Waste Oil Re-refining Plant Wastewater Treatment: Emulsions, Sulphide and Phenols

Re-refining used lubricating oil back to base oil produces a wastewater that is worse than the oil it came from. Used engine oil carries combustion acids, wear metals, degraded additives and soot, and every one of those concentrates in the aqueous phase during processing. Add acid sludge from the older sulphuric acid route and spent bleaching clay from the finishing step, and the plant has three separate waste problems of very different character.

The Emulsion Is Deliberately Stable

Used oil arrives as an emulsion stabilised by detergent and dispersant additives that were formulated precisely to keep contaminants suspended. Nothing about that emulsion wants to separate, and conventional gravity separation achieves very little.

Chemical splitting is required, usually acid or aluminium/ferric salt dosing combined with heat. Heat helps a great deal — heating to sixty or seventy degrees before dosing typically halves reagent demand.

The separated oil fraction is what the plant wants and is returned to the process. The aqueous phase carries the degraded additives, the soot and the dissolved metals, and that is the treatment problem.

Expect variable feed. Used oil composition depends entirely on collection sources, and a plant receiving a different supply mix will see its effluent chemistry shift without warning. A related discussion worth reading here is Urea Plant effluent.

Sulphide and Mercaptans

Sulphur from fuel dilution and additive breakdown appears as sulphide, mercaptans and thiosulphate. Concentrations are moderate but odour thresholds are extremely low, and odour is usually the complaint that arrives first.

Oxidation to thiosulphate or sulphate with peroxide or hypochlorite handles both odour and toxicity. Precipitation with iron salts removes sulphide as iron sulphide, producing a black sludge that is stable and reasonably easy to dewater.

Keep sulphide out of biological treatment. It is inhibitory at modest concentrations and will also generate hydrogen sulphide gas in any anoxic zone, which is a corrosion and safety issue as well as an odour one.

Vent treatment is worth specifying at the design stage. Every tank and sump on this duty is a potential odour source and addressing them individually later costs more than a collection system now.

Metals from Wear and Additives

Used engine oil carries lead, zinc, calcium, barium and copper from bearing wear and additive packages. In processing, these partition partly into the aqueous phase and partly into sludge.

Reference Data from Our Own Projects

For comparison, our 2021 project in Wenshui, Shanxi ran at 6 m³/day with influent COD near 172,000 mg/L and treated water around 5,000 mg/L. That is 97.1% removal in practice, not on paper. The train was hydrolysis acidification + DAF + oil separation + ultrafiltration.

Most precipitate as hydroxides or sulphides near neutral to alkaline pH. Zinc is amphoteric and redissolves above roughly pH eleven, so overdosing alkali on this duty is actively counterproductive in the same way it is on plating waste.

The resulting sludge is metal-bearing and usually classified as hazardous. Volume is manageable if metals are precipitated cleanly, and much larger if they are co-precipitated with oil and solids. The same selection criteria reappear in Chrome Chemical Wastewater Treatment system, which is worth opening alongside this one.

Segregate metal-rich streams where possible.Keeping them concentrated makes both recovery and disposal cheaper.

Acid Sludge and Spent Clay

Plants still using sulphuric acid treating generate acid sludge — a highly acidic, sulphonated, tarry material that is corrosive, odorous and difficult to handle. It is one of the more unpleasant industrial wastes and its disposal increasingly drives the choice of process route. Much of this mirrors the situation set out in activated carbon production wastewater.

Many plants have moved to vacuum distillation and hydrofinishing specifically to avoid acid sludge. Where the older route remains, neutralisation produces a large volume of sulphate-bearing waste that still carries the organic fraction.

Spent bleaching clay carries adsorbed oil and organic contaminants. It is a solid waste, it can self-heat through oxidation of the adsorbed oil, and it requires storage designed for that rather than ordinary covered storage.

Characterise both streams for disposal classification early. Neither is a routine item and both constrain what routes are available. Where several streams need joint treatment, natural graphite mining wastewater is the more detailed reference.

Where This Fits in the Wider Plant

For the reuse angle specifically, barite and barium salt wastewater goes further than we can here. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Two decades in this industry teaches you that most treatment problems are procurement problems in disguise. Someone bought the cheapest skid, nobody checked the equalisation volume, and eighteen months on the plant cannot hold its consent limit. We build differently.

In-House Fabrication

Our Guangdong works produces everything from standard modular units to fully bespoke lines. Building in-house keeps cost, schedule and quality under our own control rather than a subcontractor's goodwill.

Experience Built the Hard Way

Since the early 2000s we have commissioned plants for food and beverage processors, chemical works, electroplaters, textile mills, mines and municipalities. The lessons that stick are scaling, fouling and sludge handling — those inform every design we issue.

Certification and Export Practice

CE marking is standard and we work to ISO 9001 procedures. Where a project calls for specific material grades, pressure vessel certification or ATEX-rated equipment, we build to that standard and ship the full documentation pack.

Twenty-Plus Export Markets

We have shipped to the United States, Canada, Russia, Indonesia, India, Nigeria and Vietnam among others. Crating, export documentation and certificates are handled in-house, which keeps customs surprises to a minimum.

Complete System Responsibility

One supplier, one process guarantee. We take the plant from preliminary screening through to membrane separation, evaporation and brine management, with process, mechanical, electrical and controls engineering handled internally.

Spares, Service and Commissioning

Membranes, dosing pumps, diffusers, instrumentation and blowers are stocked for the systems we sell. Our control systems support remote diagnostics, and we can put an engineer on site for commissioning, training or an unplanned shutdown.

Documentation You Can Actually Audit

Each system ships with as-built drawings, material certificates, welding records and a functional specification. If a client's own consultant wants to review the process calculation basis, we hand it over rather than treating it as proprietary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you work with our existing equipment?

Often yes. We regularly integrate into existing civil structures where the concrete is sound, replacing internals and controls rather than starting over. We will tell you honestly when legacy kit is beyond economic repair.

How long does a waste oil rerefining system take to deliver?

Standard units ship in about 8 to 11 weeks. Custom trains with sulphide and mercaptans included run longer — plan for 16 to 21 weeks once detailed engineering starts. Site installation and wet commissioning add another few weeks.

Do you export and support overseas installations?

We have shipped to the USA, Canada, Indonesia, India, Russia, Vietnam and Nigeria among others. Documentation, crating and export paperwork are handled in-house, and we support commissioning either remotely or with engineers on site.
