plant cannot hold its consent limit. We build differently.
In-House Fabrication
Our Guangdong works produces everything from standard modular units to fully bespoke lines. Building in-house keeps cost, schedule and quality under our own control rather than a subcontractor's goodwill.
Two Decades of Field Data
Food and beverage, chemicals, electroplating, textile dyeing, mining, municipal work — we have commissioned across all of them. The useful part is not the project count, it is having seen how plants fail in year seven and designing those failures out.
Complete System Responsibility
One supplier, one process guarantee. We take the plant from preliminary screening through to membrane separation, evaporation and brine management, with process, mechanical, electrical and controls engineering handled internally.
Spares, Service and Commissioning
Membranes, dosing pumps, diffusers, instrumentation and blowers are stocked for the systems we sell. Our control systems support remote diagnostics, and we can put an engineer on site for commissioning, training or an unplanned shutdown.
Documentation You Can Actually Audit
Each system ships with as-built drawings, material certificates, welding records and a functional specification. If a client's own consultant wants to review the process calculation basis, we hand it over rather than treating it as proprietary.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does it cost to run, per cubic metre?
Energy dominates, then chemicals, then sludge disposal. We give you a per-cubic-metre breakdown during proposal so you can compare it against your sewer charge — treating too aggressively is a common and expensive mistake.
Is antimony smelting treatment suitable for water reuse?
Usually yes, once the neutralisation with intent stage is stable. Reuse normally means adding membrane polishing to bring conductivity and COD down to your process water specification. We would need to see your reuse water limits to size it properly.
How long does a antimony smelting system take to deliver?
Standard units ship in about 10 to 13 weeks. Custom trains with neutralisation with intent included run longer — plan for 17 to 20 weeks once detailed engineering starts. Site installation and wet commissioning add another few weeks.
What happens if the incoming antimony smelting load exceeds the design figure?
Load swings are the most common reason plants underperform. We set the design envelope from your worst-case samples, not your average ones, and specify enough buffer in the biological stage to ride out shocks. If your process genuinely shifts up permanently, we can usually add capacity in stages.
Do you export and support overseas installations?
We have shipped to the USA, Canada, Indonesia, India, Russia, Vietnam and Nigeria among others. Documentation, crating and export paperwork are handled in-house, and we support commissioning either remotely or with engineers on site.
How do you handle sludge from this process?
Sludge handling is where most budgets quietly blow out. We size dewatering against realistic solids production, and we usually recommend a filter press for this duty. The disposal route — landfill, incineration, or a licensed contractor — should be confirmed before commissioning.
