Instant Tea Processing Wastewater Treatment: Extraction, Caffeine and Colour

Instant tea is made by extracting brewed tea, removing colour and caffeine and drying the solids. The extraction and the cleanup steps produce a dark, high-strength wastewater carrying soluble organics, tannins and caffeine. It is not a mild tea wash; it is a concentrated liquor that is strong, coloured and biologically resistant enough to need thought. Treat it as a strong, coloured, somewhat inhibitory organic stream, and recover or pre-treat before you ask biology to finish the job.

A Concentrated Liquor

The extraction step pulls the soluble solids out of the leaf, and the spent extract after the product is removed is the main waste. It carries the leftover organics, tannins and caffeine in a dark liquor.

Strength is high and colour is intense. The colour is plant polyphenols, the same family that makes olive mill water so stubborn, and they resist simple biodegradation.

Caffeine is the marker compound. It is soluble, persistent in biology and a discharge concern, so it is both a treatment target and a useful indicator of how much load remains.

Flow is steady during a production run but the liquor strength swings with the blend and the extraction conditions, so the plant sees real variation shift to shift.

The Colour and the Caffeine

Tannins and polyphenols give the water its colour and its biological resistance. They are the heart of the difficulty because they inhibit the bugs that try to eat the rest.

Caffeine is removed reasonably well by biological treatment once the bulk load is down, but at high concentration it is itself a mild inhibitor, so it behaves like a phenolic: pre-treat the hard fraction first.

For the fraction that stays coloured, adsorption or advanced oxidation is what finally knocks it down. Ozone works but costs reagent, so it belongs after you have removed as much load as possible upstream.

Do not expect a simple activated-sludge basin to cope with raw extract. Feed it the raw liquor and the culture stalls; pre-treat first and the same biology performs.

Extraction Recovery

Where volumes justify it, recovering caffeine or tea solids from the extract is the smarter move, turning a disposal cost into a product line, which is the pattern on the better-run plants.

Even without recovery, concentrating the spent extract before treatment shrinks the volume the biology has to handle and makes the strong stream easier to manage. Plants dealing with comparable loads face many of the same trade-offs covered in Uranium Mining and Milling effluent.

Removal Rates Across Our Installed Base

Across 42 commissioned plants where we hold complete COD records, influent COD ranged from 200 to 172,000 mg/L and treated effluent from 50 to 5,000 mg/L. Average removal across that set is 87.1% — not a marketing figure, but the measured mean.

That average is worth pausing on. It sits well below the 95%-plus numbers most suppliers quote, because the set includes genuinely difficult streams. On some electroplating and municipal duties the installed configuration only reaches about half the influent COD, and saying that up front is more use to you than a number the plant will never hold.

Blending the extract with the weaker wash water early evens out the load, but do not dilute so much that you create a large weak stream that still fails on colour.

process equipment overview

Keep the extract separate from the clean condensates. The condensates are the weak stream and are often reusable, which lowers the volume that has to be fully treated.

Anaerobic digestion handles the bulk biodegradable load and returns biogas, which offsets a real part of the energy use during a run. The coloured fraction has to be pre-treated or loaded lightly.

Aerobic polishing after anaerobic removes residual BOD and the nitrogen the leaf contributes. It is smaller than it would be without the anaerobic front end.

Where colour and caffeine discharge limits bite, a polishing adsorption or oxidation step after biology is the realistic answer rather than pushing the biology past its limit. If your site also runs this kind of duty, Iron Ore Beneficiation and Pellet Plant Wastewater Treatment covers the cost side of the decision in more depth.

Sludge is organic and dewaters moderately. Because it carries fine leaf solids, mechanical dewatering with conditioners is the usual route.

Operating Notes

Pre-treat the coloured, caffeinated fraction before biology. Every unit of inhibition removed upstream is stability bought for the reactor.

Recover or concentrate the spent extract where volumes justify it. The water problem shrinks when the product is taken out first.

Finally, keep condensates separate and reused where possible. The weak stream is often clean enough to wash with, which lowers the volume to treat. The process logic sits close to what is described in aircraft mro facility wastewater treatment, particularly on the pretreatment side.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Choosing a manufacturer here comes down to one question: who is still accountable once the commissioning team flies home. Our answer is that we build and programme our own equipment, then stand behind it for the life of the plant.

Own Factory, Real Capacity

Tanks, skids, control panels and membrane housings are built in our own Guangdong facility. Nothing critical is subcontracted, which is why we can commit to delivery dates and hold quality across a batch instead of hoping the shop floor gets it right.

Two Decades of Field Data

Food and beverage, chemicals, electroplating, textile dyeing, mining, municipal work — we have commissioned across all of them. The useful part is not the project count, it is having seen how plants fail in year seven and designing those failures out.

Complete System Responsibility

One supplier, one process guarantee. We take the plant from preliminary screening through to membrane separation, evaporation and brine management, with process, mechanical, electrical and controls engineering handled internally.

Spares, Service and Commissioning

Membranes, dosing pumps, diffusers, instrumentation and blowers are stocked for the systems we sell. Our control systems support remote diagnostics, and we can put an engineer on site for commissioning, training or an unplanned shutdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

What information do you need to quote?

Water analysis for your worst-case stream, peak and average flows, discharge limits, available footprint and utilities. If you do not have a full analysis yet, we can start from a partial one and flag the gaps.

Do you export and support overseas installations?

We have shipped to the USA, Canada, Indonesia, India, Russia, Vietnam and Nigeria among others. Documentation, crating and export paperwork are handled in-house, and we support commissioning either remotely or with engineers on site.

How much operator attention does the system need day to day?

Automatic control handles dosing, backwash and level control. Realistically your team spends time on chemical top-up, sample testing and sludge handling — maybe one to two hours per shift on instant tea processing duty, less if you opt for remote monitoring.
